The Apparatus Room
The menu delivers classic American fare with Executive Chef Thomas Lents at the helm. Dishes feature locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients.
During the daytime, the bar serves as a coffee counter with seating featuring local partner, MadCap Coffee, and pastries prepared in house. The beverage program encompasses a strong classic and craft cocktail list, various local beers will be highlighted, as well as a hand selected culinary driven wine list.
The food was pedestrian. Other than a few of the appetizers, including the deviled eggs and pimento cheese, the rest was not terribly flavorful. The pork chop was cut off the bone, and wasn't seasoned. Our simple test is would we go back for seconds, and the answer is no.
Really truly a high-quality joint. All aspects were perfect food-service and outstanding ambience. Even the noise level wasn’t bad for such a Caverness dining room
First time at Apparatus Room. The food was very good, but we weren’t given the appropriate amount of time to consume it. The timing of the service was terrible. Our server asked for our entire order immediately. We asked her to come back to get our entree orders. She gave us about 5 minutes more and came back. Our starters were on the table for maybe 5-10 minutes before the entrees arrived! There was barely enough room on our small table for all of the food. We ended up taking the starters home. . We couldn’t imagine why we were being so rushed when the restaurant wasn’t even that busy. There were many open seats and our reservation was at 5:00. This is just not the kind of service one would expect at a restaurant like the Apparatus Room. Whether it was the fault of the kitchen or the server, it wasn’t acceptable. Not sure if I would return, maybe for drinks and a snack.
Went for drinks!
Brunch was good and a good value, but I suspect their full menu is even better.
Love the decor and the food was good, especially the pancakes. Our server wasn't very good and it definitely affected our experience.
Another great meal at Apparatus Room. One sour note was we were originally seated near the entrance and there was a constant cold draft coming our way. Very u comfortable. We asked to be moved and they accommodated our request. Otherwise, it would have been a miserable experience
Fantastic place! But it was freezing! Very breezy with doors opening, even my husband was cold, which never happens. Most people ate with their jackets on. Food incredible, service excellent.
Food & service were amazing!!
Brunch was simply delicious! The sourdough pancakes, drizzled with lemon curd, were as large as the plate they came on & had plenty of fresh blueberries throughout them. The Breakfast Ala Francaise was a perfect sized omelet filled with sautéed leeks, mushrooms & cheese
Terrible service-forgotten items, slow, limited attention from the wait staff. Frankly, had looked forward to going but won’t be back. Great example of a restaurant losing sight of what’s important.
Excellent service and meal for Valentine’s Day with BF. Knowledgeable, engaging server and a classic menu with unique takes. Refreshing drinks, classy atmosphere, and comfy seats!!!! Next time I have a special occasion, I will be back.
Great ambiance. Great service. Food is unbelievable. Unique in presentation and flavor. The filet mignon was better than any major steakhouse. One of our favorite restaurants in Detroit.
The Restaurant is beautiful and really makes a statement when you walk in and makes great conversation for those who know the history of the space. The food on the other hand did not make the same impression.
Came for Valentines Day, really thought the service was great and before any food came out it was shaping up to be a great night. But when the food came out we just weren’t impressed, now maybe we just didn’t like the itema the restaurant was offing considering it was a fixed menu. I would like to go back when it’s not as busy and so I can actually choose what I would want to eat.
Great food and great service! Beautiful ambience!
For $95 a person I was extremely underwhelmed with the quality of the food, which was in line with the verdict of the surrounding tables. Would not recommend except for a burger at the bar.
Wonderful food, atmosphere, service and overall dining experience. Went during a special occasion, so there was a fixed menu. However, the 5 course selection was phenomenal. Definitely will recommend to friends and family!
The chefs menu was well put together with excellent pairings. It was a treat to start with oysters, move to salad and scallops, and finish with an awesome presentation of salmon. It was also charming to see how the wines increased from pink to red in celebration of Valentine’s Day. The entire staff was gracious- great experience
The worst meal I have had, even taking the Valentine’s Day rush into account. The best plate was the pimento cheese, which was so so, and on a good bread too big and thick as a course in the meal. The oysters with seaweed minuet tasted like seaweed only. The salads were bad, the one tiny piece piece of orange the only highlight in a pile of meh roasted beet salad. The scallops were unenjoyable, fishy tasting and inconsistently cooked. The sauces didn’t tie flavors together and were bland. Pasta and venison was just ok. Skipping to the end, the crispy potatoes were hard on the outside and raw in the middle, with a bland yogurt sauce that added nothing.
The biggest problem was the concept of the dishes. Ingredients and sauces didn’t work together, appearing to be added just because. Not once all night did anyone say, ‘Wow, you have to taste this.’
I found myself eating more of each dish to find a good bite, before giving up on each one because it wasn’t there.
