The Abbey on Butler Street
We’ve exposed brick walls and wooden ceiling beams, centered one of the largest outdoor seating spaces in the city around a swan fountain, and crowned the coffeehouse with a reclaimed church rose window restored as a chandelier.
We’ve created the Abbey to give a sense of place, the feeling that you’ve discovered something novel, yet close to home. We’ve brought together a coffeehouse, two bars, and a bistro all under a single roof. We're exploring the world of craft - come explore it with us.
We went for Brunch. The menu looked great with many different types and selections. If only the food had lived up to the menu. Omelets over cooked, kitchen was unwilling to make any additions or substitutions that were simple requests. Very mediocre
Great vegan options! The fries with curry were excellent as was the seitan ravioli. And they even had a berry cobbler, but I was too full because the portions are ample! Great ambiance outside by the fountain. Our waitress was great (except she did bring us cheese for the fries when we explicitly said we were vegan and didn't want cheese). Prices were a bit high, but not bad considering portion size. I'll be back!
Loved the atmosphere of the outdoor seating by the fountain. The food was good. We were disappointed as we tried to order 2 different bottles of wine from the menu and, in each case, our server returned and said “sorry we don’t have that one”. We felt that he should have checked on us...instead we had to chase him down. Despite all of that, we would definitely go again!
The Abbey is such a lovely place, I've come a few times. My first, I was a vegetarian and was very happy eating there and my second I enjoyed meatloaf which was delicious. But most recently I took dear friends and family members along and not only did they enjoy it which was my highlight for the evening but for the first time I got to try fresh fried pork rinds... Absolutely insane a must-try!!!! Always a pleasant atmosphere and very pleasant staff. Reservations encouraged!
The horchata latte was wonderful, and always love the breakfast options on the brunch menu!
The four of us had a fantastic time. We enjoyed everything that we ordered, especially the edamame hummus! I would definitely come here again!
Did a girl's brunch, food & service were awesome!
Service was not good. Server was not knowledgeable about menu items. And he had to cover outdoor tables plus indoor, so couldn't attend to us. At one point we had to go searching for appetizer plates ourselves, before the appetizer got cold. Food was fine. It was the service that put a damper on our evening.
Food was very good, service was not. Once food was delivered, waiter disappeared and we had to flag down another waiter to ask our waiter for the check. Once check was presented, no explanation or apology for lack of attention.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday brunch. Portions are generous. The fare is creative. The only frustration, which was very minor to be sure, was that you can swap out the starch, which was a pasta salad, for a regular salad. Our waiter did ask, “would you like to upgrade?” What he didn’t tell us was this “upgrade” would be $3 more dollars. (Odd to charge more for the healthier side dish). Surely tossed greens are not that much more expensive than pasta! Nevertheless, this place is popular and for a good reason, so make a reservation in advance!
This restaurant is very large in capacity; it has too many tables to serve food in a timely manner. Waited for food for over an hour. Food was pretty good but wait was not worth it.
We came during busy brunch hours and received slow service with the priority being the outside patio (not where we were).
Really cool spot. We sat outside on the patio by the fountain. Food, drink, and service were all good. We will be back for sure!
It was a beautiful place! Top notch!
First time at The Abby today for brunch. Nothing but great things to say!! French toast & omelets delicious. Spicy bloody marys awesome 😋
Look forward to our next visit for dinner!
First time there and my husband said we had to come back before our meal was even over.
Out of town company.Seated immediately for reservations. Very accomadating. Service good. Everyone enjoyed meal. Loved the Ambiance.
A bit disappointed-my salad (Pittsburgh)
Was lacking fresh Romain lettuce & the shaved steak not that great. No Zinfandel wine-really?
Food is phenomenal and drinks are strong!! The outside setting is perfect. I don’t even feel like I’m in Pittsburgh setting out there!
Food was decent, menu had plenty of options but our party was hit or miss on if their food was good. Service was very slow and several tables had been sat, eaten and left by the time we got our food. Outside area was nice but we weren’t allow to sit outside with a chance of bad weather even though there was a small chance of rain and plenty of space available inside.
Cool concept, would probably return for happy hour but probably not a meal.
