The Angel at Hetton
Michael Wignall delivers food that wows on every plate. His ever evolving style creates unique dishes full of flavour, underpinned by a contemporary, less formal approach to fine cuisine. Describing his food as ‘modern, technical and meaningful’, each element brings flavour or texture, enticing diners to experience new combinations and ingredients.
We came to the Angel with a very strong recommendation and were not disappointed. Although we had the Sunday roast it was perfectly executed without losing any of the traditional Yorkshire feel. The puddings were sublime and beautiully served. All constituted excellent value. We will definitely return.
Great birthday lunch - particularly the ox & meadow course - will be coming back to try the tasting menu
Absolutely fantastic Venu, after living in the local area as a child, and working there many years ago, it was a fantastic opportunity to dine there finally. The food and service were second to none, using fresh seasonal and local produce they have crafted works of art on the plate.
My only minor concern was the quietness of the restaurant, no background music etc. I guess it wouldn't be so bad on a busy evening, but on a Monday night, with only a few tables, it was very quiet.
Simply stunning. You must go. Food sublime and staff excellent. All you need to know really.
The visit we had was not just about good food. It turned out to be a wonderful experience as well. The food is superb and the staff are excellent. Do not hesitate to go, it is fantastic
We’ve been a few time’s and never left disappointed. Amazing tasting menu, some really original flavours. Great selections of wines from across the globe and styles. Staff are fantastic, attentive but not in your face. Would thoroughly recommend for any occasion.
Beautiful food, and the flavour matched the presentation. The set lunch menu is amazing value for money. It would be good to have an explanation of the dishes as they are served, as i have normally experienced in michelin starred restaurants. Only small complaint is that the toilets were very cold and there was no hot water from the tap.
A really good meal. Atmosphere was good and the service excellent. Only one disappointment, we couldn’t have hot milk with our coffee as the espresso machine was broken. Seems strange, what is wrong with putting a saucepan on like normal households do, or heat in the microwave!
Excellent food, knowledgeable staff and lovely setting
My wife and I haven't been here for a number of years due to it being dated and cramped. The new refurbished restaurant under the new owners is amazing. Fresh and light with muted greys and interesting decor. The food itself was brilliant, the beef was particularly good, perfectly pink and each accompanying veg was individual in flavour with bacon in the cabbage, star anise in the carrot I think and the potatoes crispy. A great Sunday lunch and worth every penny. The starters could be challenging in their flavours for some but if you're going to try something new this is the place to do it. Desserts were delicious too.
The staff were attentive and smiling, which sounds odd to say but a lot of places look like they've hired the walking dead who would rather be anywhere else on a Sunday. Looks like a great team. We will certainly be back soon. Thankyou.
Excellent food - delicious Sunday lunch. Staff were the right side of attentive and very friendly. General atmosphere was very pleasant. Not a bit stuffy which some Michelin starred establishments can be. Two friends have booked meals on my recommendation!
All food was outstanding
Service was a little less accomplished but friendly: water wasn’t poured for us after the first glass
Very attentive staff, with very good food and very good service
Excellent Sunday lunch at a reasonable price for the quality. Well-spaced tables, so noise not a problem. Mackerel starter was particularly memorable and lamb was melt-in-the-mouth tender.
We had another fabulous Sunday lunch at the Angel. It is incredible value for such high quality dining
We returned to the Angel after a couple of years absence, fully aware of the renovations since the New Management took over.
Everything was as we would have wanted, we where greeted with a friendly and efficient welcome and
despite being a few minutes early immediately shown to our table.
We ordered pre meal drinks whilst perusing the menu, the food was excellent the service could not be faulted and the total experience could not be bettered as you probably would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant.
We had a discussion with the receptionist/restaurant manager about the future planned intentions of the management and were suitable impressed.
We will certainly recommend the Angel at Hetton to friend not only in Yorkshire but further afield.
Lovely food and great service to match! I personally felt that desserts could have a bit more flavour but starters and main course were 10/10
We really enjoyed the tasting menu and the wines to go with it. Amazing place will visit again!
