Open since July 4th, 2002, Black Cat Bistro is known for serving Innovative Farm Fresh Fare. The dining rooms are decorated in soothing colors and fabrics. Down pillowed benches frame the edges of two of the three rooms. Candle light adorns the tables covered with white linen. Food is served on white china and wine in crystal Riedel stemware.
The Black Cat is our go to restaurant in Cambria. We keep giving other local restaurants a try and are some how disappointed. At the black Cat...we always have great food and service for a reasonable charge. The lamb rack and duck breast are our favorites!
We stayed in San Simeon and this was the best restaurant we could find. Very pleased!
The food was delicious and the service was great. They only serve wine and beer and limited beer selection. Other than that, highly recommend.
My husband and I had great dinners. He had the rack of lamb and I had the Quail. Both were delish! The sauces were on each were outstanding! However, I tasted the lamb and sauce and liked it a bit better. The portions were just the right size. We split the Caesar salad, which was also very good, but would have been too much for one person. The ambiance was delightful and social distanced tables was perfect!!
Loved the place and will definitely go back again with out of town guests!!
Very pleasant dining experience. Crispy brussels sprouts salad was delicious, as was the duck main course.
The food at this restaurant is amazing. We started with a caesar salad.
My wife had the polenta with eggplant - just plain amazing.
I had the ribeye steak - cooked perfectly and served just right with mashed potatoes and mushrooms. We also enjoyed a very lovely bottle of pinot - Adelaida Pinot Paso Robles 2018. Light, balanced and well structured.
Not sure if the restaurant was short staffed the night we dined but there was an inordinate amount of time between seating, ordering and service. We didn't mind that much as we were just enjoying the evening at whatever pace it came. If you have somewhere to be though, my suggestion would be to let the server know in the hopes that the pace might be a bit quicker.
This is a lovely place with a super pleasant staff.
I highly recommend it just on the food and preparation.
You won't be disappointed.
While the menu is a little dated, the food was solid and well executed.
Great place. Unique upscale flavors, cozy ambiance.
Great food.. however the porch we sat needed some maintenance
Amazing food and service that never disappoints. Quaint and romantic ambiance
When you visit Cambria the Black Cat should be on your list for dinner. Old home charm, good service, wait staff professional, and the food & preparation outstanding. I had the scallops. Prepared seared on both sides, cooked perfectly. My spouse had the special, salmon with honey glaze.
A MUST VISIT!
Terrific restaurant. Creative dishes well executed
We had mahi mahi dinner special. The fish didn’t taste fresh, “fishy”. Poor presentation and flavor, white fish, white rice and cauliflower.
Waiter reduced cost and gave us dessert.
Except for a short wait at the beginning of our meal we had great service and outstanding food. Our eggplant appetizer was fabulous and most unusual. The main courses of chicken piccata and steak were exceptional and we finished with a dessert that was interesting and delicious. From start to finish one of the best meals we've had in a long time.
Black Cat is Fabulous! The place is super cute and the food is delicious. We were able to sit inside during this visit and our server was wonderful. It's a Cambria Gem. You should go!
This was a great place to have a nice quiet dinner awesome food awesome service I give it a 10
A lovely place to celebrate my husband's birthday -- good, interesting food (the pot de creme was amazing), reasonably priced wine list, quiet enough for conversation.
We sat on the lovely heated patio. Service was excellent. The wine list had lots of good choices as well. The food was super tasty. It wasn't cheap -- but it was well worth it. Super happy we went to celebrate our anniversary.
A bit rundown, mediocre, but decent service.
Great Food...BEST clam chowder ever!!! First time there and would definitely go back.
We had a great dinner! We sat at the corner outside the patio, had a nice server who catered to our request to have a light dinner. Service was prompt and delicious.
Amazing food, excellent service. Very quaint place with amazing quality.
We were in Cambria for our anniversary. Found the Black Cat on Trip Advisor, which rated it # 2 for fine dining. We made the reservation on Open Table, which was a good thing because there were only 6 tables available due to Covid. The service was wonderful and speedy. The food came out so quickly we barely had time to sip our drinks. My husband ate the Scallops, 4 very large tender ones, on creamed corn pudding with tomatillo sauce. YUMMY. I had the Crab Cakes topped with Shrimp appetizer and the plate of roasted Brussel Sprouts with roasted pecans and blue cheese. These two appetizer dishes were enough food to fill me up. We did order a basket of bread and butter. We were too full to order dessert, but the desserts I saw at other tables looked amazing.
