Food, wine, ambiance and service were all top notch! Braised beef short ribs were amazing. Dave the bartender always has a friendly smile. Will be returning.
This was not our first visit to The Boarding House but our only disappointing one. The setting is beautiful, the food was delicious, our service disappointing. While our server was attentive and did not make any mistakes with our orders, she was boarderline rude and clearly did not want to be doing her job; it put a bit of damper on our dining experience. At this price point, the service should be great every time.
We made dinner reservations for a Monday night. We were disappointed to find out that the dining room is closed on Mondays... but they were willing to service the dinner menu in the bar area. We ended up just ordering off of the bar menu a couple appetizers and some drinks. The food was good but not the experience we were expecting....
When I walked into Boarding House,I was immediately taken with the cool decor in the bar.We had 7:30 reservations that we had made less than an hour before. They took up to 3rd floor and then up the stairs to a table for 2.Unfortunately,we could have been seated in main dining,so we were disappointed to be up in a drafty spot. Our waiter was not particularly welcoming either. We had 2 salads, wine and left.Wouldnt go back unless maybe just for wine downstairs under the chandelier.
I'd been looking forward to my reservation with the Boarding House based on its ambiance and location. However, I was exceedingly disappointed with the service for many reasons -
1. Our server was not at all familiar with the wine list, even the wine by the glass
2. Our appetizers were served 45 minutes after we ordered them due to an "issue in the kitchen". During that time, our server never asked if we'd like to order our entrees. After I suggested it, we ordered and then they were served to us while we were still eating our appetizers.
3. When we arrived to the upstairs dining area, the hostess was texting on her phone and didn't immediately look up to assist us.
I expected more from this restaurant, particularly given its esteemed leadership group and price point. I therefore do not plan to return.
Beautiful space, great service and the food is always great. Overall we highly recommend The Boarding House.
We were celebrating our daughter’s birthday. Despite the host being a little prickly about whether our round table request would be honored, (it was), one we were seated upstairs our server Patrick made it a perfect night from beginning to end. Flavors were unique, portions generous, vegetarian options plentiful, cocktails and wine pairings were the finishing touch.
Our dining experience was ok, food was good. Service was ok, not very attentive. Ordered white wine by the bottle which was not chilled. Real complaints are when we decided to stay for a drink after dinner downstairs at the bar. Again, ordered a bottle of white wine that needed to be chilled so they offered us a small poor of another while we waited. The bottle was corked and tasted like apple cider vinegar, no big deal, it happens. We let the bartender know just so that it wouldn't get served again, he was rude and told us we were wrong. We must have offended him because from then on he was rude the rest of the evening. Such a shame! Great place but now we understand why it was dead on a Friday night.
Taking a friend from out of town
Came with family . Have a rehearsal dinner planned in the future and wanted to taste some items on the menu. Had a excellent meal and fantastic service! Thanks !,
Great food and wine
It’s relatively quiet. All the service people are so friendly. Waiter had perfect timing. Always knew when to check on us. Everything we ate was delicious.
The space itself makes the Boarding House very special. It's very artistic and interesting with the layout and the design. Everything we ordered was fabulous, and our server was awesome. It's definitely expensive, but I think you are getting what you pay for.
Food was over-priced
Food was the best in Chicago! Server was great. The dining room space on the third floor is amazing. We will be back.
It was nice to be able to have a conversation with old friends without yelling and shouting. I expected service to be more prompt and warm. Staff aloof but not rude
What a great “experience” everything from the food and the ambience was just spot on. A must try
Patrick, our waiter created a customized wine flight to pair with our meal. Everything was delish, and he was fabulous! Will be returning soon. This was hands down one of the best overall dining experiences we’ve had in Chicago! Highly recommend!
The food was absolutely incredible. The service from the moment we arrived was horrendous. The host was cold and unwelcoming, then brought us upstairs to the balcony level and handed the menus and said “you are welcome” in a very rude way when no one even had a chance to thank him in the first place. The waiter was rude and laughed at us when we said we were not ready to order drinks yet. The waiter rarely checked in on us. The waiter also stacked the bill by adding 3 drinks to the bill that we did not order. We called him out on it and he apologized and said that we gave us the bill from a different table. A different table? It was the same exact list of items we ordered minus the stacked drinks and he made the excuse it was the bill for the wrong table?!? The food was incredible, but the owner should strongly consider making a staff change based on the food and experience being polar opposites. We do not plan to be back.
Beautiful restaurant with great ambiance. Our food was over cooked though, which was disappointing considering its reputation. Service was great!
Outstanding food, service and experience. I highly recommend.
Food was excellent. Wine recommendations even better.
Not as professional as it used to be - dining staff is pretty lax which was a surprising since its such a formal well put together ambiance. Food was average.
The experience at the Boarding House was fantastic. You start on the first floor where you can have a pre-dinner cocktail and perhaps some apps. Then, they take you to the third floor where the dining experience continues. Our server was not your average server, but a sommolier. He was incredibly knowledgeable about wine and took our taste buds on a delicious grape infused journey that is unforgettable. He introduced us to a wine I had never had before that was dynamite, and is now on my list of wines I will add into the rotation. Definitely a must try restaurant.
We celebrated our first anniversary at Boarding House; service was top-notch, food was amazing, and of course the company couldn’t be beat!
Wait staff was very polite and helpful! Food was delicious and the dining area is quite nice. We went earlier in the evening before it filled up and enjoyed having a large space to ourselves
Downstairs bar area is very loud- our group could barely talk over the noise. The upstairs dining area is much quieter and nicer for conversation. We had salads, entrees and desserts which were all delicious.
Went for early dinner before symphony. Great meal, excellent wine. I had the scallops and my wife had salmon. Sorbet and coffee, very nice.
Wonderful experience! Wonderful décor. Service is impeccable from arrival till we left.
We took my parents there for dinner and the food was absolutely delicious. The service was also great. We would recommend this place for special occasions or date night!
Awesome! Service was amazing, food delicious. Only thing I would change was the very LOUD woman next to us!
Outstanding service, friendly staff , incredible food
Wonderful experience in a beautiful space. The service is warm and welcoming!
It should have been specified that there would be a very limited valentines menu. It wasn’t stated anywhere
Incredible experience. Thoughtful and attentive staff. Very special night for Valentine’s Day.
Running late, called ahead and host told us not to worry, very much appreciated. Complimentary coat check was another plus. Food was excellent, the duck is to die for. Literally order the duck.
The food, service and atmosphere was great. We enjoyed the evening
The Boarding House is one of our "go to" restaurants in this dining mecca of Chicago. The menu is always incredibly creative, and our favorite waiter, Patrick, takes the experience level up another notch. He knows our likes and dislikes, once we select our food, per his suggestions, Patrick chooses the ideal wines to pair with our meal. He truly makes each and everyone of our visits to the Boarding House better each time. Knowledge, conversation, he has extraordinary qualities. We have so many choices on where to go in Chicago, we choose the Boarding House which has never let us down. Highly recommended.
Server was awesome, attentive and sociable. Happy hour was good too.