Service was attentive, but overbearing, twice taking the family style plate from my hands before I was done serving. I attribute this to the restaurant pushing too hard to turn tables on a holiday.
Overall a very expensive bad meal. Food was so bad it wasn’t worth paying any price.
Fantastic room, just beautiful. Good service. The dinner didn’t live up to the hype and location.
Great atmosphere and wonderful food! We enjoyed the Chef's choice meal, each course was fabulous and catered to a Gluten Free allergy need. We left very full and satisfied! Great date night.
Excellent service, amazing food (oh those scallops!), and super cool and classy ambiance. Highly recommend.
Server was disengaged from the outset. Informed server of gluten allergy/celiac disease, was rather dismissive and informed me that “a lot of the dishes are gluten free”. I informed her of the items I was interested in before my date was ready to order. This should have given her time to look into whether these were truly gluten free. After ordering items, she informed me one item was not gluten free (winter soup) a few minutes after ordering. This was okay, I would rather abstain. Then it seemed as if the kitchen was trying to make up for it by giving us a cauliflower app on them. Nice treat, I thought. It turned out this was not truly gluten free either as it had been fried in a contaminated fryer. I will undoubtedly get sick from the cauliflower. All of this could’ve been avoided if the server was more proactive, had a better attitude, and if there was better communication between staff. All in all, not worth my money or future business.
My main course was one of the best I've had anywhere...I was blown away. And the service was exemplary. A great evening for sure!
Wonderful birthday celebration for my wife Lianne. Food was sublime, service even better!
The food was delicious and very timely. Had a wonderful experience would highly recommend!
fantastic food . timing during the first 45 min to an hour needs to be worked on . we waited one full hour before there was anything edible on the table ( i can suggest some nice bread and a few things to keep us occupied)
So disappointed with my Saturday night visit to Apparatus Room for a late night birthday dinner. I was looking forward to it so much. The space and atmosphere are nice but it's really nothing special. It's quite cold (literally as the space is so open and large) and has a corporate feel to it. The place lacks character. The most important component is the food and it was totally below my expectations. We ordered an appetizer - these cheese pastry balls with a spicy sauce inside. Didn't taste the "old cheddar" at in them at all. It was good but again, nothing special and not worth the price. I ordered the venison ragu pasta and it was not good at all. It had a very meaty flavour and that's all I could taste (I couldn't' even finish it). My husband had the pork chop and it was ok. Again, nothing to rave about. I definitely expect a much higher level cuisine given the hype and pricing at this place. I will not be back. There are so many other good restaurants in Detroit.
Service was horrible! I would give it another try. The food was delicious. Our dessert with the cookie was hard as a rock.
Loud, but great atmosphere. Excellent cocktail selection. We shared about 6 menu items--everything was outstanding!
Place is nice. Food was good. Do not miss the fried cauliflower and the gougères.
beyond our expectations. waiter was clean cut, nice guy, and was properly trained. (he knew his stuff)
We went to the auto show last week and stopped in for a beer / bread with pimento. Excellent experience. And thanks you for whoever figured out the layout, we love it. Will have my 101st Airborne guys down there this summer!
Such a beautiful restaurant. We had such a nice time. Our waitress was great and gave us wonderful recommendations. We went for brunch and will definitely be back. Also, we hope to try the dinner
Schedule a reservation for 4 to celebrate my wife's Birthday. The only time to seat 4 people was at 5:15 PM. We requested that if a later reservation opened up to have our reservation moved to a later slot.
Arriving on time at 5:15 PM the restaurant was half empty. They seated the 4 of us at a bench table for 10 next to a window with a strong draft. There were at least 6 empty tables in the restaurant. We requested to be moved to a smaller table away from the window but were told that those tables had reservations at 7:00 PM and were unavailable.
We the inquired about the heat. The waitress said that this table is always cold and she will look for the space heater that they use at this location. She was unable to locate a space heater but 15 minutes later the manager came over with a Blanket for my wife and daughter.
We finished our $350.00 dinner with 3 of us wearing our winter coats on and my wife and daughter sharing a blanket to keep warm. When we were leaving 3 of the 6 tables set for 4 inside the restaurant were still empty. Needless to say that we left the Apparatus Room and went to another restaurant for Birthday dessert and after dinner drinks.
This was our 3rd time at The Apparatus Room. Once for a launch event, once for a group dinner and now to celebrate my wife's birthday with the family. There are many other options to chose from for a better dining experience.
I did not like that there were no vegetarian or fish lunch options
Loved this place. The food was good. The design is impressive, especially the bar area. Service was great.
I loved the decor. The food was excellent. I loved the music selection. I will be a regular.
Great first experience at Apparatus. Both food and service were amazing!
It was wonderful, food was fantastic!
Food is overpriced for the quality provided. Its a really nice ambient though - which you pay for.
