Serving fresh, bold and innovative food that reflects the history of New Bedford and celebrates the New Bedford fishermen, their catch and their culture.

Our menu focuses on local fishermen’s catch of the day, old school seafood favorites and a sprinkling of modern seafood interpretations. Menu ranges from raw bar, to warm and cold lobster rolls, baked cod, bacon wrapped scallops, bouillabaisse and grilled NY Strip.

Large bar and spectacular views of the artful New Bedford Fishing Fleet. Large covered and heated deck overlooking the fishing boats and harbor. Centrally located beside the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Ferries. Large parking lot.

And, of course, the hospitality is second to none. Service is what built the business.

The Black Whale never fails to impress. The food was cooked perfectly and the service was outstanding. Highly recommend for a casual night out or for a special occasion.

Always absolutely AMAZING. Katrina was our server, she remembered us and even my name ! We came with my cousins, their first time and they loved it. We started with Oysters, 2 speciality sushi rolls. My husband and cousin had the lobster fettuccine, they loved it. My other cousin had the fisherman's platter, fit for a King & I had my favorite, the soy sake seared Chilean sea bass. Always consistently delicious. This is our go to restaurant. Always fantastic. See you soon!

The Black Whale should NOT BE MISSED if you're near New Bedford, MA.! There's something for everyone on the menu with some real stand-out dishes. The chefs are doing and excellent job cooking many kinds of dishes, and there's a stand-alone sushi team taking care of impeccable raw fish. Pro tip: be aware the bar area gets VERY LOUD and is filled with multiple TV screens. Don't skip dessert. If the Clams Casino are on the menu, get them! The servers/runners are slower than the kitchen, so don't let anyone take your silverware as you might be without for quite some time... If you can get a window seat, the harbor is gorgeous day and night!

Very disappointed in the fisherman’s platter. They served calamari instead of clams!! In addition portion was much smaller than the numerous times I have ordered in the past. Very light on scallops and shrimp and overloaded with French fries. We asked server about the lack of clams and was told it was due to time of year and that the clams would be frozen and not fry well. I just had a fisherman’s platter at fathoms a few weeks ago and the clams were excellent.
