The Barrel Room - San Francisco
Every 4 months all of our menus change, showcasing a new region.
Our 50+ wines by the glass are carefully selected from small producers to reflect the current region. We maintain a bottle list of over 1,500 labels, from vintage Champagnes to aged Bordeaux to lesser-known wines from more obscure wine regions such as Bosnia and Georgia.
Come experience a totally different type of dining... we invite you to travel the culinary world with us!
Had a group of 8 for dinner. Great overall experience, but confusing when time for the check. Being a group in town for a conference, we all have to adhere to certain guidelines in regards to being reimbursed and it would have been a plus to have someone ask about the check either up front or prior to bringing it out.
The private cellar dining room is outstanding, and the service was top notch. Especially enjoyed the unique Portuguese menu and wine pairings.
Food was pretty good. Wine was excellent. Ambiance was quiet and comfortzble.
This restaurant went directly to my favorites list. Outstanding wine selection. The menu cycles from one country/cuisine to another through the year so check the website. On this night it was Portuguese. The food was excellent. The service was truly 5 Star. The waiter was always around but not intrusive. It was the best location that I have eaten in recently to have a low background noise discussion. If you like great wines and like to experiment with cuisine, this is a winner.
Good place for drinks and appetizers. The wine selection is extensive and the staff are very knowledgeable. Not worth staying for dinner. The halibut was over cooked and my rice was under cooked.
The team was completely satisfied with dinner. Adding The Barrel Room to our preferred restaurant list.
Cool place, recommend the Clear Creek Brandy Cocktails. Current menu is Themed on Portugal and everything we had was amazing. My partner has food allergies and the wait staff/chef had no problem steering us away from certain items and serving sauce on the side to avoid any potential issues. We look forward to coming back soon and will keep eyes out for the next menu offering.
The Barrel Room concept of matching the wines of a region to the food of a region is an excellent one. Not only do you get to sample some great wines you'd likely never otherwise try, the food is extremely good. Cool speakeasy downstairs, too, and an awesome wine store. I recommend without reservation -- although you should definitely make a reservation (or sit at the bar)
Outstanding. Especially the service
Our first night visiting from New York, and we had a really wonderful experience! Great food, great wine, great service!
Great place for biz lunch and I saw a nice private room I will definitely use for a dinner
Server was amazing and kind. Our cocktails were late so had glasses of champagne comped!
Food and ambiance were great.
Great food and accommodating service!
Went for a co-workers bday lunch. Everything was great !
Every time i get a chance to come to the city, always have dinner at the barrel room. Just love their food, wine, and the quality of the customer service.
Barrel Room is constantly changing their menu, so it’s hard to suggest a certain item. One issue we ran into was dish size. I got a sausage entree dish that was extremely large, while my girlfriend got a pasta entree dish that was tiny. Luckily there was plenty for me to share. If you’re very hungry, make sure you ask about entree size.
Great restaurant with excellent food, great drink options, and wonderful ambiance - I love that it's a little more hidden and not overbooked
We like this so much last week we returned again! Different initial waiter this time who was not as attentive and seemed in a rush not focusing on guest service. Glad we had our last waiter for the remainder of the meal. Looking at reviews there's some inconsistency in this area that could be improved. We did the champagne and wine flights were a good value, nice pours, and opportunity to taste wine we would not have tried. The food was excellent!
No complaints! I could eat those Brussels sprouts every day.
The flavors were unique and well balanced. The regional theme for the quarter makes this a place to return for a new experience. The spring green salad was unique and the best I've had at many fine places. Portions were more than satisfactory. The Venison Spezzatino was flavorful and tender: give it a try if you've never had venison, you will enjoy! If there is a boisterous party it does get loud however the wait staff and food override such inconvenience.
They did a fine job seating us and taking our order. The wine pours were pretty light, though. For a $20 glass of wine, I'd expect to have more than 4 sips. Kind of a bummer for a place that's trying to be a wine bar.
Great new Alpine menu
Novel food and wine selection
Food and service were excellent! However, the space was very cramped and the tables were very close together. Also, the noise level was very high and I could not hear anything that my guest was saying.
