From the warm greeting as we entered the Alcove to the very capable and helpful wait staff to the beautifully prepared meal, our evening meal was exceptional.
We absolutely enjoyed our evening. I jut wish the menu had more variety so that it could become a go to restaurant for dinner.
First time! Dinner before a concert. Server was aware that we needed to be in and out for the show. Excellent steaks, drinks and desserts. Plan 2 hours for whole experience! Beautiful decor. Traveled from Columbus. We also heard about the dinner/play option the restaurant offers, which is located on the second floor, so we will be back.
We had dinner on a very busy night. The service was great and the staff very attentive despite how busy it was. We eat here often and the food is always good but this night, impeccable! Please never leave Mt. Vernon, we love this place!
The alcove restaurant far exceeded my expectations. The food was delicious and well presented. I would certainly go again.
It was wonderful. We will definitely be back again and again. Our friends from out of town thoroughly enjoyed it!! As did we.
The real reason to experience the Alcove is for the food, which is prepared exquisitely! Best restaurant in a town whose options are limited to fast food and/or mediocre chains. Ambiance is "average;" service relies on persons who seem to be working while in school or holding on to other part-time employment, all of whom appear eager to please and seem competent. Wish the menu contained a bit more variety and/or changed with greater frequency; but the food offered compares favorably with any top-star restaurant nation-wide.
We had made reservations (for 7:00 PM) because we wanted to impress our out of state friends, who were visiting, with a great dinner. We had a short wait before being seated, which was okay. As we sat down at our table we were greeted by our waitress, who asked if it was a special occasion that we were celebrating. I responded that we had out of town guests and that we were honoring my wife's birthday as well. "Oh, okay. She will get a free dessert", was the reply. We gave our orders prior to 7:25. At 8:50 our food started to arrive. The two baked potatoes, that were ordered, were not warm enough to melt the butter, in fact they were cold. The chicken that came was dry. And, the grilled cheese sandwich that arrived did not have the tomato on it as it had been ordered. Four people, four dinners, not one was up to the standard that we expected from your kitchen.
We were not charged for the tomato-less cheese sandwich and $10.00 was removed for each of the cold baked potatoes. Upon hearing our plight, we were told that along with the reduction of our bill as indicated above, that our desserts would be free of charge as well. When the bill arrived they were not, not even the birthday girl's was free.
Needless to say, we were very embarrassed, and very unhappy with the experience. Impressed?? They were not; we were not. Un-impressed, very!
Best French onion soup ever, consistently.
We enjoyed the food. It was very good. My wife and I were with our Grandson and we were able to visit with him comfortably. We will return
We were put in a closed area for our six and it was great to have my 76th birthday dinner with family. The service was outstanding and my scallops were delicious. Thank you for the friendly atmosphere that wanted to make our evening pleasant. Thank you Amanda for being such a great waitress!
We have dined at the Alcove often in the past five years since moving to Granville. Last Saturday evening our experience was much below our typical experience. Our waitress was not very welcoming, her service was "short and abrupt." We waited beyond a reasonable time for our meals and my chopped steak was beyond well done when I had requested medium rare. Our party of 4 was disappointed as the Alcove has been our reliable "go to" restaurant for many years.
The Alcove is one of my FAVORITE places to dine. As a host here as well, I can tell you that the staff is top-notch which matches the equally fantastic food! There isn't a thing on the menu that I wouldn't recommend! It's a setting that you would find in NYC, but lucky for us it's nestled on the Main Street of Mt. Vernon, OH. If I could eat here every day I would. They offer lovely seating arrangements from the bar with it's own private "Library" to the signature "Alcove" seating in the middle of the restaurant all the way to the back where 2 large glass "Private Dining Rooms" are located (those signature locations book quickly, so call ahead to reserve them...well all except for the Library, it's first-come, first-serve!). The design is gorgeous. It alone is worth the visit! Take my word for it, you want to make a point to come to The Alcove for lunch or dinner, and who knows, maybe I'll seat you! :)
The salmon was undercooked to my taste however I am very very picky about sea food being not WELL done. All in all it was fabulous
It was New Years Eve when we dined. Service was great as usual. We both had the scallops with risotto when I have had in the past. They were cooked perfectly but the risotto was undercooked which was disappointing. Otherwise everything was perfect
This was my first time at this restaurant. The ambiance is quite nice and upscale. The staff from the hostess to the coat check to the wait staff are all very well trained and provided excellent service. The food was only very average. I ordered a filet mignon medium and it was overdone, much closer to medium well. We had caesar salads which were average in the quality of the lettuce to the taste of the dressing. The dinner rolls were not particularly good and did not taste fresh baked. For $96 before tip for two people with no alcoholic beverages I expect a much higher quality of food. I have had better meals ordering very similar items at your middle of the road chain restaurant. All in all we were disappointed having planned a special New Year's Eve dinner at this restaurant. I realize holidays can be super busy but we dined at a very early 5:15 and the restaurant had many open tables so I don't think that was the issue.
