The Barn Steakhouse
Featured in the Chicago Tribune and Evanston Now, The Barn is situated in a 19th century building, which was once a horse stable. Its entrance is accessible through the back alleyway for a unique experience. The intimate spot is accessible only through the alley and features soaring ceilings. This eatery also provides seating for up to 80 guests as well as outdoor seating on the winter garden.
Valentine dinner for my wife and I. Wonderful ambiance. Food was outstanding. Staff was very friendly. Would go again.
It's a lovely atmosphere and the steak is very tasty, but the prices are ridiculous. And the chicken was mediocre, as was the mac n cheese.
Wonderful atmosphere - not your stuffy steakhouse! Delicious steaks.
Place is very nice! Food was great
We went to the Barn for a family Valentine’s Day special dinner with our 2 children 6 & 9. The service was perfect and the menu options varied enough for our family’s preferences with children. The ambience is calming and very chic. We loved it!
A nice time. Great food. Excellent service. Nice liquor. Will go again.
The food and service were incredible! We are so fortunate to have this gem in our town.
Everything was so delicious.
This is our absolute favorite restaurant in all of Chicago. Incredible staff, always a perfect meal, and great wine selection. The staff makes it over-the-top incredible. We love The Barn!!! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a nice steakhouse-style restaurant in a great venue. The exposed brick/warehouse feel makes for a lovely dining space. Food was excellent in all respects. Service was somewhat spotty, but it was quite crowded. We were also upstairs - as far from the kitchen and bar as possible. Getting up and down the only stairway is difficult for the staff - they need to dodge customers, and each other, up and down.
Our only complaints were finding it (it is hidden in the alley behind it's listed address. There is no access from the street). Secondly, the noise. This was quite possibly the noisiest restaurant I have been to in at least 20 years.
We will probably go back and would recommend it to others, but would warn them about the excessive noise.
Excellent food! Excellent service (thank you Mark) Only thing was the temperature in the Barn. We sat upstairs and it was incredibly HOT on February 2nd. We will sit downstairs next time because there will most definitely be a next time!
A nice newer spot. Make sure to ask for the write up on the history of the building. Parking would be one of my only complaints. $12 value plus tip in Evanston? It should be free. The paid parking spots right outside of the restaurant did not work with credit cards (coincidence?). We had a great waiter who was prompt and attentive. The food was very solid and the Lobster Tail was actually a good deal ($28). The wine list could be better but the prices were not excessive. We will go again.
Wonderful space. Attentive waiter. Meal–a "Provencal" vegetable medley–was only so-so (Perhaps that was to be expected given the restaurant's specialty of meat.) Dessert–a rich chocolate cake with layers of mousse–was grainy in texture. What I disliked most was the way my friend and I were received when we arrived five or ten minutes early for our 5 o'clock Saturday reservation. We were made to feel that we were inconveniencing the staff. There was no warm welcome.
The place was packed, service was extremely slow, and food was average and overpriced. Would not recommend.
Been there many times and brought guests several times too! AMAZING food, portions and great service!
Came here for my dad’s birthday. We had a great time and great food. Everyone was helpful in answering questions we had. Highly recommend the chocolate velvet cake.
Wonderful experience...I'm a vegetarian, and had a lovely dish!
My boyfriends birthday celebration, which was perfect!
Wonderful service, fantastic food and fabulous ambiance—
An excellent meal - great food, great wine, great service.
One of my favorite places now. It’s so lovely and cool and you feel like you are really having a wonderful EXPERIENCE. The food is divine. Can’t wait to go back.

This is a hidden jewel. The space is spectacular with incredibly high ceilings and beautiful brick work - it really was an old barn. Our group had steaks, lamp chops and pasta and everything was delicious and cooked exactly as requested. We are definitely returning and would highly recommend this wonderful restaurant.
We were there celebrating my husband’s Birthday, and I really appreciated they took note and brought out a little something special!
Wonderful food with outstanding service. Very interesting locale in renovated barn. Definitely worth trying though not inexpensive.
This is a superb restaurant! We were visiting from Minneapolis and looking for something special in order to make the most of our trip. We sorted through the reviews for many restaurants and chose this one. We were absolutely 100% pleased with our choice! The food and wine are not inexpensive but if you re looking for wonderful meal in a fantastic setting, this is your place!