Stunning food, excellent service and great value! Worth travelling for, will be back!
Stunning food, beautiful setting and professional and friendly service. Yorkshire’s best restaurant.
really nice place to go for lunch we will try staying & having dinner next time .
Excellent welcome and the bar area is fully accessible for me as a wheelchair user and we can take the dog too. Very attractively prepared and extremely tasty food. A good selection of wines by the glass too.
This restaurant just gets better. Congratulations to the chef for outstanding food and the staff for the great service
The most beautiful food
Lovely day, lovely place ,lovely staff and meal the whole experience was fantastic
Will definitely return
I took my girlfriend friend for a lunch treat. We knew it wouldn’t be cheap but the meal was superb. We chose a mixture of set menu and a la carte dishes. Portion sizes are small but flavoursome and plenty for lunch. Altogether it was an excellent dining experience and I will certainly be dining there again.
We enjoyed a fabulous Sunday luncheon at The Angel with our niece and husband. The service was attentive, always there when you wanted them to be there. The quality of the various courses was excellent, innovative and appealingly challenging your taste buds. Our niece is vegan and gluten free and she enthused about the variety of choice she was given on a special menu and she qualified her luncheon as one of the best she had ever had. I wholeheartedly recommend The Angel and my wife and I will be back soon. Joost Kuurman
Beautiful food and impeccable service.
It's getting better, a little disappointed with the Lobster starter; lacked a little taste and very small portion. The steak main course was very good.
Wow, what a fantastic restaurant from the staff to the food everything was just perfect. Can't wait to return.
The lunch was delicious and beautiful but portions were too small. We are aware of fine dining norms but personally feel the description of the dish leads you to expect more.
Stunning food and fab service. Already booked our return visit
A very enjoyable dining experience. Pleasant surroundings and attentive but unobtrusive service. The food we ate from the Sunday lunch menu was excellent in every respect.
Great lunch, excellent food. The lunchtime set menu was very good value. We thought the service was particularly good. We will be back!
I had been looking forward to visiting The Angel at Hetton as I'd had the pleasure of sampling Michael Wignall's menu when he had been at Gidleigh Park. That meal had been one of my favourite ever. When I arrived I was delighted to be greeted by some of the lovely staff that had served me at Gidleigh Park and they actually recognised me which was nice. I had planned to go with the ALC but on seeing the taster menu I had no choice but to opt for this as it sounded amazing with a couple of menu items that reminded me of Michael's menu from Gidleigh. I was not disappointed, dishes were all beautifully presented, perfectly balanced and portions were ideal. Highlights were the celeriac with hen of the woods and the optional extra course 'ox meadow' which was a beautiful light espuma flavoured with Mrs Kirkhams Cheshire cheese with a rich onion puree and cubes of salty ox tongue lurking in the cheesy depths, fantastic dish! The place was a pleasant dining area and service was really friendly, some dishes being served by a knowledgeable chef. All in all as good as I hoped it would be. Thanks to all ! I will be back!
What a lovely meal we had. Yes it is pricey but in terms of the food quality, originality and presentation, combined with great service skills from a delightful front of house team made it a night to remember. We will be back.
Birthday. Fab service. Quick service. Great staff and venue.
Overall this was a very overpriced restaurant. The portions were extremely small- there were only 3 very small pieces of lobster for a starter which cost £20. The main course of turbot cost £30 and also only had extremely small pieces of fish - the same with the fillet of beef. The taste of the food was overall very good though the beef was not a patch on the beef served by the previous owner both in quality, texture or taste.
The decor is a dismal grey and the atmosphere non existent.
Such a disappointment!
Service & atmosphere very good indeed, the food was perfect in everyway.
£12 for a glass of wine I thought was very expensive, that is the only negative, I would highly recommend the Angel.
Keep up the good work!!!!
Excellent meal, wonderful food, beautifully presented. Would definitely recommend. I especially appreciated the gushing ‘welcome back’ after I had visited the gents!
