The Basin Ratings and Reviews
Good food but service was a bit mediocre. The New York steak was incredible!! I expect the server to pour your wine once it’s uncorked but ours had a different agenda, we were on our own. Our server made sure he took care of his friends next to us but neglected to make sure we were ok with everything . Bit of a disappointment although the food was good.
This is our third visit and the food was outstanding...oysters,steak,scallops,chicken..all were first class preparations and fresh. The sauces are first rate and leave your taste buds exploding. Get appetizers as the food takes time to prepare...but is absolutely worth waiting for. Don't forget to try the dessert cocktails!
It was an 'ok' experience. Value was not consistent for all dishes: while my daughter's duck entrée was the most meat we'd ever seen in any duck entrée, my small 'bowl of soul' we thought was pricy at $36. My husband would have liked his Argentine steak to have come with grilled vegies instead of fries which he thought was too casual for the venue.
It was a pleasure to dine on a satisfying herb roasted chicken (new the the menu) served on a bed of tasty garlic mashed potato accompanied by sautéed spinach. The food was hearty and the chicken well cooked and nicely seasoned. The Pellegrini Chardonnay paired well. The Basin is a local gem and is consistent, but a little predictable. I picture the chef in the back dying to try something with a little more wow. Try this place, you won't be disapointed. Recommended!
Great selection of interesting of dishes with a Spanish twist. Cocktails were inventive. Unusual to see liver and onions on a nice dinner menu—maybe you won’t like that but I did. Great apps and choices for mains from fresh fish, veggies, meats etc. friendly staff, excellent service. I’d go back
I was really surprised by the poor service. We waited more than 25 minutes to order drinks and a lot longer to be able to order the meal. We had to ask for bread, though other tables got their's. Also, the outdoor heaters go on either full blast or not at all. The food was very good, but there are a lot of other restaurants that have just as good food with better service. This was a special occasion and the restaurant did not live up to the occasion.
Our entire experience at the Basin was spot on. From our initial greeting, to the great craft cocktails and friendly bar service (Sara) to our delicious dinner served by Sara #2, and the special dairy free dessert prepared just for me.
The Basin has been a go to spot of ours for years and will continue to be.
Sadly, The Basin fell short of expectations. Indifferent service from the get go. Had to ask for water (10 minute wait for that), had to ask for drink menu, etc. Food was fine, albeit uninspired and nothing I couldn’t make at home. I suppose it is an okay option if you live close and know the staff but I won’t be back.
Hands down one of the best restaurants in the South Bay. I'm officially addicted to the exotic mushroom dish; anyone going there must order that. I promise you will not regret! Everything we have tried over the last five years has been great. Steak, liver and onions, cheese plates, tuna appetizer ( with arugula and pistachios). The special cocktails are great as well. We go to the Basin if we just want a reliable, wonderful meal, for special occasions, it's that type of place.
We had a party of 8. Six ordered the trout. Two ordered the Bowl of Soul. The food was good. However, the trout came with cooked Kale that covered half of the plate. Too much ! We all commented on it. It would have been better to have a smaller portion of Kale, or another vegetable, and either small red roasted potatoes or wild rice on the plate as well. We had 5:00pm reservations and got out of there around 6:45pm.
My friend recommended this restaurant so we were excited to try it. Unfortunately, after the person who would be our server failed to hold the door open for us (we were following him in), our experience deteriorated. On a very dead Monday night, it took 20 minutes to get drinks. From there, I had to request the "specials" some of which were omitted because, well, he just "didn't" mention them. The food was below average. Wilted lettuce accessorized with impressive brown spots and way too much dressing joined the overcooked fries and croquetas to make this the worst meal I've had in over a decade.
Ever since their chef Steven Vu left, the same Basin items that used to be outstanding are now less so. It's not that they are badly cooked -- they're just subtly not as good. The McFarland Trout, for example, used to be very flavorful and have an excellent aftertaste. (Note I've been ordering that trout for more than five years!) Last night's was properly cooked, but did not have that same flavor and aftertaste. It was bland. If last night's trout had been the first time I had eaten it, I wouldn't have returned to the Basin. The trout's just not special any more 8-(.
We have always liked The Basin but lately the food has not been that good. We are also very tired of the same menu that rarely changes. I had the arrabiata pasta which was mushy and had no spice. My family had the steak which is a favorite. They enjoyed it but thought the sauce was too sweet. Hopefully they will make some changes as this has always been one of our favorite restaurants.
Have been disappointed with my last two visits to The Basin. This time even though the restaurant was less than half full, it took over an hour to get our food! We were starving and had chosen The Basin over another restaurant because we were hungry and wanted to get as early a reservation as possible. The waiter gave us no explanations or apologies for the delays or even an idea when we would get our food. I'll think twice before going back. :(
My wife and I had occasion to drive down from the north to attend the Steve Winwood concert at Mountain Winery. We found The Basin restaurant was recommended by others on Open Table. So we decided to have a leisurely meal before the concert. The food was excellent and served very timely; I had the steak special of the day and my wife had the hand cut pork chop-amazing!
Let us not forget our server - Sara - an absolute sweetheart! Friendly, knowledgeable and even showed us thew other salons in the restaurant for parties, special occasions-we'll so be back!
