Steakhouse
The Barn Steakhouse is a “meat-centric hideaway” housed in a 19th century brick barn hidden away down an alley in the middle of Evanston. A homage to owner Amy Morton’s legendary father, restaurateur Arnie Morton (Morton’s Steakhouse), the menu boasts the finest quality ingredients available including table-side salad service and prime heritage Angus steaks. As The Barn's menu is ever-evolving, the exact menu may be different when you dine.

Featured in the Chicago Tribune and Evanston Now, The Barn is situated in a 19th century building, which was once a horse stable. Its entrance is accessible through the back alleyway for a unique experience. The intimate spot is accessible only through the alley and features soaring ceilings. This eatery also provides seating for up to 80 guests as well as outdoor seating on the winter garden.

I took my husband there for his birthday and we had a nice time. The service was pin-point-precision and I was really impressed with our server. He was friendly, affable and knowledgable. He perfectly balanced checking in with us with leaving us alone so that we neither felt rushed nor ignored.
The food was good, with the only real ding being my husband's steak, which he ordered medium rare (a small feat for him as he usually orders medium, while I give him the evil eye for doing so) and it came out medium to medium-well. For this price point, steak temp just should not be missed. But, in all fairness, the quality if the meat is so excellent that even at medium-well it was a helluva delicious piece of meat. I ordered the halibut, which was very nice though a tisch under-seasoned for my palate which, admittedly, is salty, so I that's not necessarily a real critique. (EVERYTHING in my world can use more salt.)
The quarters are a bit snug so don't expect to have the most private conversation in the world while you're there. We were treated well and had a memorable meal, which was the whole goal. That I was able to cover the majority of the bill with a generous gift certificate from the holidays, though, certainly helped!

Celebrating our wedding anniversary at the Barn. Our first time after hearing a few good reviews from friends. The setting is very welcoming and while busy- was not loud or rushed at all. Our server Jessica was extremely warm and attentive. We started with their delicious Barn chopped salad and ceviche. Both were delicious. We had filet mignon as main course, which was cooked perfectly and a wonderful cut. We had Brussels sprouts and mushrooms on the side. Both were tasty. All in all, a wonderful experience.

We had dinner here for Mother's Day and were so disappointed. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the service was good, but our food was awful (and very expensive). My husband's steak was not cooked correctly, was tough and grisly and did not have any taste. The crab spaghetti was described as lump king crab meat- but was mushy and fishy and definitely not lump. I have never left a negative review of any restaurant, but when your bill is $275 and you leave very unhappy then we felt it necessary to let others know.

We gave the Barn a second chance after previously having a less than acceptable experience. Glad we did! Rewarded with Great food, great service, and an overall outstanding experience. Steaks and Bison Bolognese were awesome! Not cheap but wonderful experience in a truly great space. Will be back soon.

As always an amazing experience. The couple occupying our table before our reservation took much longer than expected which delayed our reservation by about 1/2 hour, but the hostess and floor manager was incredibly thoughtful and knowledgeable. We received complimentary drinks and incredible service throughout. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for an amazing steak with just great service in Evanston!

Our steaks were way too rare, even though we ordered them medium, they came out rare and had to be sent back To be cooked more. The portion sizes were small given the prices and the restaurant was incredibly noisy. We were disappointed!

I ordered a dry aged bone in ribeye
Pittsburgh style , black on the outside med rare on the inside, instead steak was moe med then I liked, I saw they had calves liver on the menus and I really wanted to try that but peer pressure got the better of me and ordered a steak. Sides and appetizers were great I would rate it with Ruth Chris’s or Morton’s steakhouse but I thought it was going to be a cut above!

Food was inconsistent and for these prices it wasn't worth it. Appetizers were good. side dishes were undercooked Brussel sprouts were hard and bitter, asparagus was too firm Mac and cheese was great however. My husbands dry aged steak was tough and difficult to eat, filets we tender and juicy. The waiters kept taking our plates before we were done eating. We would be talking amongst ourselves and look down and the food was gone even though we were not finished. Frustrating! desserts we just ok. Too expensive for what we got. Would rather go to Gibsons...

We had a table of seven to celebrate a birthday. I requested a round table...better for conversation...and we got one. Food was delicious and our waiter was excellent and patient with the two kids at our table. They don’t have a kids menu, but they have a hamburger on the regular menu, so no problem there. This is not a kid oriented place, it is a fine dining place. The children we brought were almost teens. The cocktails were well crafted and had an interesting twist on what you might expect. For example, the French 75 was pink from rose wine. Nice touch. We brought our own cake and the restaurant supplied a sparkling wine toast wit a non-alcoholic version for the kids and non drinkers. It was a festive fun time and we will definitely be back.

If you are looking for a different ambiance and very good food The Barn is the place. Their wait people are responsive, but not intrusive. We had three different meals and each one was very good. The desert was great. (if you like chocolate!)

Love the atmosphere in this place. Sat upstairs in loft booth and noise level was fine except for table that sat down during our dessert that clearly had some cocktails before dinner. Appetizers fantastic. Caviar sandwich, Crab cake with warm green goddess sauce, beef tartare (little chunky, prefer a smaller dice on the beef) no egg yolk on it, maybe creme fraiche? Still liked by all at table. Chicken entree super juicy, bison bolognese rich and hearty, warm spice. Two of us split filet, well crusted, perfect medium temperature. Only 2 drawbacks to meal - 1) mushroom side was SUPER salty, and 2) $100 bottle of wine was just this side of being too warm. Not sure how they store it, but it should have been about 10+ degrees cooler. We did not say anything, but in hindsight wish we had.

The Barn is always a great place but this experience was so-so because of the food. I had the spinach quiche that was served cold at first...and the boys all had the eggs benedict that they each said was pretty dull. That is not what we know The Barn to deliver in its food! Maybe they should have a few more brunch rehearsals before the next big one. (But, of course, the Bloody Mary was so fun with a bunch of added things in it!)

What a warm, cozy, but energetic atmosphere! Dinner for 4 - we all had steaks. Filet Mignon was disappointing (ordered rare, got medium rare - which rare steak eaters know the difference!) but Strip and Ribeye were delicious! The marrow butter potatoes are addictive! Side of brussel sprouts was delish and enough for 2, not 4. Too full for dessert!

The food was absolutely terrible. The salad was under-dressed and the combination of bacon and anchovies made no sense. The Brussels sprouts were soggy and horribly bitter, and the cheese and balsamic did nothing to disguise that. And my chicken was dense and flavorless, with a rubbery skin, and sat in a repulsive puddle of reduced sherry that tasted like a chemical spill. I know it’s a steakhouse, but how can you ruin such simple dishes unless you’re completely incompetent? Pretty room, decent service, and a wine list where distributors have dumped their undrinkable stuff.

Dear Badtaste- I am stunned to read this review. I am also sorry that you had such a terrible experience at The Barn Steakhouse. "Flavorless, repulsive, incompetent, w a wine list where distributors have dumped their undrinkable stuff". WOW?! Are you putting a coffee table book together based on your worst dining experiences...or perhaps you are a reviewer who only writes reviews of places you hate- then your screen name would make sense... "badtaste". Probably best not to come back.
