The pepper steak and tangerine ginger tea were excellent!
The Admiral is a gem in West Asheville. The food was unique (not weird just not at all ordinary) and amazing. The service was great and we loved that it was in walking distance of our AirB&B.
We went here for our honeymoon and it was delicious!!!!!! Highly recommend and the steak was AMAZING.
Our return to The Admiral was disappointing. A server who asked if my husband wanted red wine with mussles in white wine, very mediocre yet expensive wins by the glass, a dessert that included a cookie straight out of the freezer. All at a high price. Don't know what happened but it was not what we were expecting.
Food was bomb. Open kitchen. Cool atmosphere. Changing menu
great food, good service. Cool atmosphere, very unassuming.
We went to the Admiral with high expectations after hearing locals rare about it for the past several years. Unfortunately while the food was excellent, they were sold out of one of their only pasta option by 6:30 in the evening and the service was ambivalent. This is a lovely place, but not up to the hype. Asheville has too many great places to eat to waste timing with poor food timing and service (why does bread arrive moments before entrees and your bottle of wine later still?). Save your visit for a good local meal, but find someplace else for a special occasion or if you are looking for an all around 5-star experience.
Husband loved the food but I found the agnolotti very salty. Staff were great.
The Admiral did not disappoint! Its rough-around-the-edges exterior belies the exceptional cuisine inside, which is part of The Admiral’s appeal. Excellent guidance was given by our server, especially toward the end of our meal. He swung by our table and simply said, “doughnuts”. And, you know what, they were excellent!!
Admiral is now a must go to when in town. Just have to remember to book it a month out. Food was outstanding. We got an early bird reservation last minute 5pm. Didn’t care that’s how good the food is....enjoy
The Admiral has long been a "bucket list" restaurant and I so wanted to love everything about it. Which is not to say that our dining experience was sub par. It wasn't - most of what we had was excellent.
We started with the steak tartar which was heaven - that 64 degree celsius egg, the toasts and accompaniments were the best example of this dish/tasted seen in a long time. We also had salad with strawberry and chevre which was fine but did not wow. The bread in Asheville at any restaurant should not be missed - their bakeries are wonderful and Owl bread served at TA was a perfect example. Loved the herb butter. We had the pork loin and agnolotti - everything was perfectly prepared, great portioning, beautiful representation, technically delicious etc. BUT - not inspiring. Yeah, I know, what does that even mean ?! It means, I don't want to go home and try to make it. Dessert ? Donuts with milk chocolate sauce and brittle - yum to the nth power on that brittle but the donuts were virtually tasteless. Never met a donut I didn't like, but these perfectly fried yeast donuts were meh.
Which leaves service - for someone not in the business, they would have been fine with service. This is not a complaint per se. I think we would have loved to have experienced and seen some passion for the restaurant from staff. They smiled, they got us to our table relatively close to our reservation time they just didn't really engage. All of our food/drinks etc came out at the appropriate times. Part of what makes the south and Asheville specifically hit my sweet spot, is that the people in our industry love what they do and it shows. They truly care about the overall experience. And, while I do think the staff here probably does care, they seemed a bit blase/too cool about everything. That indescribable energy, "you gotta try this" and vibe was missing.
My second time at The Admiral was equally as enjoyable as the first - both times we dined with my favorite cousin and her hubby. The warm owl bread was a warm, yummy starter; loved that it came with both spiced butter and olive oil. Arugula salad was unbeatable! Our various entrees ranged from oysters to red snapper, and all were fantastic! Our server was very attentive but in a pleasant, low key way - rather than injecting her personality into our quiet conversation.
As always the food was delicious. Small plates = large portions. My husband and I split a salad, more than enough for two people. Heather was our waitress and was the best.
So delicious. I can't stop talking about the tartare!!! The local cheeses were also amazing. We ordered the duck breast and it was cooked to perfection. Writing this review 2 days later and I still can't get this meal off my mind.
Delicious food and excellent service. Excellent Old Fashion. My husband’s dish was lacking one ingredient but still good. Overall atmosphere very nice. Employees seem to love their jobs.
Anniversary dinner. The tar tar was incredible. THE FRIED OYSTERS!!!!! We tried several appetizers and small plates
and everything was incredible🤤
We loved it all. Arugula salad is a must! My favorite was the seared trout chowder. She described it as a deconstructed clam chowder so good! We also loved our server Selena!
We had an incredible experience the other night at the Admiral. It was as if we are being welcomed into someone’s home that happened to be a really delicious place to enjoy a birthday meal. The drinks were better than the best and the recommendations from the staff superb.
