The Bird & The Bread Ratings and Reviews
Served was pleasant once one arrived at our table took way too long to get our drinks no bartender
Seemed like we were ignored and that there was no organization
We ordered the cheese- board which indicated it was market price, worst cheese- plate ever served on a plate for $25! ; there was 3 of us so 4 tiny slices of a baguette was not going to work ; took at least 20 minutes to get more.
The place has some ambiance but we will not be back
We went to the Bird and the Bread because my cousin was in town from IN, and I wanted to eat on the porch in the breeze. We had a great time, and it was the perfect place for our event. I had half the bird, which was very tasty. The bird was a tiny bit dry, but that could happen at any time. The juice they pour at the end, the crispy potatoes, and the green bean casserole were all delicious. I would have it again. The bread with cheese we had as a starter was heavenly, and I liked my wine. My mom had a delicious bloody mary, and everyone liked their salads and small plates. The only awkward thing is when you arrive, and no one is there yet, they still look around for a table, like where can they possibly squeeze you in? I would also be uncomfortable eating an entire meal at the couches on the porch, which is where they originally wanted to seat us. That might be fun with a young group, but not with my 79 year old mom and aunt. You will also have to leave throughout the meal to put quarters in the meter, because the dumb city of Birmingham is too fancy (greedy?) to allow you to pay for more than an hour at a time. This causes people who are sitting on the porch to sort of scale the bushes, and try and jump to the sidewalk to get to their cars quickly. It only takes an extra second or two to walk through the restaurant and out the front door like a civilized person. Also, people in Birmingham bring their kids to every restaurant, so you have to just chill out and not worry if kids and babies are loud.
I've never been impressed with their entrees. I had the rabbit pasta and it was barely warm, had a ton of meat and the corn and cilantro in it just didn't make sense. The drinks are good though, as were the soft pretzels. Go for apps and drinks--skip dinner.
We have been to the Bird and the Bread a few times for both brunch and dinner. The restaurant really never disappoints on quality of service and food. Servers always have great recommendations and we've never left here unhappy. It is an open space and quite loud so not the best for a cozy/quiet date (if that is what you are looking for).
I read that the service here can be less than great. Well, this was our first time here, and the service was wonderful! The server was friendly and attentive and just charming, the manager stopped by, and everything was lovely. Oh, and the food was great. The portions are huge. The alcohol offerings are many and varied. I am sorry I did not save room for dessert, so will need to go back soon. A wonderful Friday night meal!
Group was seated at a table too small to accommodate us. Food was average but over priced. One of our party found a hair in his drink. Drink was replaced but we were still charged for the drink. Waitress was good when present but for most of the dinner was absent.
This is probably the last time I will dine at this restaurant. I've come here several times before and always tend to leave disappointed.
The food and drinks were fantastic. The bartender was awesome, very informative and friendly. However, once we were sat at our table our waitress proceeded to ignore us most of the night. She forgot to bring our 2nd drinks until the meal was over and we had to flag her down just to get her to our table several times. She then charged us for the drinks we never received and was very rude. I'm not a sensitive snowflake, I just want my drinks with my food. She would've realized we never got our drinks if she ever came back to our table.
I don't want to diminish a place based on one terrible employee so I'd highly recommend this place for great food and drinks but stick to the bar.
Service was ok...however, when we were brought the bill while still eating our meal (and the restaurant was not terribly busy) we were put off by this improper gesture. Our waitperson had not bothered to ask how our meals were let alone if we would like an after dinner drink or to look at the dessert menu. It was odd to say the least. We found it rude.
We went here with a party of 6 for Fathers Day brunch. The food wasn't bad for a few of us, things were lacking more than others taste wise... the problem was that we waited 20+ minutes to be greeted by our waitress and then an additional 10+ minutes to get our drink order to us. The waitress was not friendly, she never introduced herself, when she got to our table she simply only said "What do you want to drink?". She never apologized for the wait, she never told us the specials, she was lacking serious knowledge of the menu; when the food came out she never came back once to check to see how everything was/if we needed anything; She never cleared our plates at the end of our meal and we waited another 20-30 minutes after completing our meal to even cash out.... I could sadly keep going. She basically was non-existent and we felt scammed having to even leave her a tip. The manager did manage to come check on us at the end of our meal and we told her of the situation. She was apologetic and brought my Dad a $25 off coupon for his next visit but I unfortunately do not think any of us will be returning and we feel as if a comp on part or even all of our brunch would have been appreciated and was slightly expected more than the received coupon he got to attempt an assured return.
Moving to Detroit. Was apt hunting staying close to the restaurant so went to dinner here. Decently late reservation at 8:30 p.m.
Was very busy even that late. Almost too loud.
Server was overwhelmed & very distracted. Both our table & next table was horribly late on service from asking for drinks to getting requests for starters and then disappearing act to ask for supper. We had to call him and rushed all our orders in since we were afraid if we just ordered drinks he will be again gone for an hr before we get supper orders in.
Server doesn't even know what Tequila was used for house margarita and disappeared for 10 minutes!
Wanted to take all the orders in same time. We said we wanted two tacos and then he went away placing the order. Did not come back till way later when we were all done eating.
Menu seemed promising but horrible execution.
Also, not a $30 as Open Table said. My supper large dish was red snapper and was $36. Smallish size fish, dry and chewy. Definitely did not seem fresh. Tasted more frozen, inferior quality and tiny for $36!
Side dish was a mashed potato deep fried. Looked Yummy on plate BUT that huge of a tater ball the inside temperature was all wrong. It was cold mashed potato inside!
My partner's seafood dish was boring too. Nothing stood out. Even Red Lobster & Olive Garden has better food than this!
As a foodie, definitely checking this as a NOT GO BACK EVER restaurant once we move to Detroit!
Maybe it was a concept by some good chef who is no longer there and the folks executing his vision is absolutely missing their mark. I hope Detroit food scene is way better than this!
Good food at a good price and portion size. The daily specials are creative and delicious. Make sure they get your order right if you're ordering cheese on your scrambled eggs, because there's no point in adding cheese later and not having it melted on there before.
Had a reservation at 7:30 was initially seated way in the back of the restaurant next to a party of 20+ people
Way too noisy we asked to sit up front and had to wait because a graduation party was going on. Also a wedding party was coming in later!
Would have been nice to know of all these parties would have made a reservation elsewhere! The food was good but our order wasn't correct
We won't be hurrying back
Went with a girlfriend on Saturday night to celebrate our birthdays and catch up. Impeccable, friendly service. Great recommendations. We ordered several small plates to split, and the pacing of the food delivery was well-thought out to give us time to nibble, chat, and get ready for the next dish. All in all, a really wonderful night.
This was our first visit and we were very disappointed. We attended the Mother's Day Buffet, and our service was awful. We sat for over 10 minutes before our server came to our table and she seemed very disinterested. My husband had to get up 3 times to find her to get clean plates, ketchup, salt & pepper, and beverage refills. We are a very low maintenance family, but it was tough just having basic needs taken care of. Because it was a special holiday meal; gratuity was included and we felt robbed of $25 because her service was so poor.
Our meal was decent, but nothing special. The buffet attendants were texting while at the protein carving station and not very attentive. One employee told my husband that most had been there since 2:00 am (we had a 5:00pm reservation) and he apologized for the service (and we hadn't even complained). I think he knew how bad it was. We will try it again on a normal day and are hoping its better.
Booked this restaurant for Mother's Day. Had no idea we'd be seated in a banquet room in the back of the restaurant. So needless to say the ambience was lacking and there was no real dining experience as it was a buffet. The food was better than average but the service was typical of a big event that is too big for the staff.