Wonderful as always! Their new ‘early-bird’ fixed price menu is amazing
It was awful. Did not serve Tanquery.
The Barn doesn’t disappoint. It has become our local go-for for special occasions. Lovely room, excellent service, and delicious food.
Excellent experience from the time we walked up to the restaurant and were warmly greeted by the valet parking staff (!) until we left a couple hours later. The staff is friendly and professional and have a thorough knowledge of the menu. The menu itself is not too small, not too large, but has something for everyone. The quality of the food is outstanding and is prepared to perfection. We loved the ambiance and decor and noted that the entire establishment is very well kept. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone who was looking for an excellent meal in a beautiful room.
We had a group of three couples for dinner and our request for a round table was honored. The menu offered such a wide range of options that, oddly enough, no one ordered a steak in a "steakhouse," but that was fine, everyone was pleased and I was very happy that my guests had choices. I enjoyed the bison ragu with pasta and would return time after time just for that dish. List of daily specials was enticing. Service was attentive, friendly without being obtrusive, no pressure or rush, we were able to take our time and linger over fluffly and not-too-sweet cherry cheesecake, perfect. Setting is cozy with low lighting, rustic barnwood, a very attractive and warm feeling, like an escape to a plush ski resort. My only quibble is with soundtrack of music played, kind of distracting and it was loud enough one of our party asked for it to be turned down; maybe a generational thing, we are all in our 50's. I will definitely return. :)
2nd time at this restaurant and had the same steak both times, unfortunately the food didn’t come close to meeting the level of quality the first time out. Service and ambiance are great, and my guests both said their meals were excellent.
Excellent, if pricey, dinner. The ribeye was terrific, but we loved, loved, loved the liver! So much flavor. Also loved the carrot cake for dessert. Mushroom side was a little over cooked. Great looking space.
Excellent meal for New Year's Eve. Salmon, Duck and lamb chops all cooked to perfection, service friendly and personal, and all the staff seem very customer-oriented. Would recommend to anyone. Prices are commensurate with what you get, which is excellent.
New Years dinner
Our server Rodney was amazing.
Really enjoyed the ambience of this restaurant. It is tucked away and a bit hard to find but once you find it you walk past a lovely patio with a fire blazing and into a secret passage to what feels like a speakeasy. Everyone in my party loved their food that ranged from filet to vegan. Their sides are delicious! The service is outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant.
One of my favorite restaurants in the area. Love the ambiance here and the food is always outstanding. Looking forward to dining at the Barn again soon!
We were immediately impressed and delighted by the room - lovely touches everywhere, without anything being overdone. The staff was universally welcoming, friendly and helpful. Not a touch of snobbery in this fairly high-end restaurant. Just a couple of disappointments in the food: we both ordered french onion soup, a real favorite but the onions were barely soft, no where near caramelized, and therefore the broth was pretty flavorless. Also, I was a bit suspicious of the béarnaise sauce - I really think a thickener was used based on the texture. The flavor was spot on. The roast Brussel sprouts were also slight under-roasted. The kitchen should not have been rushed, as we dined at 7 pm and the place was not completely full. The sommelier made a superb wine recommendation which we both loved. We will absolute go back on another special occasion since the overall experience was good - and hope for some improvements in the food.
The bartenders are the BEST EVER!!!
The food was excellent. Highly recommend the filet mignon along with creamed swiss chard and mac/cheese as sides. The desserts are also amazing. The rustic brick walls and chic industrial/barn vibe is both hip and comfortable. The noise level was lively but we could still talk easily. My only reservation was the service, while friendly and helpful, was simply mediocre. When we decided not to drink wine, the wine glasses remained on the table until we reminded them to remove them. The bar/drinks/wine book remained on the table until we simply removed it ourselves and placed it on another table to get it out of our way. The host seemed unfamiliar with floor pattern. Although we had placed a reservation well in advance of our visit and the restaurant was busy but not full, we were seated at a table right in front of the kitchen door. When we asked to sit elsewhere, they kindly accommodated us but with many better tables available plus we were NOT walk-ins, I felt they should have given us a better table without needing to be prompted. For the money we spent that night, the service should have been better. Still, I will look forward to returning and not hesitate to recommend.
