The Admiral Ratings and Reviews
Best food we have had when eating out in a long time. Appetizer of fried oysters in cornmeal batter delicious. Cocktail was great- can’t remember name of drink , but was first drink listed on menu. Got ribeyes as entrees and perfectly cooked Brasstown beef. Portions large- no room for dessert, but will try next time !!
My husband and I and our two teenaged kids went to dinner for my birthday. We had a reservation for a Tuesday at 7. We ordered four entrees and 2 small plates and sort of shared everything. The Rib eye with a simple demi glace was tender and perfectly cooked and the potato gratin with mornay sauce went perfectly with it. The seared duck breast with a warm lentil salad was very tender and the salad was succulent and subtle. The Bouillabaisse had very delicious fish but the sauce was oddly unbalanced and a bit like red pepper coulis rather than a broth and the potatoes were cold as if they had been precooked and added in at the last moment. The pork chop was beautifully seared and succulent on a bed of delicious creamy polenta -- however the apple cider vinegar kimchi sauce was simply sour and not very complex and the Brussels sprouts were undercooked and bland for my taste. The small plates were both amazing: seared scallops with mixed sautéed wild mushrooms was to die for, and the braised short ribs with turnip purée was pure heaven -- just yummy! These small plates are also very decent portions for a small entrée. We had three desserts and all were exceptional -- dark chocolate torte with cherry ice cream and a raspberry puree was amazing, the crème caramel was the best pudding I've had in a long time and went extraordinarily well with simple fresh berries although I didn't expect it to?-- the salted Oreo ice cream with cacao nibs sounded terrible but was delicious! We drank homemade sodas from the bar which were delicious and went well with the food and kids had fresh brewed herbal tea which was perfect. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and competent and very on it without ever seeming overbearing. A wonderful evening and next time we'd like to try more appetizers and small plates.
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Admiral. The food was amazing and our server was very kind and helpful. The owner personally met with us to ensure that we were enjoying ourselves. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to those visiting the Asheville area!!
This was my second time eating at The Admiral. The food was excellent, however the service was sub par. Our waitress was not very friendly and half way through the meal she seemed to disappear and another waitress started coming by our table. We asked questions about certain things and were given unhelpful answers with a "don't bother me" tone. I am not someone who reviews frequently, but I think such an amazing culinary experience should come with excellent service. A little disappointed this trip.
This particular time, when we ordered the broccoli and blue cheese 'fondue,' it was a huge disappointment, a disappointment I have never had in my endless dining experiences at The Admiral. I mentioned to our server the overcooked broccoli, and asked about the fondue in the title. Oooops...she explained there was supposed to be a side of blue cheese. OK, she had stopped by or walked past us numerous times, and never noticed we were shorted the main feature of the broccoli dish? Not good oversight, and truthfully, even though I have waited tables, I cannot say whether this was the kitchen or the server. So I'll just lay it on management.
Fantastic! Arugala salad delicious-light dressing/Granny Smith apples. Warm beer salad-pomegranate reduction/baby bok choy-yummy. Cheese board-very good! Scallop small Plate with Lion Mane mushrooms and polenta-really beautiful dish. Bouillabaisse-spot on! Drinks-Dark and Stormy's -best around!! Always a great experience!
We we're in Asheville for a long weekend to experience the food and beauty of the city...the Admiral was on everyones list of must experience restaurants and they did not disappoint. From the cheese and meat tray with a great mix of jams and crunchy bread to the amazing quail and sweetbreads small plates everything was perfectly cooked and full of complex flavors. Or service was attentive but not intrusive..I would highly recommend a visit to this West Asheville gem!
We have been going to The Admiral for years. It has been consistent in food quality and service. We frequently share several small plates and the arugula salad. We usually have the same server who is friendly and helpful without being intrusive. I wish there were more non-alcoholic drink options
( interesting virgin cocktails) but have no complaints. It’s our go-to for special occasions in spite of the many restaurants that have come and gone in the last 10 years.
