The Barn Steakhouse
Featured in the Chicago Tribune and Evanston Now, The Barn is situated in a 19th century building, which was once a horse stable. Its entrance is accessible through the back alleyway for a unique experience. The intimate spot is accessible only through the alley and features soaring ceilings. This eatery also provides seating for up to 80 guests as well as outdoor seating on the winter garden.
Wonderful food with outstanding service. Very interesting locale in renovated barn. Definitely worth trying though not inexpensive.
This is a superb restaurant! We were visiting from Minneapolis and looking for something special in order to make the most of our trip. We sorted through the reviews for many restaurants and chose this one. We were absolutely 100% pleased with our choice! The food and wine are not inexpensive but if you re looking for wonderful meal in a fantastic setting, this is your place!
Wonderful as always! Their new ‘early-bird’ fixed price menu is amazing
It was awful. Did not serve Tanquery.
Excellent experience from the time we walked up to the restaurant and were warmly greeted by the valet parking staff (!) until we left a couple hours later. The staff is friendly and professional and have a thorough knowledge of the menu. The menu itself is not too small, not too large, but has something for everyone. The quality of the food is outstanding and is prepared to perfection. We loved the ambiance and decor and noted that the entire establishment is very well kept. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone who was looking for an excellent meal in a beautiful room.
We had a group of three couples for dinner and our request for a round table was honored. The menu offered such a wide range of options that, oddly enough, no one ordered a steak in a "steakhouse," but that was fine, everyone was pleased and I was very happy that my guests had choices. I enjoyed the bison ragu with pasta and would return time after time just for that dish. List of daily specials was enticing. Service was attentive, friendly without being obtrusive, no pressure or rush, we were able to take our time and linger over fluffly and not-too-sweet cherry cheesecake, perfect. Setting is cozy with low lighting, rustic barnwood, a very attractive and warm feeling, like an escape to a plush ski resort. My only quibble is with soundtrack of music played, kind of distracting and it was loud enough one of our party asked for it to be turned down; maybe a generational thing, we are all in our 50's. I will definitely return. :)
2nd time at this restaurant and had the same steak both times, unfortunately the food didn’t come close to meeting the level of quality the first time out. Service and ambiance are great, and my guests both said their meals were excellent.
Excellent, if pricey, dinner. The ribeye was terrific, but we loved, loved, loved the liver! So much flavor. Also loved the carrot cake for dessert. Mushroom side was a little over cooked. Great looking space.
Excellent meal for New Year's Eve. Salmon, Duck and lamb chops all cooked to perfection, service friendly and personal, and all the staff seem very customer-oriented. Would recommend to anyone. Prices are commensurate with what you get, which is excellent.
Our server Rodney was amazing.
New Years dinner
Really enjoyed the ambience of this restaurant. It is tucked away and a bit hard to find but once you find it you walk past a lovely patio with a fire blazing and into a secret passage to what feels like a speakeasy. Everyone in my party loved their food that ranged from filet to vegan. Their sides are delicious! The service is outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant.
One of my favorite restaurants in the area. Love the ambiance here and the food is always outstanding. Looking forward to dining at the Barn again soon!
We were immediately impressed and delighted by the room - lovely touches everywhere, without anything being overdone. The staff was universally welcoming, friendly and helpful. Not a touch of snobbery in this fairly high-end restaurant. Just a couple of disappointments in the food: we both ordered french onion soup, a real favorite but the onions were barely soft, no where near caramelized, and therefore the broth was pretty flavorless. Also, I was a bit suspicious of the béarnaise sauce - I really think a thickener was used based on the texture. The flavor was spot on. The roast Brussel sprouts were also slight under-roasted. The kitchen should not have been rushed, as we dined at 7 pm and the place was not completely full. The sommelier made a superb wine recommendation which we both loved. We will absolute go back on another special occasion since the overall experience was good - and hope for some improvements in the food.
The bartenders are the BEST EVER!!!
The food was excellent. Highly recommend the filet mignon along with creamed swiss chard and mac/cheese as sides. The desserts are also amazing. The rustic brick walls and chic industrial/barn vibe is both hip and comfortable. The noise level was lively but we could still talk easily. My only reservation was the service, while friendly and helpful, was simply mediocre. When we decided not to drink wine, the wine glasses remained on the table until we reminded them to remove them. The bar/drinks/wine book remained on the table until we simply removed it ourselves and placed it on another table to get it out of our way. The host seemed unfamiliar with floor pattern. Although we had placed a reservation well in advance of our visit and the restaurant was busy but not full, we were seated at a table right in front of the kitchen door. When we asked to sit elsewhere, they kindly accommodated us but with many better tables available plus we were NOT walk-ins, I felt they should have given us a better table without needing to be prompted. For the money we spent that night, the service should have been better. Still, I will look forward to returning and not hesitate to recommend.
Interesting hidden location and decor/ambiance. In general, overpriced for quantity and unreliable quality - for example, the special prime rib only offered thinner slices for the price, only fair quality (not worth the over $50 price tag). Macaroni and cheese and also the potato sides were stand outs (again, overpriced for the amount received). I would recommend tighter quality control and chisel a few dollars off entrees and sides.
