WELCOME TO THE BEAR AT CARRIAGES.

We are 100% independent, 100% family run gastropub based in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

Our food centres round a roaring solid fuel fire pit, housed in our spectacular beer garden. Tuesday - Sunday we serve the very best local produce with a difference.

Our dog friendly bar area serves an enviable selection of draught craft beer, small batch spirits and cocktails. As if this wasn't enough, we have over 35 wines by the glass, so you can really choose the best wine to suit the occasion, or the food.

Great service from the moment we arrived. Very friendly atmosphere, dog friendly and great food. We were celebrating our birthdays and decided to have three courses, masala fish and fireplace prawns to start, flat iron steak and blackened salmon for main and tropical meringue plus a sticky toffee Swiss roll for dessert. All cooked to perfection (especially the salmon). Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely return.

Open Table booking not recognised. Didn't have a reservation despite reminders to me from OT. Thankfully it was quiet and our party of 6 could be accommodated. Items from menu and wine list not available ie burger!, specials, slaw!, etc

My partner and I had a lovely evening at The Bear on Thursday. The food was very good, if not just a tad overpriced. I had Masala fish, which came with Bombay potatoes and raita and it was very tasty. Then the pork, which was lovely, but we over ordered on the extras. Tartiflette plus chips plus greens was too much, even between two of us. My dessert was fancy. A chocolate thing with a solid chocolate top, melted when the salted caramel sauce was poured on. It was funky but far too sweet for me. Nothing wrong with it, if you have a sweet tooth. They have a good selection of wines, many by the glass, which is great. They offer a handful of cocktails, but will happily mix up something else, providing they have the ingredients. However the Martini was watered down by it having been shaken, not stirred. I will definitely go again. This time it was paid for with vouchers, but next time, when it's out of my own pocket, I'll keep an eye on how much I'm spending.

Imaginative, excellent quality food. Choose from small or large plates. Busy, buzzing atmosphere with lovely staff. Good value for money. Even managed to park outside on a very wet night. What's not to like?
