About this restaurant

The Ambrette at Rye restaurant is the sister of the award winning Margate venture of the same name. Situated within the fabulous White Vine House on the High Street, The Ambrette at Rye provides a beautiful setting for any dining occasion, the grand Georgian frontage leading in to a light-filled bright and spacious wood-panelled dining room painted in white and hung with contemporary art prints. Priding themselves on a very high level of service, The Ambrette’s staff are not only friendly and professional but well turned out, an ideal partner to the fine cuisine of Head Chef Dev Biswal. Taking traditional recipes from India and breathing new life in to them with brand new creative ideas, Dev’s kitchen provides a unique dining experience blending East and West and using quality ingredients sourced ethically both locally and internationally. Vegetarians are very well catered for at The Ambrette while the wine list includes a good collection of both affordable and luxury wines.

Outstanding and unusual food - a UK-French trained chef of Indian origin, merging the two traditions to wonderful effect. Brilliant!

A real restaurant for foodies - fresh modern takes on the Indian genre. Very inventive dishes, beautifully presented and great flavours. It was a nice touch to have complimentary pre-starters and palate cleansers between dishes. My wife and I were in no rush, but even so, the service was very slow! The staff were very apologetic and took some money off the bill. But it shouldn't take 3 hours to serve a table for two! Value-wise; our bill (without the discounts) for 3 courses and a low-end wine would have been around £120. So not every-day dining, but a good special occasion if you aren't in a rush!

Well cooked inventive flavoursome food...attentive service by young staff. Will be going again and look forward to trying their other restaurants.

Just to let you all know our experience at the ambrette on this particular evening was pretty dreadful. I have written direct to the owner of the ambrette and to date have not even had an acknowledgement or reply. I have now re-sent the letter requesting at least some response form them regarding our dining experience. This was overall very disappointing. We booked Asia group of eight friends and our friend who booked this has let me respond for us all.

My husband and I were in Rye for the weekend celebrating our first wedding anniversary and had read about The Ambrette so decided to give it a go. We were not disappointed. We often do tasting menus and have had mixed experiences but decided to do the tasting menu here. It was worth every penny! The food is imaginative and flavorful. The 6-course tasting menu (which was more like 9 courses) consisted of dosai, soft-shell crab, pigeon, fish, venison and a chocolate dessert. Every single dish was a 10 our of 10. In addition to this, we also received a welcome cocktail, a samosa amuse bouche, soup and a palate cleanser. You will not leave hungry. If I had to pick a favorite, I think the soft-shell crab was outstanding. But, again it was all incredbible. The pigeon and venison were cooked perfectly. The fish was delicate and not overwhelmed by the complex flavor. It was truly a special meal. The service was also quite good. There was a mix up and they forgot to bring out our venison course but when we told them they immediately brought it out. The restaurant was getting quite packed at that point so it was understandable. I would highly recommend The Ambrette and look forward to visiting again!

We had such a brilliant meal on 13th that we went back the very next evening to try out some more of the menu. It was equally good, and we were again seriously impressed by the flavours and interesting locally sourced ingredients. The service was attentive and unhurried, and we will definitely be returning when we are next in Rye (or Margate).

Tried the new lunch time Spring tasting menu. Each course complemented the previous. Will go again and have the tasting menu.

We have been to The Ambrette in Rye before, in the old premises and enjoyed it, and this occasion in the new location exceeded our expectations. The food was brilliantly well-cooked and the flavours outstanding. The complimentary cocktail, pre-starter and other intermediate goodies were wonderful - it was all so good that we went back for a repeat performance on the second night of our stay in Rye. (We've also been in the Margate restaurant and it's just as good). The combination of amazing cooking and locally sourced ingredients is utterly unique.

We visted The Ambrette for my wife's 40th birthday on the recommendation of my parents. We opted for the tasting menu which showcased local produced prepared and served with heavy influences from India. Particular highlights on the night included the wood pigeon and the venison, plus the popping candy granita hit the spot and added novelty value. The restaurant itself had a nice feel about it and the staff were friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. We will certainly be back.

This was an outstanding dining experience in which the dishes were exquisitely presented and the timing between each was perfect for savouring the flavours. We opted for the vegetable main dishes and these involved adventurous combinations of okra, cauliflower, goats cheese and quinoa. We had a side of local sea vegetable which was a perfect accompaniment. The spices were fresh and authentic. The complimentary dishes of soup and seered beef were a lovely surprise and added to the feeling of the meal as an artwork. Both deserts were delicious, combining pear crumble with masala chai custard and a delicate wild rose creme brûlée. An excellent choice and range of wine. The restaurant environment is elegant, light and relaxing. The staff are friendly and we didn't feel rushed. We will definitely be back next time we visit Rye.