Loved our food, cocktails, ambiance, and service! There were two of us and we split 2 small plates and 1 entree...it was more than enough to eat for us. I ordered their dark and stormy, which is made with their own homemade ginger beer. Unlike other dark and stormy cocktails, this one was not too sweet and was very well balanced. Loved it! We ordered the deconstructed new england clam chowder with flounder on top...it was our favorite of the night. Rich, but light and tons of flavor. The other small plate we ordered was the house made agnolotti (a pasta stuffed with park) in a pork broth. Delicious and I could have just drank the broth as a drink all night. It was flavorful and velvety. Service was outstanding. And, this place is not snobby or pretentious. There were folks dressed up and folks in jeans, sweaters and baseball hats. We definitely will come again.
Loved the food. Authentic. Unpretentious. Original.
This was our first visit to the Admiral and it was my wives Birthday and each year we try a different local restaurant, this year turned out to be the best ever. It was a great atmosphere and the service was outstanding. Our server was very attentive but didn't keep interrupting as many do. The portions were more than enough and my wife said that her steak was the best she has ever experienced. We were also surprised with a Birthday desert and candle. We look forward to the opportunity to return soon.
Perfect - relaxed meal with excellent service and sublime food.
Trout mousse was excellent. Portions generous for small plates. Good for special occasions or nice dinners.
The Admiral is our favorite restaurant in Asheville, and that's saying a lot! This visit was outstanding........Agnolotti with braised pork, radish, and a heavenly broth, a cheese board first, homemade donuts, wine, and a caipirinha for me. They aren't made well in many restaurants but The Admiral never disappoints. All in all, it was fantastic!!!!!
This place is our favorite go-to for special occasions. Love the smaller size, the changing menu and the service. Never had a less than excellent experience.
We had small plates and cocktails. Everything was magnificent. This is my new favorite restaurant in Asheville. I highly recommend the Admiral.
GREAT FOOD, PATIENT WAITRESS, GOOD WINE, DECOR IS SUPRISING FIXED UP QUITE NICELY, NOT TOO NOISY, CAN EAT OUTSIDE IN WARMER WEATHER
As always everything was outstanding. Fried oysters, tartar, current pasta, mussels!!! Never ever disappointing👍👍👍👍👍
Very good to excellent as usual. The arugula salad never fails to please. The trout chowder and the agnolotti were excellent. The new mussel recipe isn't as good as the old tomato based one but the mussels were plentiful. Service was excellent.
Arugula salad is the best anywhere. Mussels are great. Staff is really attentive and professional.
This is the spot.
We enjoy our trips to the Admiral - and this was no exception. My steak was perfect, and everything I tried from my partner and friends' plates impressed me. Long may the traditional continue – keep up the good work!
Did not disappoint. My husband had beef and said it was the best he had had in a long time. My small plate was outstanding and wished for an entree portion. The wait staff was friendly and very accommodating. Always a good experience. We had friends from the Chicago area and they also enjoyed their meal.
I want to acknowledge the very well informed wait staff. We were gluten free and she confidently informed us of our choices. She was excellent.
The food was uneven. Some dishes were excellent, for example, the smoked trout in clam chowder. Others were not so good. The angolotti (ravioli with pork) was too heavy handed with the flavoring, as was the salad (the dressing was overwhelming). Would have preferred more nuanced flavors. In a misplaced gesture, fresh radishes and butter were sent to our table for our anniversary. Way too much butter. Couldn't eat it. On the other end of the meal, white chocolate with dried strawberries were sent over. And that was delicious, as was the creme brûlée!!
The Admiral was wonderful! We tried a variety of small plates and entrees along with creative cocktails. Everyone was pleased with their choices. Always a foodie adventure!
Probably the best meal we have had since moving to NC; food was creative without being over the top. Tile fish and duck were both excellent. I love places that are super casual, where people can wear jeans or a jacket and serve great food; this is my type of place.
Just a so so meal. We have been many times as we are locals. Ordinarily their menu selections are more inspiring. This time no sweet breads or lamb. But I just found the food to be very average. We had taken a couple of friends who had never been. It's always disappointing when you have talked a place up and then the experience was just so so. Maybe better luck next time. But for 150.00 per couple before tax and tip that is not acceptable. Admiral get back on top of your game please- as we usually like dining there.
If you have to wait when you get there grab a cocktail and sit out on the patio and watch BJs, you will not be disappointed. The food was Amazing. Always go with the suggestions and we have never been disappointed. Tartare and Manhattans are always a great place to start. and yes the portions are just right. Great Service, Great Food, and Great Drinks!!!
