Lovely room and (mostly) kind staff. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow, even though the room was only half full on a Saturday night. A full 55 minutes between ordering the entree and it being served. The flavors of the foods were great. BUT, the tenderloin ordered medium was served raw; and, the duck breast was so overcooked it was hardly edible. Too bad as the sauces and accompaniments were great. We will try it again and hope that the kitchen is better run next time.

Food was phenomenal.
Waiter was not welcoming or friendly for first half of dinner, but was better later. Did not introduce himself or smile. Felt like we were trying way too hard to get a positive reaction. All the waiters seemed stressed. Service was slow to get us our drinks, and then to place appetizer order.
But everything we had was absolutely delicious.
Would return and recommend.

It's my favorite restaurant in Evanston! It's a hidden gem. The restaurant is under a train track, which I think adds a character to it. It's small but charming. The interior is sleek and comfortable. We ordered 9 dishes including 3 desserts among 4 of us, and everything was delicious! Chef/owner Jose Romero came out to say hi. He is from El Salvador. He is very nice and down-to-earth. We will definitely go back.

Shocked to walk into a full house on a weekday evening! Virtually all seats were full of happy people. That meant service was slowed down, but not dramatically, and the noise level was higher than usual. That said, the food was exceptional, as usual, and served by savvy and attentive if rushed staff. Wondering if this was unusual or if the world really has decided to eat out again. One of our top three restaurants.

We are regulars at this place, since the old days when it was Chef's Station. Probably eaten there 25 times over many years. We always love the quiet ambiance and the excellent, if unchanging menu. We were pleasantly surprised by the renovations. But the food has gone downhill. The portions are ridiculously small, especially for the appetizers. Three pieces of Octopus and three small bites of foie gras! The soup was lukewarm. Entrees were ok, but this is definitely not the quality of food we are used to. I wonder if the chef has changed. We won't be back. Very sad to cross Alcove off our list, as fine dining options in Evanston are very limited.

The food is excellent. The service was perfunctory and ambiance was fine - no music or candles (at least nothing that made an impression). We were there for our anniversary- and noted that in our reservation- but there was no acknowledgement. Cocktail offerings are wanting. Would be nice to see some local distillers/brewers - but the liquor all seemed to be well. We ordered champagne. They brought the wrong one, and it wasn’t chilled.

First, Happy Anniversary. Our team extends our deepest apologies that this special day was not the best experience as one would look forward to on a special occasion. If you choose to return, it would be our honor to provide you and a guest complimentary cocktails on the house. We are looking into working with local brewers. We have had FEW whiskey cocktails in the past, and looking forward to future collaborations with them again.

I hate to give service a 2-3 star because I don’t think the incredible slowness of the food preparation was our servers fault. We got there at 7:30 and at 9:30 we still did not have our main courses. We only ordered salad and mains. The food came out ridiculously slow. The food was good but after waiting that long, the food would have had to be spectacular to save the restaurant in my eyes. It was a solid 3 experience and at that price we won’t be back. There are too many other restaurants in that price range that deliver the experience you expect at that price.

Excellent Food. However, if you enter via the train station alcove on Maple, it is a dark area and there were some gang bangers there stoned out of their minds. they approached the car and followed the couple we met, to the restaurant. It seems there is an entrance on the other side and I would suggest using that if you see the wrong crowd in front. Called police and when finished dinner, they were gone but owner says a constant problem. Would not return soon because of that problem

Good food, good service, nice room. It’s nice to be in a restaurant where I can hear myself think, let alone my dining companion talk. Oddly, I ordered an Old Fashion that was flavorless, so I can’t vouch for the bar when it comes to mixed drinks.

The service was pleasant and professional. The food was really excellent. The portions were small for the price point, in my opinion. For example, a halibut entree included an approximately 3 oz. piece of fish for $42.00. To be fait, the dish was accompanies by a few pieces of lobster ravioli and a delicious saffron sauce, so every bite was tasty!

A really lovely meal- we loved the renovations from the old Chef's Station space. The mussels were a little dry, and the halibut a touch overcooked (as were the shrimp that came with it), and it's clear that they're a bit understaffed (which might have something to do with the food being a little off center). But my duck was lovely, as was the goat cheese tart, and the wine was really nice as well. It was a nice relaxing evening.

This was one of the best overall meals I've had. Every food item from appetizer to entree and dessert was amazing. Getting to the restaurant was a walk through an old viaduct, which made me wonder what it would be like. However once inside, the restaurant's decor was very elegant. Great for a date night or simply to enjoy a great meal.

This was our second visit to alcove. I had ordered the hell a bit prior and although the meal was excellent the serving size was 1/3 what I had prior. The wine took forever to be delivered and opened and it’s at room temperature rather than slightly chilled.
They clearly need more folks to help in the dining room because they are short staffed. We also we’re celebrating a very special birthday with our close friend and normally you would bring a piece of cake with a candle etc. the server did not listen well. That was disappointing. I do not believe we will be returning to alcove

This was the first time my friend and I ate at The Alcove. We ate at Chef's Station before and liked their food. But, we think the food at The Alcove is exceptional. I had a drink before dinner - the German Riesling which tasted very good. We shared the Lamb Meatball appetizer which we thought was the best we've ever had. We shared two entrees - the Rack of Lamb and the Halibut. Both were excellent. For dessert we shared the Peach Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream. This was also really good. We can't forget our server who was very personable and knowledgeable about the menu. Everything was served in a timely fashion. We never felt rushed. We will definitely come back to The Alcove for dinner. This is an excellent restaurant in Evanston. You are missing a great dinner if you don't go to The Alcove.

I'm so glad that Alcove has survived COVID. I was a big fan of the restaurant when it was Chef's Station. The food continues to be inventive and beautifully presented. I had the halibut in a saffron beurre blanc. It was delicious. My friend raved about her pork tenderloin. The two women who joined me had never been to either Chef's Station or Alcove. They both enjoyed the restaurant immensely, so we'll be returning in a few weeks to celebrate another birthday. I think this is THE best fine dining restaurant in or around Evanston. If you want a setting that is quiet, elegant and visually beautiful, this is the place.

The food is incredible. Chef obviously utilizes the farm to table concept. Great use of seasonal items. Honestly, every dish was great but two standouts were the Halibut with Maine Lobster Tortellini and the Tuna Tartare with Ginger and scallions. Our table of 6 ordered a wide variety of starters and entrees and every dish was beautiful to look at at perfectly executed. And, if they have the Grand Marnier souffle for dessert, don't miss it. The room is beautiful too. Contemporary, but warm and inviting. Elegant without being fussy. Service is informed and professional. I honestly think this has to be one of the best restaurants in Evanston, if not the best. And rivals anything in Chicago. We can't wait to go again and try every one of the dishes!

Nice ambiance – indoor/outdoor dining. Quiet, Clean & soft music playing. Good drinks/food/service. We began our meal with our usual cocktails & then shared the Goat Cheese Beet Salad. For our dinner: Both had the Lamb Chops. When were you served a Sorbet to cleanse your palate after waiting for the next course ? They do that here.

We've loved this dining gem since it was "Chefs Station". As always, every portion of our meal was outstanding. Although the menu offers a plethora of delicious options, I enjoyed the Tuna Tartare as an appetizer with the Duck for my entree.