The food was delicious, but the server was unwilling to provide any descriptions of the wine. In a place that prides itself on wines, the servers should be able to interact with patrons, find out what sort of wines they like and make suggestions. From the get go, the server challenged my brother when he described wanting a medium-bodied red, low tannin and smooth. The server insisted there were many ways to interpret that. We were relieved when we went after to another wine bar and the person serving was friendly, and could make suggestions immediately based on what we said we wanted. I don't know how the other servers are there. They may be excellent and friendly. This was our experience of one server.
Super fast lunch service. We ordered the chopped salad with chicken and fish tacos. Both very good.
Great place for dinner! Awesome food and big collection of wine
Got there early for lunch. We were greeted warmly. We asked about the wine flights and the host was very informative and knowledgeable. We ordered wine and food and was served both promptly and well. Food was great. The place was filling up with the lunch crowd and had a nice vibe. All in all a very nice lunch.
We were accommodated at the bar, and then moved to a table with a reservation. The drink list was robust, service and food were excellent. They and we forgot one of our appetizers, but we left happy regardless.
I checked birthday when I reserved your restaurant throgh internet. But you didn't give me any special something even saying. I didn't understand why there's a check box for reservation purposes.
I enjoyed having drinks and appetizers for two work-related networking sessions with peer executives. The service and wine recommendations were outstanding!
Pricey and mediocre. Mediocre ambiance, service, and food. Not the best combination. I'll admit that the hostess was welcoming when we arrived and seated us right away, since we had reservations, but the server who brought us our entrees had such a cold demeanor. When she brought us the bill ($65 tax included for two people for lunch), she didn't even say thank you and she didn't say it when we walked by her to leave. We even said thank you to her out of politeness. I guess she and this establishment don't care very much for their customers.
On to the ambiance (or lack there of)...the tables are incredibly close together that you're about to bump elbows with your neighboring diners if you aren't careful. Everyone looks a bit uncomfortable and packed in. We made reservations early (before noon), so it wasn't very loud, but fast forward to noon and you won't be able to comfortably hear the person across from you. And did I mention that it was freezing in here when we first arrived? It really does take on the atmosphere of sitting in a barrel room.
Great food and there is something for everyone. A very nice wine selection too. Perfect for lunch or dinner.
Outstanding. Eating alone is often a challenge but here I was made to feel most welcome. Great selection of wines by the glass and a lovely rabbit gnocchi dish. Highly recommended.
Enjoyed SF Restaurant Week menu which included wine pairings. Food was excellent, the steak was a bit tough and chewy, and the wines were very good. Crab cake Had too much bread crumbs which is typical in SF. Hard to enjoy when you have experienced Maryland crab cakes which have next to no breadcrumbs. Also enjoyed a fabulous flight of Pinot Noirs! Ou waiter, Ryan, provided great service, was attentive and appeared at all the right times. Negatives: we were two women dining with reservations-instead of seating us at open table in front, she walked us to the back of the restaurant next to bus boy station and kitchen exit. She complied with my request for another table. She showed the next two women to the same table minutes later. Evening was marred by overly served table of six -shrill womens voices and men yelling followed by breaking glasses on the floor. They were so loud I couldn’t hear across my table, Why doesn’t management address this behavior instead of making it at the expense of the rest of the patrons ??? Overall I liked the restaurant, food, and great service. Would go back and hope the table of six isn’t there.
Our food came out so late compared to other tables and the food was not the same quality. The Brussels sprouts were soggy and seemingly drenched in the sauce. The pasta was just a heaping of mushrooms with small pieces of pasta. Very disappointed in the food and lack of urgency from the staff.
The food was really good (a few misses but more of a miss due to the tastes of us as guests versus the food) but what took away from the experience was the super tight tables, the staff couldn't even get to the far side of the table, and the incredible amount of noise due to overcrowded space. I would recommend this place for the food but remind you that you shouldn't expect to be able to have a clear conversation with your dinner guests.
Good food. Very loud. Get there early if you need to discuss business.
This place has a great selection of wines. I loved the wine flights, where they bring you 3 glasses of whatever wine flight you ordered and explain to you the origins and so on. The food was very delicious. The duck breast was my favorite.
It was a good get together. Fine food, fine wine and great waiter
