The food was excellent overall. The chef’s tasting menu was very impressive. Overall a good dinning experience but the dinning area was a bit underwhelming. Cobwebs in the corner where we sat and dust on the window sills. For the price I would expect a bit better attention to thing like that.
From the moment we came in, everyone was very nice and helpful. The food was plated perfectly and everything was delicious. The plates in the tasting menu were spaced far enough apart so we didn't feel rushed. The area in the conservatory was clean and bright and very comfortable and welcoming. We will be coming back and can't wait.
This is a hard place to get to, tight twisting roads, not for the faint of heart.
The staff is professional but not friendly whatsoever. They do not bother to ask about allergies. They somewhat rush you and when you ask questions, the answers are short and not that helpful. They were not at all personable.
The food is good, but to be honest, you can get food just as good for a lot cheaper elsewhere. I would not rank it near the top of a list of nice restaurants I have been to. I was really looking forward to the Shenandoah lamb and the two pieces were small. The shoulder was ok, the belly piece was tiny but very good. Tbh though, my wife makes lamb as good as this. They used alot, almost excessive, rich sauces and garnishes which at the end of the night had my stomach is a bit of a churn from all the rich stuff. Again, they seemed to rely on this rather than the taste of the center of that course of the meal.
I ordered the wine pairing with my 6 course chef's tasting meal but the wine stopped after 4 courses, not sure why... again, the staff just not bothering to ask if things were ok or if we wanted anything. They brought us in, fed us and ushered us out. I just did not find the place that warm and friendly. To be perfectly honest, it was not worth the money and I would not recommend a friend go there to eat. There are so many better choices in the Washington area that do a much better job.
The dress code is ambiguous. There were blue jeans and casual shoes without socks in evidence although it does say smart casual.
Overall, I would say this restaurant is past its prime, living on reputation.
Good food and good service. However, should let diners know ahead of time about peculiarities of service (i.e. generally all diners at the table must choose tasting menu and same number of courses from selected tasting menu).
Beautiful atmosphere and service was excellent although there was only one server the night we were resort guests - for the entire restaurant. A testament to Stuart’s professionalism that we never felt lacking for attention despite him having to wait on 4 tables, Bartend, and make the coffee upstairs.
The food however was mediocre, particularly when compared to other fine dining we have had NY, Philly, and LA. When considering the cost of the meal I’d have hoped for more. Fish was over cooked. Food was presented beautifully but from a taste standpoint was not exciting. Tasting menu wasn’t available the night we dined, perhaps this would be better.
Great time at Goodstone ! What a lovely property and restaurant; like stepping into a dream. The staff was very warm and welcoming which really helped us celebrate a birthday and catch up. The food quality and presentation were wonderful. Cheers to a lovely evening at Goodstone. We will be back soon!
I came here for a special food event. While I know they had a special chef that night, but the food was cold for most of our courses and the service was really bad. We watched servers give details about each course to other tables and our waiter did not, which was very unfortunate. This was my first visit and I will probably never visit again.
Nice surroundings and pleasant service. Food offerings could be more refined for the prices but could do in a pinch for the area. The scenery probably pops more in winter with some snow on the grounds and in the trees.
Truly a gem in the rolling hills of Middleburg. Goodstone has been on our list for a while, and I'm glad we finally locked in a reservation. We did the 6-course tasting menu with some cocktails. Everything was perfect. I typically don't eat meat, but I made an exception for this menu and -wow- well worth that decision (they do also offer a vegetarian tasting menu). Service was wonderful. Food was spectacular. The mixologist was happy to accommodate cocktail requests based on preferences. We will be back.
The Conservatory is a beautiful place for a romantic dinner in the woods. Decor is modern, light, and very comfortable. Food was awesome. I has the foie gras was melt in your mouth lovely and the Dover Sole was prepared in a unique way that was quite unexpected but tasted great. And the dark chocolate dome was a dessert to die for. The staff worked as a team through out the quite busy night to ensure we were always attended to and Christina was wonderful. Definitely a place we will visit again.
Birthday celebration fantastic!
The place is beautiful. The staff is gracious and professional. There were just a few things we didn't love. This was our anniversary, an important one. Due to a wedding rehearsal at the restaurant, and next day wedding, the only reservation available was at 5:15. We informed that it was our wedding anniversary when making the reservation.
When we were lead to our table, there was an incredible amount of loud chat and pot banging in the kitchen. We were the first table seated and expected the din to settle down, but no. Three more tables were sat and if anything, the kitchen sound increased. All of us were glancing back to see what was up. We finally asked if they could take it down a notch and they thankfully did. It was weird though and made for an unsettling cocktail before dinner. By the way, the cocktails were very good and the wine list is extensive.
The menu. We passed on the chef's tasting menu, neither of us enjoy raw scallop crudo, fois gras, raw eggs or goat cheese That left a very limited menu.
We both started with a salad of lettuce, corn and green beans.
I ordered the veal, very tender, nicely prepared, plated with a tomato based sauce, a vegetable roulade and several ttiny gnocchi. The best I can say is that it was well prepared. Exciting? Delicious? No.
My husband ordered the Dover Sole, wrapped around a broccoli filling and plated in a cream sauce. Also, just okay. We wondered why we were eating fish with a chopped broccoli in an upscale restaurant. It was something my British mother in law might have made in the 70's.
Peach tart for dessert was also, just okay.
It was a disappointing evening of food. Our expectations were high, but the experience lacked on so many levels.
Our anniversary wasn't mentioned. Fortunately, the company at our table was outstanding!
Great birthday celebration dinner.
