The Barley Mow
We are delighted our customers love the warm welcoming ambience of the pub and enjoy the traditional and slightly quirky decor.
The Barley Mow’s Sunday lunch always offers a choice of three meats, fresh vegetables and goose fat roast potatoes. We also offer a homemade vegetarian option and can cater for gluten free and other requirements, just ask us. We strongly advise you book to avoid disappointment.
We arrived early for our table and was able to sit and order our food straight away. The restaurant wasn’t busy as we decided to eat early in the afternoon. The service was great and the food was well presented and tasty. Overall a lovely experience.
Lovely cosy, romantic atmosphere, good home cooked food and excellent service!
Based on the visit on Saturday the 18th I cannot say I would recommend The Barley Mow to anyone or plan to go there again for a meal. When we finally got our meals the food it was of a good standard and generally good value for money. BUT - we were disappointed with the evening for the following reasons.
One of our party was an gentleman of 97 and we had requested a table with wheelchair access when booking. This request was met but it would have been useful if they had called us to advise they do not have wheelchair access into the premises. Luckily he can walk but it was not easy getting him up the steps to the entrance door which did not even have a hand rail for him to use.
Once we were seated were told one of the main meal specials of the day was not available and also one other main on the other menu. I asked for clarification of what mains could be provided gluten free. This info. was provided but when I chose one of these I was then advised it too was not available as well as one other main in this category. This meant that for an early evening Saturday night booking four mains from a fairly limited menu were not available and for me, having to be gluten free, the choice was extremely limited.
Excellent evening with very good food service and value. Will definitely recommend
Had a great evening
Great customer service and food excellent. The pub felt very warm and welcoming.
Wasnt keen on the animal skins on the seating or the stuffed fox in the glass cabinet. Food was okay but a bit overpriced. Waitress got one of our orders wrong so one of our party was about 20 minutes behind the rest of us... not ideal.
I would really hesitate because of the very poor service. The food we had was good, hot and tasty but the poor service was terrible. Our mains order was taken at about 1.30pm and we got our meal fairly quickly. We requested desserts at about 2.25pm and were given a menu. Even though we spoke to our waitress shortly after, we waited a further 45 minutes she had still not come to take our order. She seemed determined not to catch anybody's eye. By now it's 3.10pm and we had to leave by 3.30pm. When I complained at the bar, they were very apologetic and said we would not receive desserts before it was time to leave so you lost out on dessert course and/or coffee. All seats were taken and there appeared to be only 3 waitresses, including behind the bar which would obviously affect speed. I was the one that suggested the Barley Mow and left feeling embarrassed at the poor service.
Fantastic food in a lovely pub. Great service. Would recommend - We will definitely be returning
Would definitely revisit , we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening
The steak and ale pie looked delicious and the puff pastry crust was perfect. Underneath, though, there wasn’t a lot of meat and the pastry casing was so hard It was inedible.
The food was amazing and the service was outstanding too.
The food was pretty tasteless and presented in a very amateurish way ( especially as it is on the more expensive side in comparison with other similar pubs). The gun in chiddingly is a similar set up but the food is much better. Lasagne really tasteless and looked unappetisingly pale. Garlic bread so full of garlic I couldn't taste my pudding after. Black pudding on one dish was uncooked. Fish and chips came as three pars of fish like large goujouns rather than a traditional whole cod/ place. The lighting could do with toning down, the bar is lovely but the restaurant too bright, no candles lit either. We had a very charming waitress who was attentive and extremely obliging. There was little point complaining about the meal at the time as there was something wrong with three out of the four meals , which were all different choices and the fact that they were so unappetising was not going to be able to be put right. Nice pub, nice furniture, nice staff, but the food is sadly poor and that's what we went there for.
Good service and lovely food
It's always a delight to visit and enjoy the most excellent hospitality
The staff were very good.
Prices were high Carvery for £16.50 ( with service charge )
Potatoes were not roasted & very hard ( not cooked fresh )
Veg was only warm.
Worst service charge added, you could remove it but that was difficult.
Lovely old pub, food choices good and food delicious. Service was very good. Will definitely be back
Brilliant as usual. Never disappoints. Love the food as well as the atmosphere.
Lovely place the only thing - ran out of Pinot Grigio and then forgot to bring the second choice but other than that excellent. Very nice staff all very good
5 adults - went for my son's birthday. As usual, a friendly welcome, great atmosphere, delicious food. One of our party has a particularly good soup! Others had roasts, fish and chips, and a ploughman's lunch (with a splendid array of relishes). The service was excellent, our waitress very helpful on explaining ingredients of some dishes. The dining area is comfortable, light and tastefully decorated. Plenty of room in car park and easy to get to. Thanks again Barley Mow for a great experience.
