The Admiral Ratings and Reviews
A very special evening. We were a bit early for our reservation so sat at the bar. Great bartender, Mark, made us delicious hand-crafted cocktails. We were seated right on time. Service was excellent, food outstanding and we loved the cozy ambiance. The chef created a delicious vegetarian plate for me with fresh, innovative vegetables seasoned well. Asheville has lots of great restaurants. This is one of them!
The Admiral is no longer what it used to be. The prices have gone way up and the food is not as inventive as it was in its days of glory. Drinks are also expensive. It is living on it's former reputation when it was a fantastic restaurant that was very reasonably priced in a dive bar. It is part of the collateral damage of the gentrification of Asheville.
Have heard good recommendations for The Admiral for years. Visiting friends who had been taken there by locals a few months ago were eager to go again. Very happy to get to try this wonderful restaurant. Food was good and unique. Service was friendly and well timed. Enjoyed the experience and look forward to return trips.
We are locals & this was our first visit, but will return based on a very positive experience. Menu has options incl. small plates. We started with a very good cheese board followed by two different small plates and finished with a Krispy Kreme bread pudding that was great. Good wine list with a range of prices. Service was done in a "team" manner and they were readily accessible and quite responsive. Would definately recommend.
Beautifully well thought out and divinely executed meal. This place is wonderful, warm and a great place to really enjoy masterfully crafted cocktail and locally sourced food. The waitress was so well informed about the food and prep and was so helpful in suggesting pairings. I will return very soon!
The ribeye steak I ordered was tough, comparable to something I could get at Golden Corral. I could have purchased a filet mignon at Outback for much less than $38 and it would have been far better. The accompanying roasted cauliflower was so tough that I had trouble cutting it with a steak knife. I ordered two glasses of wine myself. The first glass was served at room temperature (about 72 degrees) and according to the server, was the last glass out of an open bottle. The scallops that my wife ordered had a funny taste - not sure they were actually scallops. For a fairly expensive night out ($138 including tip for two), I just did not see why this place is so well spoken of. Very ordinary, very limited menu.
A Ribeye 1/2 inch thick costing $6 at Food Lion and served over cooked and been sitting, the steak did not even melt the butter on top. The staff did nothing and charge me for everything. I should have justed walked out. No idea how this place it revered so high.
Our first visit here was overall enjoyable. The food was very good, but a bit overpriced for what you get. The main issue was our server who seemed to have a "chip on his shoulder" and didn't want to engage in any conversation and he seemed like he didn't want to be there. We actually felt bad asking him questions. Sadly, I probably won't go again due to the server but if you get a good one give this place a try!
Farm to Table cuisine gone Lazy. Our Bibb Salad with buttermilk dressing was tasteless and watery - the server admitted that she had had previous complaints on that dish. Thanks a lot ! Companion ordered a broccoli side dish and was brought brussels sprouts. Staff overall seemed aloof. Will not return
We had been given gift certificates as a Christmas present, but realized about 1/2-mile before getting to The Admiral, that the certificates were still at home! It was our anniversary, the reservation was 12-minutes from the missing certificates revelation, so . . . there was no going back!
Lucky us! The Admiral was a delight. Our server was certainly one of the highlights of the evening: a warm, welcoming, friendly person, well versed in the offerings of the restaurant. The food was creatively conceived, gourmet tasty, and the menu featured so many tempting options, that living there and eating three meals a day in the restaurant would be perfect! The outside of the restaurant belies the cozy ambiance inside, where it is easy to have quiet, pleasant conversation, without being overwhelmed by someone's idea of "music." The experience was thoroughly enjoyable, and, coupons or not, we will return many more times. After all, they don't accommodate diners as permanent residents!
Food was flavorful, but for the price, the ribeye was a bit gristly and had no spinalis dorsi (the most flavorful part), and I know brussel sprouts are popular, as is cauliflower, but please have other choices. Service was attentive and genial, and ambiance was pleasant. We were actually able to have a conversation as, at least the night we were there, the noise level was low.
The Admiral is dependable for a splendid meal and excellent service. The menu changes from night to night, but there are always appealing choices. It is always in demand so reservations far in advance of your intended visit are a virtual must, though you can walk in a sit that bar, ordering from the menu.
A cozy unassuming setting belies the range, preparation, and presentation of the menu selections. Plenty of items for casual comfort food lovers and a special treat for more adventurous foodies. Although there is a bar, a look at the other diners spoke of a date night atmosphere...quiet conversations, mostly parties of two and four. Lovely experience. Not our first visit, and the quality is consistent over several dinners.
Unfortunately, The Admiral did not meet our expectations. We ordered one of the local cheeses, Bibb lettuce salad, scallops, lamb and pork belly. Of all the dishes, the cheese with apricot spread, pecans and crostini was the most remarkable. Salad was a bust - rather plain. Scallops, though good, were nothing special. Pork belly was average. The lamb was extremely disappointing. All in all, a decent experience; however, would not return for a second visit.
The Admiral was a nice surprise! Not much to look at from the outside, but nice and cozy ambience on the inside. Nice mix of diners. Service was attentive. Interesting dining options. The food was nicely presented. My only negative was that the scallops I had for dinner were slightly gritty, which happens sometimes. I'm sure the restaurant would have offered me another meal option, but I chose not to comment to the server. All in all, a nice evening.