We celebrated a friend's birthday and words can't express how well we were taken care of.....from the outstanding service and savory food. We also had the wine pairing and I can tell you that is was well worth it. The sommelier did a amazing job pairing the wine to the incredibly beautiful and delicious meal. The entire staff was wonderful and attentive...with a pleasant sense of humor. Thank you so much for a memorable evening.
Super location deep in Virginia hunt country. It is a bit out of the way though, so we were glad to be going there for lunch on a pleasant summer afternoon rather than dinner on a winter's evening.
The restaurant setting is very nice and airy, the few customers there on tables spaced out in a socially distanced manner. This restaurant is, however, very expensive, and I didn't feel that we got good value on both service and food.
There was only one server who was also acting as the host. He had a cold and brusque manner, did not introduce himself nor give any information concerning the dishes on offer (especially not mentioning the "catch of the day" that was posted on the menu). I will though give him credit for the pacing of the food service.
The food was attractively plated though my appetizer and entree came up short. For my taste, the seared fois gras was undercooked and the dover sole was over sauced.
Beautiful does not accurately capture the setting. It’s tucked away and makes you feel as though you’ve stepped into a different world. We were warmly greeted and immediately escorted to our table. We were celebrating my daughter’s birthday and the menu was tailored with a “ Happy Birthday” message. Music was softly playing in the background. The food and service was outstanding!
Great food and service. Loved the tasting menu with the wine pairing.
Disappointing experience. Went with a friend for a birthday celebration and we chose the chef's menu. The room was beautiful, but there were dead flies on the window panes where we were sitting, lack of attention to detail. We were not asked about allergies or dislikes, as I have been every where else over the years that I have ordered the chefs' menus. Waiter, Stewart, did not asked if we wanted drinks, sommelier came to table and was very standoffish and a little creepy. The first appetizer arrived and before we barely started it, the next appetizer arrived. Scallops were room temperature and smelled very fishy. They had a huge piece of cilantro on the top and I despise cilantro. Had we been asked if we had any dislikes, I would have pointed that out. My guest's appetizer was removed from the table before she finished it. Half-way through the white asparagus we still had no bread on the table and had to ask Christina to bring it to us because Stewart NEVER came to check on each of the dishes after they were delivered, he also never refilled our water. We were not asked if we wanted coffee/after dinner drink. We both felt very rushed through our meal. The food was very good, but for the money spent the service from Stewart was poor. Christina was wonderful. She refilled our water a few times after we pointed out that it had been empty for while. She spent a lot of time answering our questions and was quite knowledgeable. The grounds were beautiful.
Everything was great. The food and service were both exceptional. We always enjoy our experience here!
Wonderful atmosphere and service!
We love Goodstone but this time they were off their game. Possibly short staffed due to Covid. We did the vegetarian tasting menu. One of us has a severe seafood allergy. One course was brought with a lobster bernaise . They quickly removed them all and brought two back for the vegetarians with the lobster bernaise again! This was after about 20 minutes. We also did the wine pairing which was great. However between two courses we waited a long tim for thé next wine with nothing to drink. We have dined here quite a bit over the years and usually have a top notch experience. However this is the second time we have been served a sauce with fish or seafood in it. Disappointing particularly for what you pay.
Very good food, friendly staff, beautiful grounds.
Amazing food, some of the dishes were lukewarm though which kept the rating from being 5s across the board.
Great service -- and very beautiful setting. From beginning to end the service team is gracious and friendly. We enjoyed our meal there.
We went for 2 birthdays between 4 friends. It is a really lovely property with some excellent dishes.
Thankfully, our friend was very alert and he spotted that we had ordered a premium Sancerre and the waiter brought us a bottle of Sancerre they use as house wine . Very different price points.
This upset him and brought the experience down since he thought this was on purpose.
I wish our waiter had not been as busy as he clearly was. I did not believe it was on purpose.
A long overdue vacation.
Wonderful location paired with outstanding food and service. What else is there to say?
This was our first time at Goodstone and it did not disappoint! We went for lunch. We loved everything and can’t wait to go back. The food and service was exceptional. The property is stunning. We are going to book a stay at the Inn. Highly recommend!
Wonderful lunch at the Bistro. Beautiful setting, attentive service, and the grounds of the Inn are stunning. A lovely day trip from DC!
Great service, Food was good.
Definitely take the early seating it’s quieter and you can see the grounds better and take your time eating. Food was great. Had the beet salad with goat cheese and the short rib.
Food was delicious and flavors were excellent
Beautiful setting and refreshing mix of jazz/American songbook standards create lovely ambiance. The dining room is a charming atrium looking out on the woods and beyond. Fresh baked bread and butter were delicious. We started by sharing the fois gras which was incredible! My husband’s martini was perfect. The menu was varied and enticing. I had the Dover sole and husband had the short ribs. Both were sooo good. The portion of sole was generous but I wish there had been more vegetables, especially at that price. There was a good selection of wines by the glass. We shared the chocolate mousse for dessert and it was good but not remarkable. A memorable dinner that was rather extravagant. Prices are high. A special occasion dinner.
Fantastic experience, the food was amazing
Great selection of fine dining choices. Beautiful building and grounds. Staff exceeded expectations.
A few work colleagues enjoying time away and this was such a perfect meal. The beautiful location, ambiance, food, drinks, and service were impeccable.
Much of the recorded music is truly dreadful !! 😱 Jazz and other discordant noise.
My second visit. Service rather brusque. First visit much better.
my partner does not eat pork for religious reasons. We specifically indicated that to the waiter. After several bites of his entree he discovered a piece of bacon. No apologies. No comps. No nothing. Really expected more. Dishes were under seasoned. I’ve been to some of the best Michelin
restaurants and this place has no reason to be this rude or stuffy. Highly overrated in my opinion
