The Barrel Inn, a traditional Derbyshire country inn, dates back to 1597 and stands at the head of Bretton Clough, in the heart of the Peak District.

Being one of only five properties in this small hamlet, on a table of land some 1300 feet above sea level, The Barrel Inn proudly claims to be the highest pub in Derbyshire.

Its panoramic views of the majestic Hope Valley and the Peak District National Park are magnificent and on a clear day you are able to enjoy views over five counties.

The pub serves a fine selection of well kept real ales and delicious, freshly cooked, mostly locally sourced food, every day.

Old worldly charm - peaceful oak-beamed bar, real log fires, flagstone floors, studded doors in low doorways, beamed ceilings and polished copper and brass - have all been retained to enhance the overall charm and friendliness of the Inn.

Fabulous Sunday lunch visit in every respect. This was our first time to eat at The Barrel Inn and we will be returning! Can thoroughly recommend it in every respect. The Inn has the added bonus of the spectacular views. An absolute gem of a pub!

It was a fabulous evening out (not least because of the wonderful weather and time sitting outside). My only tiny niggle is that one of the party, who wanted alcohol-free beer because he was driving, felt that the choice was extremely limited. He was surprised by that, given the location of the Barrel Inn and the fact that many of the customers must be drivers. That apart, an excellent occasion for us. Thank you 😄

Visited on a weekday lunchtime for my husband’s birthday. Delicious food and wine and good service. We did an 8k circular walk from the pub after lunch which was beautiful with stunning scenery. Back to the pub for drinks on the terrace outside, perfect!

This pub is in the most amazing location with stunning views of the Peak District. We visited on a Monday lunch time for a light lunch. They should have been 5 of us but due to ill health we ended up being a group of 3. This was no problem. The service was cheery, & efficient. The food was absolutely delicious. Between us we had an asparagus dish, a ham terrine, & a very generous prawn & bacon sandwich, & chips (obviously) all of which were reported to be excellent. Will definitely return soon.

Lovely pub in a stunning location. Wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff. The food s very well presented, from a chef who understands flavour. The courses are a good size, not too big, so 3 courses are possible. Highly recommended