We sat outside, nice atmosphere. The pork rinds are amazing, the rest of the meals were very good, especially the burgers. Our server was outstanding. Love this place!
don't go for Sunday brunch service real slow and eggs were hard when you ask for dippy didn't seam to care but I will try on a week day
Highly recommend sitting outside on the gorgeous patio! Pork schnitzel is a must!
We ended up being very happy with our meal on the patio, this after being a little bit taken aback first: we had made a reservation and required a table outside; but we were told that the reservation doesn’t offer that option. The atmosphere in the inside is entirely different from the outside; it could be nice for winter time but in the summer it’s a little bit stuffy and dark.
Needless to say were very disappointed like we told our waiter especially since we were celebrating a birthday. A few minutes after the waiter came back and told us that they had found us a table outside. We were very touched by the effort and kindness. We really enjoyed our evening! The food was very good, especially the Foccacia!
Excellent outdoor dining. Very relaxing evening.
I live in the North Hills but love Introducing my friends to new eateries. My 2 friends had never been to The Abbey and throughly enjoyed themselves.
The patio was closed due to possible rain, but we sat under the awning.. the ambiance is really very nice with the fountain and the foliage. We will go again. The food was good. I look forward to trying other choices on the menu.
Nothing special and interior is tooooo dark. No wonder it was a former funeral home -- creepy! Food was so-so. I do not believe I will return. Thank you
Super delicious and cool atmosphere
Fun spot especially for outdoor dining!
Great atmosphere, great food and great service. Make this your next any occasion stop if you haven't already.
Beautiful building with nice 3 tv’s in the bar, multiple rooms for seating, like living room, covered porch, outside. Had excellent meat loaf dish, red pepper pasta was enjoyed. Crab meat salad with loads of crabmeat. Good beer. Great find. They also sell takeout with a station within the restaurant.,
We've eaten at the Abbey a number of times and never been disappointed. The food is excellent! I'd call it upscale comfort food. And the choice of seating is terrific...inside, outside didn't matter. It's all great.
Enjoyed dining outside!
I loved the quaint atmosphere of The Abbey. The service was subpar and we were sat in a room which lack proper air conditioning which took away from me enjoying my meal. I had the roasted red pepper goat cheese pasta, the pasta was good but the sauce lacked flavor. My husband had steak frites and said it was delicious.
Went for Sunday brunch. Felt relaxed the entire time. Good was delicious! We got the Corned Beef Benny and Pancake breakfast. Beyond better than we expected! Definitely going to go back for dinner sometime.
This is a hard review to write! The ambiance was fantastic, the homemade focaccia bread was excellent, service very good ... but my main course, the $18 crab salad, was a disaster... I can’t even think about it without feeling a little ill. That said, there may be other things on the menu that are as good as the focaccia. My husband had the Caesar with shrimp and thought it was pretty good. Likely to go back to see if I just made a bad choice.
My bro and I bro’d out a bit over bro brunch.
I travel around the country every week for my job and that means I basically eat at least one meal in a restaurant everyday. Abbey has been one of my favorite restaurants/bar/hangout spot not only in Pittsburgh, but around the US. Even though I live a block away from the restaurant I haven’t been able to stop by for a while now due to my travel schedule. I was craving the lamb burger with an egg (my usual order), and so my wife and I decided to go to Abbey for brunch.
With that being said, I was quite disappointed this time around with the service. The server said she wouldn’t be able to let me add an egg to the lamb burger because of limited space on the grill. That made no sense to me because there was a already a regular beef burger on the menu which came with an egg. Even though I pointed that out to her and told her that I always ordered the lamb burger with an egg and that it would be really nice if she could ask the kitchen if they are able to do it, she insisted that they cannot and didn’t even bother to ask the kitchen, just a flat out no-can’t-do. I opted to order the regular burger with an egg instead. When the food came out, my burger was overcooked and dry and the meal was mediocre, nothing like it used to be.
I hope the restaurant takes this as constructive feedback and brings back the quality and level of service this place always had. Also, it’s not really brunch if you can’t add an egg to it - pretty much a universal rule at this point. Would love to go back and have the awesome lamb burger with an egg (as always)!
Service was good but slow.
