About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
Installed in a building once occupied by a Golden Era clothing store, M. Schwartz, The Artist’s Palate restaurant has brought back life to Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Designers have reworked the interior space of the 70-seat dining room to combine cosmopolitan elegance with an edgy industrial accent. Like the décor, the menu showcases innovation: An extensive array of wines, handcrafted beers and unique cocktails complement our revolving seasonal menu. The lunch menu is available for delivery within the city from 11am-2:30pm.

As its name suggests, The Artist’s Palate treats food as art, introducing new flavor combinations to local and regional diners. What is more, the restaurant gallery is committed to showcasing the best of up-and-coming local artists in a revolving exhibition. When it opened in 2006, the restaurant was quickly lauded by local and regional restaurant critics and discerning diners. The Artist’s Palate has fast become a Dutchess County institution.

Very impressed with the quality and creativity of the food at this restaurant. Three of us had very different menu choices and all were delicious. And the art work is magnificent!

This was our fourth time dining at The Artist’s Palate and we were not disappointed. Service and food met our expectations.

Where to start...upon entering the restaurant my party was very excited to enjoy the nice atmosphere and delicious smells. Our server informed us that they were slightly overbooked that evening. That being said, our meal was one disappointing mess after another. We never received bread or a chefs tasting plate. Our appetizers came after 45 minutes (and some were forgotten). We ordered the artist's plate of meat and cheeses that was served with chips that were completely stale and broken. We then waited about another hour for our main courses to arrive. Some of the plates were very good, but the portions were extremely small for the prices. We also ordered a plate that came with a poached egg on it that was completely overcooked. When we informed our waiter and he politely took it back and returned with another poached eggs that was completely raw, which ruined the entire dish. We sent the dish back and asked to have it taken off the bill. Our waiter returned the raw egg plate to the head chef/owner who did absolutely nothing. No one came to ask us about our meal or apologize for the inedible food. We were celebrating my mother's 60th birthday and had asked for a dessert for her. We waited another half hour or more to receive a dish with an unlite candle and no singing. While we were waiting we watched another table receive their dessert with a lit candle and multiple wait staff singing for their birthday. They also charged us $8 for an extremely dry piece of cake that we waited over a half an hour for. After this whole experience our waiter brought our check and we paid for our meal. He came back to tell us he forgot to put items on the bill and had to charge us again. When I went to speak with him about how disappointed I was about our experience he completely ignored me as he swiped our credit card again for the items he forgot.

Don't be fooled by the sleepy downtown feel of Main Street - The Artist's Palate is anything but! The space has a very cool vibe with exposed brick and NYC street scene paintings done but a local artist. The open kitchen in the back allows for easy access to the chefs who happily share suggestions on the menu. The choices are varied, unique and delicious. We started with a couple of cheese/meat plates to share followed by the ricotta dumplings, grilled quail and heirloom squash salad. The wine selection was excellent and the service was attentive and friendly. I definitely recommend The Artist's Palate when in Poughkeepsie!

Initially made reservations for eight people and at the eleventh hour just about doubled it. They accommodated us cheerfully and I am so incredibly glad they did. The food was great, the service was wonderful (no mean feat for a table of 14), and the ambiance was perfect. Really great spot, would not hesitate to come back.

Great restaurant in downtown. Innovative menu with knowledgeable, friendly service. Really like their drink menu. Trust me on trying the drink made with golden beet vodka. Really refreshing and tasty. Their take on lobster Mac and cheese was off the charts as well

The Artist’s Palate is a nice place to have dinner before attending a show at the Powerhouse Theater at Vassar. What I ordered (swordfish with black rice, mango salsa and corn fritters ) was thoughtfully prepared with an interesting combination of flavors. I especially loved the olive oil cake dessert! The meal was pricey but good. I ordered a decaf Americano after my meal, and the server asked me how to make it, so I said, never mind. But he googled instructions, and brought me a very nice coffee indeed, so A+ for effort to the server.

I ordered the lamb meatballs & salad & one of their signature drinks. I came away with feeling the food was mediocre given all the hype. The drink was delicious & refreshing (gin marmalade) Service was very good.
