I had the bouillabaisse pot pie, enthusiastically recommended by my server. It was good, but not exceptional. The veggies were small and cubed, like you might buy in a frozen pack. The seafood was small and minimal—bay scallops and small shrimps. With the phyllo draped over the top, the overall effect is better than a Banquet or Swanson pot pie, but not much. The most disappointing aspect was that it was served in a bowl that couldn’t have been much more than 12 ounces—hardly enough for a dinner. My server might have warned me about the small portion, since it was the only thing I ordered. Had I paid $12 for this entree, I would have been disappointed, but I paid $29! At that price, I would have expected the pie to contain jumbo shrimp, sea scallops, and other choice seafood delights, served in a larger portion. My wife had the trout sandwich, which, again, was lauded as “the best thing on the menu” by our server. It was just OK. We won’t be back.
We stopped in for a lite bite after the theater. After finding that the were out of the Trout BLT sandwich, I ordered the fish and chips. I was very disappointed. The fish was heavily battered with very little fish inside. I tried to separate the batter from the fish, and there was just not much fish there. For a restaurant as nice as the Anchor and with the prices they charge, I would have expected much better. It was more like what one might expect at a fast food restaurant. To the waiter's credit, he did not charge us for the fish and chips.
Everything we have had at The Anchor has always been good. We would come more often if they took reservations for the outdoor patio—dumb idea not too!
Being seated at the same bench table as 4 others takes away from the experience
Was not the Anchor of old. Fish was try and lacked flavor. We all the great options in the area it's odd that Anchor seems to have let quality drop.
As always our dining experience was excellent! The food and service was fantastic!
Oysters were phenomenal. Nice cocktail and wine options, but they couldn't make my dinner mate an amaretto sour, since it wasn't on the menu. My other friend didn't love her lobster roll - described it as "a little rubbery." Patio seating on a gorgeous night was great, but it had a faint odor of the sewer. Definitely worth another try, but this time I'll be sitting inside on a Wednesday dollar oyster night.
Lovely patio on a gorgeous night, nice view of Washington Park and Music Hall. Food was mediocre, we had the roasted beet( a sub for the Brussels sprouts of which they were out), and hush puppy appetizer , and both had the fish and chips- meh. May return for a drink on the patio, but will dine elsewhere.
This was my second visit, I was disappointed with the amount of food and drink they were out of. The drinks provided were very underwhelming. We were a party of three and were placed at a shared booth table with a second couple, this made for an awkward situation.
Came for the oyster selection!!! Amazing as always..
We were told by several people that this was a must-try in OTR. We were really disappointed. We waited almost 15 minutes for a table despite our reservation, and they might have been at 50% capacity. The menu is very small (they do have a large variety of oysters) but they were out of two of the main dishes, which were the best two options in my opinion. I ended up with the fish and chips. It was mostly breading so I didn't care for the fish, but the fries were excellent. We will probably not go back as there are way too many other options in that area. I think it was very overrated.
Overall was a good experience tough they were out of many items on the menu due to the Taste of Over The Rhine.
Loved it. Great menu. Plenty of traditional seafood options, and enough new stuff.
Love this place! We came for oyster mania and it did not disappoint everything was amazing! We will be back soon!
I've been to Anchor OTR more times than I can count. It's a lovely place to take friends, especially for Oyster Mania ($1 Delaware Bays). The prices are a bit high for the portions, but the quality is always exceptional. They have a lovely cocktail list, amazing dirty vodka martinis and their outdoor seating is beautiful.
The clam chowder was excellent! The lobster roll was filled with chunks of lobster - will return but definitely will order the fish of the day!
We loved the starters- the crawfish beignets were awesome light and flavorful. The crab cakes had whole lumps of crab and its flavor was not the usual you can get anywhere. The star was the octopus which frankly was large enough to be an entree it self. The salad and potatoes/tomatoes that went with it were so well seasoned!
However the entreees were disappointing. The fish and chips was a rip off- there were 3 small battered fish chunks that could have been better placed in a fried fish taco. We also had the fish fillet in a ciabatta. That was ok but both dishes were a let down given how good the starters were.
