The Black Whale
Menu focuses on local fishermen’s catch of the day, old school seafood favorites and a sprinkling of modern seafood interpretations. Menu ranges from raw bar, to warm and cold lobster rolls, baked cod, bacon wrapped scallops, bouillabaisse and peppered 14oz rib eye.
Large bar and spectacular views of the artful New Bedford Fishing Fleet. Large covered outside deck overlooking the fishing boats and harbor. Centrally located beside the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Ferries. Large parking lot.
And, of course, the hospitality is second to none. Service is what built the business.
I have visited the Black Whale once before and came back with my partner and in-laws. Kristy (spelling) was our server and she was FANTASTIC. I have been in the service industry for 7 years and she was the best server I’ve ever had the pleasure of dining with. Our food was fresh, hot, and had really generous servings. We never had to ask for a thing! I will definitely be back!
I am very picky about my scallops. When I noticed them came straight from a local boat I gave them a shot. BEST GRILLED SCALLOPS HANDS DOWN. Perfect texture!!! Highly recommended the sweet potatoes as well as the tomato bisque soup when it’s on hand as well !
Great appetizers, entrees and drinks. Black Whale is highly recommended.
It was our first visit, but we'll return. The lobster and the scallops were perfectly fresh and perfectly prepared. My wife thought that she doesn't like sea scallops, but then she ate two of mine because they were so good! Of course they were fresh; we were looking out at the famous New Bedford fishing fleet!
The server (Erica) was smart, capable, and attentive :)
The bar looked excellent, so I'm looking forward to returning some day when I can enjoy that as well.
Freshness is especially critical with seafood, and that's what we got.
Love the black whale 😊
Food and service were excellent. We will definitely be back.
Friendly and casual atmosphere. Waitress and food were awesome. Fisherman Favorite Iced Tea was the best.
Server kind of gave up after we were served . We still left over 15% as we grew up in the service industry.Walking by several times no communication about how everything was. Never said Thank You, almost like server was offended by the 21% tip , not sure if your expected to leave more due to COVID but tip included we spent over $100
A favorite restaurant of ours especially for seafood. Great raw bar. Comfortable and seaside.
Absolutely beautiful evening and supper. Lisa is great; chefs also; fantastic management. Congratulations.
Great food and great service had a fun time would definitely return. The fish was very good.
Great lunch. Food was delicious.
We were a party of 4 adults and 1 child for lunch. Seated immediately and greeted by our friendly server Christy. Drinks and food were prepared and delivered quickly. We started with a Whaler platter consisting of the freshest mix of raw shellfish, shrimp cocktail and tuna poke. Yum! We followed up with lobster rolls that are the best anywhere. Throughout our entire visit Christy was awesome providing the right amount of attentive service, always with a smile. Can't wait to return.
We asked for a seat by the window, and our wish was granted. A beautiful sunny day and a very active waterfront. Lunch and a show, lol. Waitress attentive but not overbearing . Perfect amount of food cooked to perfection, unfortunately no room for my favorite peanut butter thing! Next time for sure. Never disappoints!
over all a very good experience. Our server was great/
Always a great dining experience. Can't wait for the deck to open!
2 of us were going to get fried scallops then we asked if we could do half fish and half scallops. She said yes. When we got the bill she charged us $36 each. The receipt said seafood platter which we didnt get. I think that was kind of pricey since we didn't get the platter.
Great service and the sushi was AMAZING. Oh and the drinks were delicious!!
I was surprised as to how busy it was. There were many tables of large parties & no social distancing. We ordered clam chowder which was room temperature so we sent it back. The waitress apologized and brought us a new one. It was the same temperature. We had 530p reservations and didn’t get our main meal til almost 730p. I have never had a bad experience there before this time.
Myself, my husband and two friends had a late lunch on Sunday. We thought the menu was very innovative and imaginative. Every one of our meals were greatly enjoyed, perfectly cooked and delivered timely. Our waitress was excellent and very attentive. All in all we decided this was our best dining experience here yet! And we’ve had many very good meals here before. We will definitely be returning soon!
Service was ok. Slow to get refills on drinks.
Food was very good.
Absolutely hate that right at 90 minutes was handed the bill and said had to go. Place was empty. WTF. Really hate our government!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Black Whale accommodated my family and I very well.
My wife and I have been going to this restaurant since the pandemic began. They installed an air purification system which makes us feel safe when we go out to dinner. We had dinner there last night and the food was outstanding. They were kind enough to split a salad and split a main course in the kitchen at no extra cost. Find a restaurant that’s willing to do that. We shared their sake marinated Seabass. One of the best pieces of fish I’ve had in a restaurant in a long time . I highly recommend this restaurant.
2 people from the group had the special: Seafood Lasagna. It was so overcooked that neither person finished their meal. 2 other people from the group enjoyed their meals (sushi and steak tips). We told the waitress about the Lasagna and she replied, "Oh"...that was all she said.
Started off with oysters, moved on to Portuguese stew, crab nachos (amazing, by the way). Sea bass and crime brûlée. Are you kidding? What a feast! The nachos should be a staple menu item. Chef, you did an amazing job all around. Thanks to all.
We just love the way The Black Whale has responded to Covid, we feel very safe there. We consistently get good service and delicious food.
Always love dining here. Food is always unique and delicious. Friendly service. Great location on the fishing pier.
Our visit was excellent as always. Very attentive staff. Friendly service and our food was excellent. We always enjoy our experiences at The Black Whale !
Fabulous meal from start to finish. Waitress was very attentive and friendly to deal with. Can’t wait to go back again.
Great menu, great food, great sous chef and bartenders with a fantastic waterfront view!
The food and service is was absolutely amazing! It was a perfect date night!
Service was excellent. Our server was very pleasant and evidently overheard my husband say it was my birthday and brought my desert with a candle and sang to me.. very lovely.
We were celebrating Valentines Day. Everything from oysters, bake stuffed lobsters and 2 desserts - peanut butter thing and apple crisp were delicious! We’ll be back!!
Was a great experience. The food was excellent and the service was top notch. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.
When we arrived they had no record of our opentable reservation. Showed them the confirmation on my phone but they seemed very put off and were a bit impolite -finally agreed to seat us. Very disorganized. The old guy at the door was downright rude.
It was our first time there but it won't be our last it was a wonderful experience.
Seriously one of the best in the area! Delicious food, fresh seafood and veggies and super friendly and attentive staff!!! Bathroom needs more attention; toilet paper rolls on the floor and broken lock and missing hook for a pocketbook. Overall great experience!!!
We try to dine at the Black Whale once a week , each time it’s even better , food and drinks are great but the hostess and waitresses make your visit even better, highly recommend this restaurant
Shhhh.... I love this restaurant! My husband and I just discovered it a few weeks ago and we have already been back! When you walk in the place smells amazing with the aroma a food. (yes, I'm a foodie)! We were able to sit at the bar (yahoo!!) and it was great! The staff was so friendly and attentive and the food was fantastic!! We ordered the boom boom shrimp and the peanut chicken skewers and the clam chowder! YUM! and we went last Saturday again..haha to get the boom boom shrimp again and the Cod dinner (my husband said soooo fresh) and I had chicken Caesar salad. Ordered an expresso martini.. probably best I ever had.... I can't say enough about the staff, the bartenders (Joe, Kelly and Maureen) Can't wait to go back and I really can't wait for summer! Save a seat for us at the bar. We will see you soon!