This was my first time dining at the Barn. The food is fantastic and the service was excellent. Great atmoshere too!
Highly recommend the bone in Ribeye with peppercorn covering !
My branzino was ok (not fabulous) and my husband's beef wellington was overcooked so he sent it back. If the waiter had told him that he'd be waiting 35 minutes for them to remake the item, he would have ordered something else. We were in a group of 8 and everyone had finished dinner by the time he received the remade BW. The manager was very gracious about giving us free desserts and comping the BW entree, but the experience was still disappointing. We had the feeling that the waiter was avoiding us while the dinner was being remade (had to flag him down for more water, wasn't around so I could order a second glass of wine, etc.)
Barn failed to make a tasty Salmon dish for my wife without salt. They didn't add herbs or make a tasty salt-free sauce. Side dishes were all ready made and also included salt. Previously my wife's low sodium requirements were met.
The manager first blamed the chef, then he blamed the server, who had conveyed the specific instructions and a variety of herbs and condiments that would be acceptable. They also didn't have balsamic vinegar for a side salad - even though it was listed as an ingredient on one of the entrees.
The manager did offer to provide another dish and when that was rejected, he eliminated the Salmon from the bill. Valet parking is $12 which is expensive for Evanston.
It was very underwhelming. A server must have called in sick as the service was sub-par.
The steak was terrific. The accompanying side dishes were very underwhelming, the salad overdressed.
This party of four expected so much more.
I ordered a filet by recommendation of my server. It came overcooked and I sent it back. I did not receive another one for about 15 minutes later. My husband was already done with his dinner by then. We were out for a date night. The steak quality was good but not great. It was a bit gritty. Needless to say, I was disappointed.
The special prix fixe menu has nice choices, just the right amount of food, and is a very good deal!
Beautiful space but meal left much to be desired. we will not be back.
1. Drinks: Both my Manhattan and our wines were not generous pours.
2. Service: Friendly service but either they were understaffed or just in efficient. Relatively long wait for an initial drink order, with food coming out very fast, then another server having to clear the plates, followed by a long wait for the check.
3. Food: I had the Rib-eye steak. I've never been to a steak oriented place that serves a less than half inch thick steak - albeit large enough - that had no crust. Partner's pasta was small and Brussel sprouts had good flavor but were not cooked.
My wife and I had a meal comprised of four appetizers. They were “ok”, just “ok”. We expected more.., better. Average score for creativity, execution, and taste.
Service... We ate at the bar. The bartender tried but overall service in food delivery pacing and serving both of us at the same time was really not good.
Amy Morton would not have been pleased.
Food and service were wonderful. Other pace was a bit too noisy. Difficult to have a conversation because it was so loud in the restaurant.
Lovely atmosphere. Good menu, good service, great for conversation, good music. Good good!!
side that comes with Branzino wasn't much of anything but overall we had a good time
The entrance is very special and quite surprising. The whole environment is quiet and comfortable. Definitely I will recommend people coming here for special occasions. The service was great and the entree were pretty well. I ordered a fish dish and they kindly put the sauce on the side. The only thing I think was not as good was the bread before dinner. Kind of too hard to bite. But everything else was really great and exceeded my expectations.
The Barn never dissapoints. The steaks are amazing and there is always a fun cocktail list and great wines to choose from. I would recommend for special occasion as the price point is on the high side, but well worth it.
Unbelievable food, my father can’t wait to come back this summer! He can’t stop talking about the food and service! We’ve been wanting to take my parents for 3 years now, and it was worth the wait!
Our server, Ombré was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!
Second visit. Fantastic, well curated, and mostly unpretentious yet fancy menu. Great wine selections and cocktails both classic and modern. And a very special historical environment with a warm, buzzing, but not too trendy ambience. I loved the kick of heat in the crab cake, and my steak was done exactly as promised. Hat tip to our server who didn't bat an eye at my stepmom, the pickiest of diners, and my dad, who pretends he hears when he doesn't! For me the only hole in the menu is dessert; not much temptation there. Decorated beautifully, yet minimally, for the holidays. Go!
Delay from sitting down to food arriving was completely absurd. 45 minute or more wait from starters until main course arrived, with barely an apology.
Always a wonderful time in a setting that is 100 percent unique and gorgeous. 15 watts of light = tranquility!
My favorite restaurant in Evanston. Tomahawk steak is on point!
Great service and fantastic food.
The food was excellent, the ingredients fresh, with a creative menu. The service was low key and informative; our waiter was helpful. It was our first time at The Barn. We ordered steak, two different kinds, and both were cooked exactly to order, tender and delicious! My only criticism is that the tables (ours was a table for two) were too close together. When the waiter was talking to the people on either side of us, it felt intrusive, although it wasn’t his fault.
We had a fabulous time! The food, service, wine list- every person working here takes pride in the place and you can see that. Will definitely return.
Beautiful restaurant with lovely ambiance. Food was good. Steaks were worth the money and comparable to other restaurants with that quality meat, but the rest was overpriced and just not worth returning for that reason.
