   Disappointing visit for my husbands birthday lunch. Order tap water but was brought very expensive mineral water which we hadn't realised until it was opened! £5 we had not intended to spend . Veggie roast was ok but parts of it were very dry ( potatoes and yorkshire pudding especially), asked for veggie gravy and was told that there wasn't any? Staff nice enough but very young and inexperienced. Was not asked if I was a chestnut group member and therefore points not added to my account. Not what we were expecting from this group as previous experiences in other venues were better. We won't be visiting again.

   Food very good but our table was in the middle of the bar with people milling round throughout our meal, service not very good , for the price expected better.

   It is a nice establishment, but we were seated in a position which meant one of our party had to keep getting up for others to pass. Our starters were lovely, we all dad something different. But we didn't think our main course (we all had the beef roast) was of good quality, it wasn't very hot, the meat was very fatty, my husband had a large lump of fat 'hiding' under his slice of meat? It had the potential to be a good beef roast, but being almost cold and poor quality meat spoilt it. We didn't have desserts. A good point was that we didn't feel rushed so was able to sit and natter with friends we only get to see 1-2 times a year. We would return but maybe not on a Sunday and would ask to not be seated by the door in the walkthrough.

   My wife had ordered the lamb Rump which arrived sliced . When she attempted to cut the slices she found the knife would not cut through the meat as it was not cooked. By the time the replacement dish has arrived ,she had lost her appetite. Because of the problem with my wife's uncooked meat I was initially distracted from my meal. I had ordered the Roast Hake dish . So I did not immediately notice that It arrived without the braised baby gem warm salad or the Asparagus. When I raised this matter the waitress went off to check. When she returned (without the items) she said the chef had offered a free desert.

   Was a very pleasant meal, nice atmosphere, very helpful and friendly staff. We were celebrating my dads birthday. Only downside which wasn’t good was a dog in the restaurant. I am a dog lover but didnt realise it was dog friendly, my dad is allergic to dogs which wasn’t good. However, due to the special occasion we tried to make the most of it and enjoy. Dog aside we had a wonderful meal in a lovely place.

    Came upon this pub by chance and were lucky to get a booking via OpenTable. We were not disappointed- lovely setting in Long Melford delicious food and very good service. Loved the fact that dogs were allowed into the restaurant- would highly recommend.