We heard great things about the Black Cat, and didn’t seem to share that type of experience. Ingredients were fresh, yet execution lacked. For example, food was plated before protein was finished cooking. I could tell because the side dishes were served cold. Since we were seated amongst regular guests, we just chalked it up to an off night. My advice: if you have only one server scheduled, schedule a food runner for support.
We booked this based on yelp reviews and were a little nervous as we arrived about 15 minutes before they opened and it looked completely closed. We had started looking for another place and a car pulled up about 5 minutes before 5 and they were back in business. We were a bit skeptical on how it was going to be, but it was terrific! I had the arugala salad, the chicken piccata and the salted caramel pot de creme for dessert. All were excellent. My husband decided to have several of the appetizers for his dinner: fried green olives, gnocchi and the Paso Robles pork belly. He loved them all and was stuffed. The service was on point and friendly. We ate on the porch that is open at the top of the wall, but was as close to eating indoors as we've gotten since Covid-19. They have a heater to keep the temperature comfortable with a coat on. I preferred it before all of the tables filled up, but I prefer to be a bit more cautious than some. This was our favorite meal while in Cambria for three nights.
The food was excellent! We ate dinner there and the outdoor patio seating was cozy and warm. I had the scallops and they were buttery and flavorful as was the corn pudding. My friend had the ribeye and it was very juicy and cooked just right. The location is unpresumptuous and the table linen make it feel more like a cafe but the food was more fine dining which were thrilled about. The apple pie and toffee pudding (more like a muffin) with spiced pecans & whipped cream was not too sweet and delicious. We definitely recommend this place.
Really great food and service. Their outdoor dining is on their patio. Almost felt like indoor
We enjoyed the food and wine, Mara, the server was attentive, detail oriented, and pleasant. The restaurant was slow: Tuesday in early Feb., the town was very quiet.
We were pleased with the overall menu and availability of V/GF options.
We had reservations. When we arrived the place was empty. I know with covid things are different, but the candles on the table weren't lit, the lights that were strung around the outside patio where we were to dine, weren't on and when we entered the girl that greeted us seemed annoyed we were there. I told her we had reservations and she said sit where ever you want. We sat down and she brought us water and menus without saying anything. When she walked away, I told my husband let’s go somewhere where they will be happy we came, so we did. We had fond memories of past dinners at The Black Cat from previous trips.
We’ve been wanting to try the place for a few years but it never worked out on our trips up. It did not disappoint!!! Everything was delicious and our service was excellent! We can’t wait to make this a regular spot on Cambria trips!
Absolutely love this place, the one in paso is great too
Great meals & service
We received incredible service. The waiter was very attentive to our needs and made our anniversary special.
Hidden Gem in Cambria. Sea Chest closed so went here for anniversary. Charming old historical house. Service and food excellent under these difficult conditions. Had rib eye and scallops. Will be going back!
Wonderful Anniversary dinner in Cambria. They were very safe and mindful of pandemic. Socially distanced tables. Heat lamps. Loved the crab cakes.
We were very grateful that The Black Cat was serving on Christmas Day. Others were too as there was a steady stream of customers lined up to get their take-out. We had the Brussels sprouts and crab cake appetizers, both were delicious. By the time we ordered they were already sold out of one of the two vegetarian entrees. We had the strozzapreti pasta (the other vegetarian entree) and the chipotle shrimp linguini. They were both well prepared although the chipotle shrimp linguini had a bit too much cream and could have used a bit more heat. Our meal came with bread and something that was butter-like but not actually butter. The staff were very accommodating but stretched with all the customers.
Food was delicious! Maurizio and Sarah so friendly.
Thank you to The Black Cat - Cambria for accommodating my husband and I on Wednesday, 23 December 2020. It was my husband's birthday, and they went above and beyond to make it a very special evening and celebration for us. The food was fantastic, the service was excellent, and the ambience was perfect. Special thanks and compliments to our wonderful server and chef that evening! We hope to come back soon to enjoy another meal with you soon!
We were only going to be 2 & at the last minute went to 4 plus a puppy. We were catching up with long time friends & had a 3 hour dinner. The service was great & patience with us. Great patio dining!! It was a wonderful evening with great food and wine.