Good find for lunch in an area where there aren’t that many options for excellent, white table cloth restaurants. The service was excellent, restaurant beautiful and fairly busy. A little pricey but they are apparently striving to be the best in the area and probably are succeeding!
A lovely restaurant for lunch or dinner with very good food.
Great experience. Wonderfully prepared food, terrific atmosphere, very friendly staff, Columbus worthy meal without the high prices. We had filet, prime rib, scallops and chicken between four of us for $150.00. Each dish was excellent. You won’t be disappointed.
We had a wonderful, fun experience celebrating our 40th anniversary. Drinks were excellent and food was awesome. We will consider eating here before driving to Columbus.
Main dish took a long time to come out, other than that it was good
We had a delicious meal in elegant surroundings - plush booth seats, brocaded walls. The service was attentive without being intrusive. We are looking forward to eating here again.
We were have our annual Christmas dinner. We decided we wanted to try a different restaurant. We had never been to the Alcove. The food was excellent and we could talk and not feel rushed. I’ve already recommended it to friends.
By far the most outstanding meal I have had in years. I ordered a French Onion Soup with Alcove salad, Filet and Bakes Potato. My wife had the same except a Caesar salad. We shared apple dumpling and creme brulee dessert. The steak was perfectly done, juicy without drainage on plate. Tender enough to cut with a fork. There was not a single item that was not delicious and perfect with outstanding pleasant and courteous staff.
It was just okay for us. Not worth the drive from Columbus. The Prime Rib really tasted and looked like it was a precut packaged piece heated up...(not freshly roasted for sure) Waitress never smiled and after we waited some time for cocktails, (and we asked first if carry Southern Comfort) she came back to say you didn't have it. Coffee was gray and horrible even after I got a fresh cup.
Menu did not seem very creative or anything outstanding and no specials?
Too bad because the atmosphere is wonderful. Maybe we'll try the bar and lunch sometime.
We were there for a Christmas celebration with friends. As usual the food was fabulous, service and drinks were great. A fun and relaxing evening. Very slow paced which is what we wanted. Thank you! We love that a lot of the staff remembers us and stops by our table to say hello. Particularly love the Mom and daughter servers. Can never remember their names, but they are so nice.
Excellent experience, The food was perfect, our server was totally on top of her game.
The prime rib is some of the best I've had!! Consistently amazing!!
Casey was a wonderful server and Rhonda is a wonderful hostess.
From 40 minutes drive. Friends from Marion.
Great food and service in a very nice restaurant
As always, we enjoyed ourselves. The food was wonderful and the cocktails excellent! Service was on point!
Had dinner with good friends who had not been there before. They are good, old-fashioned steak and potato lovers. They were not disappointed in their fillets and baked potatoes. Salads were fresh and crisp. Service was excellent despite the server being a novice. Setting is elegant but comfortable. Quiet enough for easy conversation. Really nice restaurant.
The Alcove is a historical downtown Mount Vernon restaurant that combines class and modern convenience with excellent menu options and delightful service.
Excellent food and excellent service. You would never guess you're in Mount Vernon, OH. A fabulous place!
The Alcove is a beautifully decorated restaurant. The servers are well trained and the food is well cooked and attractively presented. I can recommend the scallops and the filet mignon. I love their green beans too! They have something for everyone. My friend was delighted that gluten free rolls and bread are available. Their signature cocktails are creative and refreshing. Well worth the trip for a special occasion or dinner out with friends.
Great food and a nice place for a more upscale dinner experience close to home!
Great place to celebrate our anniversary. The prime rib was excellent. Will definatly return when I am in the area
The Alcove has really improved since its remodel. The ambiance is very nice, They quality of the food is up. The service has always been friendly, if not always as attentive and subtle as one would prefer. The menu is pretty limited with mostly traditional meat and fish entrees. I usually order the 6 oz. filet which is very tender and well prepared. Still, it has regained its place as the top restaurant in Mount Vernon which it lost twenty five years ago to a strip mall Chinese place.
We enjoyed dinner very much, including excellent soups, salads, and entrees. However, the menu on a Tuesday evening was not adventurous or very extensive. We were hosting a cherished visitor from out of state and would have liked a little more offering of local pork. The staff were hospitable and attentive and provided excellent service.
