Excellent lamb Sunday roast but very disappointing for vegetarians, 2 cubes of roasted celeriac as the replacement.

One of our many visits to the Bull but this time we took friends who enjoy good food and they were very impressed. Everything we ate was gorgeous including my Crispy Korean Beef starter and amazing fillet of beef. The 2 waitresses were very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. The dining room itself is stunning. Our 2 friends from Kendal can’t wait to return both for meals and an overnight stay left in the year.

Being awarded for best Sunday Roast. I expected quality rather than quantity, didnt live up to expectations. I had the Herdwick lamb which was reconstructed best bits of the lamb shoulder. Stringy lamb and quite tasteless Other members of my party had the white beef which was tasty if lacking in quantity. One carrot and one leaf of green, two roast potatoes and a yorkshire pudding. Not worth the near £22 plus 13.5% service charge. Wont be returning

During a short break at the Black Bull we had two very good evening meals there. On our first night it was Curry Night - top notch food, fresh, tasty - my lamb rogan josh & my wife's Keralan fish curry both excellent (as was the onion bhaji, nothing like ones you get from a supermarket!). On our last night it was the a la carte menu, and that was a special meal - high quality, excellent presentation, really enjoyable. The starters & dessert were very good, my wife's monkfish and my venison both superb. The Black Bull definitely deserves its reputation for excellent food.

We went for the Sunday roast and it's among the best I've ever had in a pub — the venison was particularly superb, and the starters and sides really artful and inspired. The sharing tarte tatin for dessert is a must. Lovely service too — attentive and friendly but not at all overbearing — and a beautiful, sophisticated dining space.

We thoroughly enjoyed our amazing starters ( sashimi for me - awesome and wood pigeon- sumptuous for Stu. The star of an already glittering show was the shared plaice, with garlic prawns, seasonal greens and pearl barley mushroom risotto. Wow!’ And the phenomenal tarte tatin was the perfect ending to a perfect meal.

We stayed for 3 nights and ate in the restaurant each night. The first night 'Tuesday Curry Night' started off a little chaotic, but service improve thereafter. The food was very good, I had the 'Kerelan Cod, Trout & Prawn Curry' which was lovely and the sorbet for desert was perfect. The 'Taster Night' menu had unusual elements to it, but that is why we wanted to eat there, to be challenged, as well as to enjoy the food and it was an amazing experience, service this night was very good. On the third and last night 'The A La Carte' menu, both food and service was a delight. I would always recommend force rhubarb for desert on any menu in Cumbria, but especially here, really lovely. Also on the wine menu this night we had a lovely chianti and for treat we ordered a glass of two types of infused sake's they were serving that evening which were very refreshing.
