The Blackbird Ratings and Reviews
Can't go wrong at the Blackbird. The chef know his craft - delicious and filling. Not an extensive menu, but more than one choice for me (and I'm not easy to please). Good wine list and attentive, but not annoying service. If you enjoy people watching while you eat, this restaurant is in a good location for watching the AVL scene as it happens. And to top it off, there's reasonably priced indoor parking below the Aloft hotel next door.
We were seated by a window at a small table. Large group was later seated next to us, less than 30 inches away at a high table. We had reservations, other folks were seated at 4 person tables, but we were left sandwiched between the window and the high bar type table. We left 20% tip, food and service was great, no attention paid to our environment. Problem was, we had cocktails, appetizer, and salads served when when the high table was seated. I would insist on a real table if we go back. The group was very not at all a problem, they were not loud or obnoxious in any way, it is simply a forced table placement to maximize profit, but don't do it when your restaurant is half empty.
The ambience was modern, unpretentious and calming. Service was personable and informative, and was acceptably prompt. I had the soup of the day, a tomato bisque that was fantastic, bursting with rich flavor and complemented beautifully by the house bread. The roasted beet salad was gorgeously presented; it was enjoyable, but could benefit from greater amounts of the additional flavors on the plate - namely the goat cheese, pecans and balsamic reduction - to prevent a few too many forkfuls of a one-note nature. I'm a vegetarian, and want to go back to try the corn pie and a couple of those famous desserts!
We dined with blackbird last night
Service was great and we were seated almost immediately of arriving there
Pieces of the evening were great
Coconut cake was great but the mashed potatoes needed a lot of seasoning
I️ partakes in the seven course meal and wasn’t impressed at all
Went here for a birthday dinner in a quick trip to Asheville. The food was really top notch (corn pie and heritage farm chicken), some unique and local ingredients and well plated. Service was rather poor that night, but I think it was our particular waiter having a bad night, so won't judge the restaurant or management on that. I would definitely recommend this place for a small group and people who might like a little more interesting food choices.
Amazing surprise! I was a little nervous about going here because it is rated #67 of restaurants in Asheville but still a 4 1/2 star. What a great choice! All three of us had different appetizers and entrees and they were all great! Do not hesitate to eat here! All of us would gladly go back.
We came back to Blackbird again this year after having an amazing dinner last year around the same time. I had bragged several times to the group we were meeting about how amazing it was.....and boy were we let down. My food was lukewarm at best, the mashed potatoes tasted as if they came from a box as well as being cold. My husband made the same comment about his potatoes. It was such a disappointment . Not sure what happened in the past year, or if it was just a fluke night but Blackbird went from being phenomenal to average at best.
For friends enjoying the wonderful dinner for my birthday. All of the food was amazing. Especially the seafood risotto the scallops the corn goat cheese pie was amazing. But, the coup de grace was definitely the desserts! We had both the peanut butter brownie caramel dessert which was fantastic As well as the some more pie. Excellent restaurant highly recommend it.
Food was fine, nothing special - but the service was awful. We ordered a cheese plate to start and no one explained to us what we were eating. We had to constantly flag down our waitress to order more wine and ask for more water. It was also incredibly noisy and crowded.
Overall, not a good experience and would not recommend.
Server was delightful. Presentation was beautiful. Entree and salad portions were small and not that unique or flavorful for a $32 entree. Restaurant was packed on a busy Saturday night. Very loud and tight walkways. We've heard coconut cake is amazing and it looked it. It's huge. But we decided to maybe come for desert when at least two people could share.
The restaurant offered reasonably tasty food, albeit at relatively high prices for relatively small portions... for instance, the $32 seafood risotto had 3 or 4 medium shrimp and 3 scallops - less than I would have expected. Similarly, the $32 tenderloin trio had an estimated 6 oz of tenderloin - again, less than I'd have expected.
The other side of the issue - the enormous piece of fabulous coconut cake filled up the empty spaces that would otherwise have necessitated a stop for a snack on the way home.
Although our food choices tasted good, there was very little of it and seemed to be overpriced. I don't plan to return until I have tried every other restaurant in Asheville. I would say if you are looking for a quiet, mature, low-key dining experience you may find The Blackbird perfect for you.
Overall, we enjoyed the Blackbird. The food was fine, as was the service and the knowledgeable wait staff. The problem however, was in the lack of general comfort. All the chairs are wooden, with totally FLAT seats and no padding. We were VERY uncomfortable after about 30 minutes. There is some padded bench seating around the back wall of the place however, and if you plan on staying an hour or two, find a seat there. It almost made us think that the owner would rather not have people staying on to enjoy coffee or a desert (which we didn't). This lack of comfort dropped our overall dining experience rating by one star.
I needed to make a reservation for a last-minute business meal. Many of the places I usually dine are closed on Mondays. I found The Blackbird on Open Table, and fortunately they had openings to seat six people. It was an important dinner I was hosting, so everything needed to be fantastic. We were not disappointed! The food was phenomenal, the atmosphere was great, and not too loud for us to be able to have conversation at the table. From cocktails, to appetizers, to dinner and dessert, everything was delicious!
