   We went for the Sunday roast and it's among the best I've ever had in a pub — the venison was particularly superb, and the starters and sides really artful and inspired. The sharing tarte tatin for dessert is a must. Lovely service too — attentive and friendly but not at all overbearing — and a beautiful, sophisticated dining space.

   We thoroughly enjoyed our amazing starters ( sashimi for me - awesome and wood pigeon- sumptuous for Stu. The star of an already glittering show was the shared plaice, with garlic prawns, seasonal greens and pearl barley mushroom risotto. Wow!’ And the phenomenal tarte tatin was the perfect ending to a perfect meal.

   We stayed for 3 nights and ate in the restaurant each night. The first night 'Tuesday Curry Night' started off a little chaotic, but service improve thereafter. The food was very good, I had the 'Kerelan Cod, Trout & Prawn Curry' which was lovely and the sorbet for desert was perfect. The 'Taster Night' menu had unusual elements to it, but that is why we wanted to eat there, to be challenged, as well as to enjoy the food and it was an amazing experience, service this night was very good. On the third and last night 'The A La Carte' menu, both food and service was a delight. I would always recommend force rhubarb for desert on any menu in Cumbria, but especially here, really lovely. Also on the wine menu this night we had a lovely chianti and for treat we ordered a glass of two types of infused sake's they were serving that evening which were very refreshing.

   Food and wine choices were excellent. Lovely service and pleasant staff. Would recommend.

   Our overall experience was mixed it started really well a good waitress excellent wine. Our choice of nibbles and the 2 starters we had were amazing well presented and imaginative tastes that went together perfectly. Unfortunately our choice of main course a sharing rack of Vension at £70 was extremely disappointing the sliced meat was very rare with blood running over the presentation board, of course Vension is served rare, we have had it numerous times but this was very rare, the actual cutlets on the bone were presentation only, no edible meat on them.

   Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience. We both chose a Sunday type roast of local lamb which lacked taste, was difficult to cut and quite chewy. The vegetables were undercooked and, sadly, cold. The saving grace was the gravy which was very tasty. Compared to similar meals eaten elsewhere, it was very expensive.
