Another ambient, delicious date at the Black Derby. Next time, I’ll have to try the Arctic Char!
Little restaurant in a quiet neighborhood. it's frequented by locals and the menu is great, old fashioned was delicious as were the appetizers.
We had a reservation and our table was ready on time. All the food from our appetizers, entrees and dessert was excellent. There were 8 in our party of everyone enjoyed it! Would absolutely come back if in the area again.
Had a great experience.
This is a very easy place to settle into after a long or frenetic day. Food is very, very good; staff is attentive and low key. If you want to hear your table mates, go on the early side -- it was a speak easy in a basement in the 1920s.... low ceilings and get noisy.
The place is small but everything was perfect!! They had a pre fix menu because it was Valentines day but every course was excellent!
Delicious but overpriced
very poor service. came here for a Sunday brunch . the person who seated us gave us attitude.
the waitress did not show up for nearly 20 mins to take our order and only came because we called her while she was at the table nearby.
food was good and tasty. service was unacceptable
DELICIOUSLY DELICIOUS. Brunch - Chicken & Waffles and Corned Beef Hash Croque Madame. 2 thumbs up for 2 awesome dishes.
Great brunch place for friends or family. Wonderful service and the food was amazing. Also, a super cute place in general!
I love The Black Derby and have dined there on multiple occasions. The food is delicious, the drinks are excellent, the ambiance is fantastic, the service is always attentive, and the music is soft enough to have a normal conversation over dinner (which is rare downtown). My favorite dishes include the burrata and the tuna appetizers, the chicken and the steak frites for the mains, and I LOVE the chocolate bread pudding dessert. Great place to take anyone - dates, parents, business associates, friends...this restaurant is always top notch.
This is a lovely, intimate restaurant with a room in the back for groups. I will definitely return.
Excellent food, service, and ambiance .
Would definitely recommend
I have been coming here for years. The menu had changed and not in a good way. :(
After this last time when I sent back my food back (I rarely do that) the server just kept insisting I was wrong about the what I have eaten there in the past and what I usually order.
Sorry - I don’t think I will be back again. I ended up ordering the chicken after returning the lamb (chicken was the safest option). My friends burger was good .. it was just the service and my meal that was a bit disappointing. I was not done with the appetizer and she insisted on taking it away .. I was a bit in comfortable ... when a customer it still eating it’s not polite to insist on the next course.
Perfect place to gather with friends on a snowy winter night. Very easy to get to by way of multiple subway lines. Friendly, knowledgeable bartender serving cocktails and wine while we waited for all our friends to arrive. Dinner menu had something for everyone from vegan to meat lover. No rush to turn over the table. All on a beautiful West Village street.
Love this place, never disappoints
What a charming little gem! Lovely atmosphere, excellent service and delicious cocktails and food without any pretense. Really enjoyed our meal and then they put a candle on the dessert plate because we mentioned it was a birthday dinner. It's a small gesture but goes far. Portions were quite large -- we probably could have shared two entrees between three -- but we ate it all anyway. I would definitely go back.
Amazing! Super experience. Dinner was great. The special was lovely, a fantastic surf and turf. The service AND the other guests were a blast. Everything was truly special. The servers in particular are a delight. Well done!
LOVED this place. Literally the best pasta I ever ate. Great great great food ! Super cute and quaint
Wonderful experience for New Year’s Eve!
It was a great dinner for NYE. The staff were cheerful, the patrons were all very happy. The food was delicious. My kids wolfed down the steak frites in under 30minutes. We stuffed ourselves to the gills, ending with dessert. One member of my party said if the world ended tonight, they would die fat and happy
Lively crowd, cool “underground” feeling inside.
Nice cocktails!
Service was amazing. Loved our server.
Always a great time! Cozy and special place that has wonderful food and drinks.
Food was amazing, service was exceptional, and overall a great dinner. We will definitely be going back!
We had an amazing meal. This place is a bit small, but it makes up for it is service and quality of food. My husband had the steak. I had the tuna tartare and another appetizer. It was memorable.
I come here frequently when I am in town. None of us were drinking this evening and were drinking seltzer water from the bar. No bottle - just the gun behind the bar. We got charged every single time for a refill. Seems like a really crappy thing to do. We have over $20 in water charges.
Everything we ordered for food was delicious (we only had a variety of starters and sides but judging on that, really good). Drinks were decent if a bit sweet and light in the booze - I had the Paloma Mami and Spicy Margarita and they tasted ok. At busiest times of dinner service the drink orders were slow but overall highly recommend.
A great find in the Village and a very popular restaurant as well.
the only problem with this experience was that it is a very small dining room and there was a very loud, very drunk man that was disruptive to our dinner. that's not the restaurant's fault, just something to be aware of should you dine in the dining room and not at the bar.
My second time in black derby luckily we got the winter new menu.
from the wine list to the alcachofa to the black
Bull everything was amazing plus outstanding service from our waiter thank you and i will definitely be back.
A very lovely place, as in very small, but overall it was great to visit.
The staff was very friendly, specially our waitress.
My first time here, but not my last. Cosy, friendly, noisy, very good food. Ordered escargot appetizer & a lobster & shrimp main dish, both very tasty.
Lovely staff, my food was very good, my girlfriends was overall good, but the texture of the gnocchi was a bit soft, potentially sprightly overcooked, my steak was cooked to perfection and my calamari was delicious!
Great little neighborhood gem! We’ll be back.
The pomme frittes and roasted garlic soul was amazing. Salmon was well cooked and very good, the sauce was a bit too creamy for my taste. The burata appetizer was very good, as well as the lamb sliders. Would recommend it. Staff was accommodating and helpful. Nice romantic atmosphere, although you are very close to other patrons.
Slowest server ever
Really enjoyed dining here. Had been wanting to come for a while - I live in the west village and walk by often. The owner came over and introduced himself and couldn’t be nicer. Whole staff was great. Food was great. Vibe was great - very “cozy NYC winter spot”
Normally we love the Black Derby, we felt like they had an off night. My steak was chewy, the salmon was well prepared but the accompaniments were bland. We will be back but hope it returns to previous levels!
Came here to celebrate a promotion with a friend. we were recommended the lamb sliders and tuna tostada and they were both excellent. For our second course we shared the roasted chicken and the fresh parpadelle. Both were amazing! Definitely a gem in the neighborhood. Didn’t do dessert this time but plan on trying the server recommended sticky toffee next time.