We went on a quiet Wednesday lunchtime and all had veg lasagne. Tasty and not too large for lunch (massive portions put all 3 of us off). Service was very friendly and we liked the cushions and faux sheepskins on benches to make seating more comfortable and cosy.
Lovely friendly waitress. We were meeting my son for lunch, booked the table for 12.30 but he got held up on the M23 and was about 3/4 hour late but she was really nice about it, although they were very busy she didn't rush us or make us feel bad for probably disrupting the timetable. Excellent food and service
Great food and friendly staff! Will definitely be returning soon!
We have not visited The Barley Mow for some years. We had a lovely meal and, although the restaurant was busy, the service was excellent.
We have driven past this pub a lot and always wanted to try it.
It had a good menu and the food was well cooked. All 4 of us agreed it was very good
The Barley Mow is one of our favourite locals. The food is excellent and atmosphere welcoming and cosy. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we would recommend it for a night out with friends.
Lovely food, nice surroundings, easy to park, big garden with play area for children
We booked this restaurant/pub for a lunch en route to another venue, and were not disappointed. We were welcomed by friendly staff and the food was great. We sat inside, which was very interesting and fairly quiet, but we later realised that this was because most of the customers were in the garden enjoying a bit of late summer sunshine. There is a large car park and children's play area. We would like to go back sometime, but it is quite a long way from where we live. Highly recommended.
Just a couple having lunch and a jolly good day. Thank you!
I'm not sure if I would recommend this pub to a friend. We were meeting friends for lunch and the Barley Mow is equidistant from our homes. The service and food were better the last time we ate there. This last time we visited it was Tuesday after BH Monday and it seemed the staff had not recovered from a very busy BH. The service was slightly chaotic and some things were not available on the menu. We won't be meeting our friends there again.
very good place for a Sunday lunch with our family of mixed ages 89-2! Lovely play area for the children and dog friendly too. Staff were very helpful and efficient. Will book again.
The staff were friendly and helpful, there was a good choice of foods and they tasted great
Food, staff and atmosphere excellent. We love going to the Barley Mow.
The meal was fabulous, as was the service. The play area is great, my daughter loved it! Lovely place. Xx
We used to love coming here, however Saturday will be our final visit. We went for the hog roast they have advertised, we were so looking forward to it but when arriving we were told it wasn’t on. No explanation given? Before we even sat down at our table we were being asked what we wanted to drink, little strange and very forceful, we hadn’t even had chance to look at the menu?! My mum and I each had a rose spritzer (wine drinks mega expensive and we felt rushed through the whole thing. Not great service.
We arrived on time for our booking, however, it was not clear if they were expecting us. After our meal we were contacted to ask why we had not honoured our booking!
Service was pleasant and the ambiance was good. We ate inside.
The food was perfectly acceptable, typical pub-fare. 3 of our party had fruit trifle for desert - absolutely delicious - so much so that 1 of our group asked for and received the recipe.
I ordered a roast Beef, the beef was very nice but as for the rest very very poor. The so called Yorkshire’s were soggy and awful and for me the rest was no better. My wife ordered the Lamb and she said that was very nice but like me the rest very unforgettable.
The dining room itself is very outdated and in need of a lick of paint, Sorry to say would not go back or recommend. Thank you
Lovely setting, food was not as good as normal. Normally very good was a shame
Very efficient and friendly staff. Lovely food (in our case only comment is chips were a bit pale)!
I have eaten at the barley mow for some time and have seen it go steadily downhill. The food is very average and the service rather slow. The place is still appealing and it is family friendly. The price is not cheap. If you want a child friendly pub and are not too fussy about the quality of the food and service then this could be the place for you. Personally I’ll be looking for somewhere else to take my teenage grandchildren.
We showed up early and were shown to our reserved table. The ladies who looked after us were brilliant. It was a meal for friends, but one had a birthday and when I asked if they could produce the birthday cake I had brought with me they did so without any questions. The young lady who served us was very knowledgeable about the gins they had and the recommendations were well appreciated. The food was lovely, the atmosphere excellent and the whole experience was relaxed and enjoyable. We all had a lovely evening and The Barley Mow would be perfect for all. There were couples, families and small groups all having a very pleasant Friday evening. Thank you.
Sat outside, food wasn’t very hot? Quite expensive for what it was
