The Backspace - Austin Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I ate here on a Friday night. The dining area is very small, so reservations are highly recommended. We sat next to each other so could easily hear each other despite the bustle around us. I'd suggest this restaurant more for smaller parties because of the size of the space and your ability to hear one another. The two pizzas we ordered were great. (We shared with each other, but they are personal size.) The beer and wine list could be a bit more robust. A split dessert was okay but messy per how they had presented a crumble type thing in a tiny glass container and no plate underneath. The meal was a little over $50 with alcohol, which is very reasonable in Austin. I'd definitely go back for another casual meal. The service was good, too.
I love this place everytime we go! We usually go for my husband's birthday and we always have a wonderful time. The mood is so intimate and the service is always so prompt and kind. The food is on another level. It's within steps of austin nightlife, so it's perfect for date night. This place makes my heart happy. Wish we could go more often!!!
Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re looking to get in and out. They brought our check with our food and told us how much time we had before the next reservation was due for our table. We weren’t offered dessert (which we’re planning to order) and they made a point of taking our plates and glasses as soon as we appeared to slow down. We weren’t just hanging out, we ordered appetizers and then a couple of pizzas to share. Service was good until they wanted to turn the table and they made us feel rushed.
We greatly enjoyed the food, had pizzas and an appetizer, which were all spectacular, however the sun was shining into the windows and into my husband's face throughout the meal, and it was also uncomfortably warm. The blinds were closed but were sheer. I would return based on the food quality but probably would not go during the day in summer.
The service was the only item I can complain about and fortunately it was the first time we have experienced substandard service. Our server was relatively prompt in greeting us and got us set up with drinks and then appetizers. Soon after he came to take entree orders and we were not ready. We had not seen one of our guests in some time and were engrossed in conversation so we had not taken time to decide on pizza. He returned and we again explained we were not ready. A third visit and we good naturedly suggested that on his next visit we would be ready.
Ready to order I was keeping an eye out for him and was disappointed that he passed the table a couple of times without even making eye contact. I flagged down a woman to ask that she notify our server that we were ready and she said, "I'm training but I can take your order." She did a fine job other than a mix up with water and wine so the night continued in a positive manner. Our server seemed to give up on us until the end of the meal when he cleared some plates and asked if we wanted anything else.
My husband and I always make it to The Backspace every time we go to Austin for a trip. We were only in town for a night this time and this was a must-have for our dinner date! Always a great ambiance, FANTASTIC pizza(!!) and this time we brought our 7 month daughter. The staff was very accommodating and we felt very welcome! We will return next time we are in the Austin area!
Amazing as always. Every time we come we know we can count on the food and staff to be amazing and once again they didn't disappoint. Only complaint would be that it was a little warm in there but that's to be expected in Texas in the middle of June when it's 100 degrees outside and you are at a small restaurant with a 900 degree oven going.
We love this place. It's our kind of pizza (just take a look at the pictures on the website). And they have fantastic appetizers (braised greens and burrata for example) and a great selection of wine (love that they describe the wines on the menu). Very small place, but we like that because it makes it seem that much more authentic. You should space out your ordering a bit because the pizza does come out really quick as they cook it in the wood-fired oven (which also creates that amazing taste including the slight burnt edges).
Greatly enjoyed our double date here! The lamb and pork meatballs are delicious! We also shared the margherita and roasted mushroom pizzas. It's a great spot to meet with a small group of friends (only 30 seats in the restaurant I believe). Sharing meatballs and two pizzas we perfect for us (plus some beers). All in all a great dinner and I plan to go back!
I love everything about this place! We've moved away from Austin and still make a point to visit when we're in town. The pizza is THE BEST wood-fired around, with the freshest ingredients and most perfectly chewy/toasty crust. The servers are always warm and friendly, and took exceptional care with our visit. Only downside is they're so tiny! But that makes it feel special when you get in ;)
Wonderful food and atmosphere. Great for a date night or other special occasion. Very small restaurant so definitely make reservations. Wine is very pricey. Paid $50 for a $20 bottle of wine but the atmosphere and the food are totally worth the expense. Service was awesome! Try the fresh mozzarella! It was heavenly!
We had a great experience. Meat board and homemade mozzarella was yummy. Didn't care as much for the mushroom pizza but pepperoni was good. Kids didn't love the "gourmet" pizza. We went 5:45 on a Thursday and it was quiet and calm which I like. Very few seats, small place. Overall very good for the adults. Average for the kids.
The rise of neapolitan pizza in Austin has maybe left me picky, but I was a little surprised at how average the pizza was during our lunch. The dough had the great taste of a good neapolitan crust, but was undercooked and barely held its structure. The basil had little flavor and was watery, which wasn't a pleasing texture.
The service was also pretty horrible. I love restaurants where the staff doesn't drop by every second, but our waitress really took it to an extreme. Granted, we went during SXSW which I wouldn't normally do, because I understand it's a generally terrible time for those working in the area. I would like to give our waitress the benefit of the doubt regarding our service, so maybe this wasn't a normal occurrence. However, we asked our waitress for water when we received our food, and it wasn't until she saw us receiving the check from a different server that she brought the water to our table, despite the place being fairly empty.
In general, I would say that service is always hit and miss, due to restaurant staff being human beings with bad days, so reviewing based on one bad experience isn't really fair. However, I don't think the food is stellar in any way. The raw dough, lackluster ingredients, and the presence of better pizza competition in Austin makes me wonder why I have always heard great things about this place.