The service was great but everything else was average or below. The fish in the fish and chips was dry and tough and the molten lava cake really didn't have anything molten. It was just dense chocolate cake with a dime size slightly gooey center. I booked the table specifying an outdoor table for my mom's birthday. We were taken to an inside table and had to ask to be moved and no one mentioned her birthday. The menu is limited but not special and the prices are high for so-so food. This was a one and done experience.
Wonderful service and great food!
Tried 4 things off the menu. Everything was so good. Great atmosphere, location, staff, and food.
I've been to the Anchor several times, the food and service is always great.
Amazing lobster roll
Great service and server was knowledgeable...short menu and all about seafood...the octopus was superbly cooked, the special of the day was a seared fluke...probably overcooked to our taste...great hand cut French fries...the dessert was disappointing...the salt caramel pudding was not smooth and lacked flavoring
unfortunately we won't be back. They asked if we would want to sit outside. Instead of putting us on their patio, which had plenty of space, 4 adults were seated at a small table along the wall outside. We were crammed next to another table. It took 5 minutes just to get a glass of water. Drinks were another 10 minute wait. Prosecco was warm and flat - both glasses. Food was all overcooked, including the "fresh" fish. Very small menu.
Great oysters, terrible service.
Our clueless waiter forgot half our order.
Good if you have lots of time and are patient with dunces
Never had a bad meal here. One of the best restaurants in town. Cool without being pretentious. They focus on the right things.
fantastic seafood -- oysters and octopus a must!
great menu to try multiple different entrees and or just split appetizers -- cannot recommend enough as a destination for fresh and delicious seafood options out of the ordinary offerings.
Octopus and lobster roll were great, service and outdoor patio awesome
Second time we have dined at The Anchor. Enjoyed both times. Great place for seafood lovers. Food delicious and presented nicely. Service great. Have not eaten outside but plan to in the future.
The food was amazing. The menu is small but everything was delicious, prepared well and the server had excellent recommendations and knew his way around the menu and how the food was prepared. We will definitely be returning!
Great food, amazing and attentive staff. Would definitely recommend.
Great service - delicious food! Will go back for sure.
This was our 4th visit to The Anchor. The first two were great experiences. The last two have left us planning not to return. The last two entrees were not good. The drinks and appetizers were very good and we should have stopped at that.
We love the OTR area but this visit will be our last to The Anchor.
Our bill was shocking compared to comparable to other places we frequent.
Good and service were outstanding!
Oyster lovers were rewarded with a great selection. Crab cakes & deviled eggs made the non oyster lovers Happy! Great menu will be back to tray more!
Trout BLT was great, Oyster too!
Service and evening were great
I must admit I was a bit disappointed. Overall, the food was good but the menu very limited. In addition to being limited, several of the choices were unavailable. My colleague had a difficult time even finding anything that suited her taste. I had the fish of the day which was good. Just nothing I would probably return for. Server was sweet but admitted she had just started. Therefore we had to wait for everything and ask for drinks, etc.
Great outdoor patio and yummy food most of the time, but it can be inconsistent. Also, I hate when servers let you spend so long picking out your food only to THEN tell you they are out of things...it would be so much more polite to tell us upfront! They were out of A LOT for a Saturday night including two of the dishes we came for specifically, bummer!
Wow. Great, fresh tasting oysters. Really liked the waiter. He was knowledgeable but didn’t make us feel like dipshits when we asked questions. Really good drinks. My wife loved the Bloody Mary with a ridiculous sized piece of sea lobster attached. Kind of pricey for me to dine weekly but I would go monthly if I lived closer (in town for some cracker concert...Isbell or something).
Absolutely wonderful as always. Great, creative food and unique environment. One of my favorite places. I just wish they were open later after a show.
Disappointing dining experience. We went to celebrate a birthday and there was no recognition by the staff, not even a "happy birthday." We ordered 4 small plates to share on the recommendation of our arrogant waiter. Only one of the four was worth eating. The corn filled crab cakes lacked crab meat. They were cold and burnt on the bottom. Cold, rubbery breaded calamari. The waiter never checked on us after the food arrived either. Don't eat here!
