The Black Derby
French and American Bistro Fare with Classic Cocktails and an Elegant Wine List
Very good service. Sauces on all of the entrees were really great! We ordered the chicken, the steak frites and the salmon. All delicious!
Crowd was noisy but having a good time. I had the calamari appetizer, lamb, and toffee cake. All pretty good. Service was good too. It is a small village restaurant but what was expected.
The Black Derby is consistently wonderful!
WAY too expensive for a basic brunch. Website menu did not match the menu at the table
Perfect for a date night. Cozy and welcoming. Can't wait to go back!
The Black Derby may be losing its touch. Have been here a bunch of times when in town from San Francisco. This time the served was on the cold-side. Service was concentrated on a larger party at the table next to us, while we (and another couple) were left feeling a little neglected. Unfortunately not the experience it used to be.
Each plate brought flavor and happiness to our palettes.
This place just never disappoints. I’m a regular.
We were in awe of this place the first time we walked by. We actually had reservations set for another place, but last minute changed to here. We could not have been more happy with our choice to do so. It fit the vibe we were going for and my husband and I both really enjoyed our meals. They ran out of the calamari right before our order - but we were okay with that - gives us a reason to come back!
I love the warm atmosphere of this restaurant. It’s in the cutest area . The food is great. It’s my go to place.
I loved this restaurant. The food was delicious and the atmosphere is really nice. I am already booked to go again!!! The lamb sliders were delicious and the watermelon salad was presented beautifully and also delicious.
Excellent brunch place recommended to us by a local New Yorker. We ordered bottomless mimosas and enjoyed the brunch specials. We loved the “open air” layout and the staff was super friendly and attentive. Great for romantic day dates, family meals and friendly get-togethers!
They cater to a young, casual, loud crowd and cannot provide separate checks.
I went to the Black Derby with my friends and we decided to have only starters to share - which means that we had almost all of them. They were absolutely delicious, every single one of them. The wine list was amazing as well, we went with a Super Tuscan that was new on the menu - super! The service at the Black Derby is always great, friendly staff that take good care of you. Great atmosphere that fits the Village. I highly recommend.
We loved the Black Derby! The food was absolutely incredible and the atmosphere was beyond cozy. Thank you for a great experience!
Great food. Space is tight but good for intimate dinner. Service was great as well.
Stumbled upon the place and had a great experience!
Nice & quiet. Great service!
I had dinner there last night. When I arrived I asked the Bartender if I could sit at the Bar first and have a cocktail and she was most accommodating and said my table was ready when I was. Thank you, Jovanna! After my cocktail I was shown to my table by my server, Jessyca. I asked her for recommendations. She suggested a watermelon and feta cheese salad so I ordered that and the Chou Fleur which is roasted cauliflower with a white bean humus and a salsa verde. All I can say is WOW!!!! Everything was delicious and the service was excellent. The only thing I regret is that I was too full to try one of their delectable sounding desserts! I highly recommend an evening spent at the Black Derby!
The service was quick, friendly and attentive and the food was delicious! We went for a late dinner and the restaurant was busy so I recommend making a reservation. Highly recommended for a date night!
Air conditioning very weak
Amazing brunch spot, great food, excellent service, and a beautiful little space!
Perfect brunch spot with friends!
we had a date dinner in the derby everything was fabulous from the soup special to the monkfish to the burnt cream our waiter was very professional yet friendly guided us thru this amazing night , highly recommended and definitely I'll be back.
The food was so good and they had a decent wine and cocktail selection.
The Black Derby is a charming small West Village restaurant that serves high quality food.
Everything that I've ordered has always been delicious. Service is a not always consistent, but pleasant. My only issue is at times the noise level becomes so loud, that it's almost impossible to have a normal conversation. Not sure if there is anything that can be done to help lessen the noise. I will continue to eat there, and hope that the groups of loud customers (usually at the same table) are not there when I am. Don't let that stop you, as the food is very good.
Food was tasty. Good menu with great starters and sides. But waiter checked in a few times at first then was MIA for 20 minutes at a time. Sat for almost 30 minutes waiting for the check.
Five of us arrived in time for the prix fixe, but since we don’t all eat dessert everyone ordered a la carte...our server Rebecca was very kind and patient,
The food was delicious and everything cooked according to our requests. The prix fixe was originally a bargain, but now it makes more sense to just order what you want.
Greenwich village ambiance is terrific. It was a birthday and they put a. And le in the key lime pie which was appreciated by all....thank you.
The servers were friendly, although it took awhile to get our food after we ordered. The atmosphere was casual and not too noisy. The food tasted great, but I had the breakfast burger which was difficult to eat because the bun basically disintegrated.
Delicious meal - server was terrific. Overall experience was great
Not too crowed which normally is a kiss of death. Turned out to be lovely and great food.
What a delicious brunch!!!! Everything was outstanding! Can’t wait to go back for dinner.
Visited The Black Derby during a weekend trip to NYC to celebrate my daughters' 21st and 18th birthdays. We loved the bistro atmosphere, the brownstone setting, food, service, etc, etc. It had a really cool, hidden gem, neighborhood feel.
We really enjoyed our appetizers and main dishes. Our only regret is that since we were rushing to catch a show at the Village Vanguard, we didn't have time for dessert!
Pretty good food overall but a little slow on service. A little limited in the view
Great dinner. Cute restaurant with really good food.
All was wonderful. I was with a friend out to dinner for the first time. We ordered 4 appetizers. The one thing I asked the waitress was to not bring them quickly. Unfortunately, that’s what she did. That was my only negative about the entire evening.
I ordered decaf coffee and it wasn’t. I did not sleep all night...
Rebecca provides awesome service. The special was fantastic and the meatballs (a recurring favorite) did not disappoint.
