The Bathwick Boatman

Modern European
The Bathwick Boatman is a tranquil slice of gastronomic heaven, located just 10 minutes stroll from Bath's city centre on the picture-perfect banks of the River Avon. Run by husband and wife restaurateur team Ben and Rosy Hall, the restaurant is set in an old rowing club with beautiful river views and a cosy, rustic ambience. After training in Italy and Spain, Ben worked in Miami before returning home to Britain, and his simple, seasonal menu is full of robust flavours and represents good old-fashioned value for money. The Bathwick Boatman has a divine summer terrace, and is perched just above Bath's historic boating station, where you can hire a punt or a rowing boat for a post-meal paddle.

The food was excellent, you could tell right away that the ingredients were fresh and freshly prepared. There was a strong classical Italian influence to the cooking which keeps the dishes simple and lets the food be the star. Ben and Rosy the owners were extremly friendly and very attentive. The ambience was also very easy on the eye and we could see the tiver from our table. Well worth the 10 min walk from the centre of Bath

It was a hot (1st Oct - 28C!) Saturday lunchtime and it was deserted, apart from two other couples on the nice terrace overlooking a quiet tree lined part of the Avon. So atmosphere - nil! The menu was rather limited - chicken, steak or plaice (but not today, sorry) were all that was on offer as significant mains. The cockles were adequate. Tomato soup - good; bread and butter pudding rather too sweet, but nice enough. A larger crowd might energise the place a bit, but disappointing.

Lovely setting, especially on the terrace on a sunny day. Attentive & friendly service. Shame some of the tapas were tinned but on the whole a good mean and we would go back.

I was entertaining my Canadian friends during a brief stay in Bath, for whom the rowing theme was very appropriate. The atmosphere is of a typical boathouse and in the most beautiful setting on the riverside. I can imagine this is a perfect venue to eat lunch al fresco. The food was delicious with all the staff were very keen to ensure our experience was enjoyable. I will definitely make the effort to go there on my next visit to Bath. Highly recommended.

The Bathwick Boatman in Bath was a great night out. The menu was limited but all options were interesting and veggies were well catered for.The food was very tasty and extremely good value at about £6 for starters and £12 for mains. Wines were also reasonably priced. Staff were efficient and solictious, and the location is lovely whether you're inside or out on the terrace overlooking the river. A great choice.

The Bathwick Boatman is nicely located next to the River Avon with lush-ish green surroudings. The building appears to be a converted boathouse and works rather well as a restaurant. The onion basola was unusual but tasty, and the roast beef and lamb were delicious with great accompaniments. Service can be better organised but overall a good experience.

We went to the Bathwick Boatman on a Saturday adn it was practically empty, so v quiet - though we didn't mind. Service excellent; friendly and efficient. Food tasty though a touch underseasoned for my liking, and apart from a couple of dishes pretty run of the mill - not v unusual. Ox cheek and steak's peppercorn sauce v good (though steak more cooked than asked for); bread and butter pudding also delicious. Wines reasonably priced.

Delicious lunch and was very pleasant being separated from the crowds, set up right next to the river while eating.

An excellent evening. The food was lovely and the waiter was very friendly and clearly knew about the food. Although the restaurant was reasonably quiet, there was still a pleasant atmosphere.
