The Abbey on Butler Street
We’ve exposed brick walls and wooden ceiling beams, centered one of the largest outdoor seating spaces in the city around a swan fountain, and crowned the coffeehouse with a reclaimed church rose window restored as a chandelier.
We’ve created the Abbey to give a sense of place, the feeling that you’ve discovered something novel, yet close to home. We’ve brought together a coffeehouse, two bars, and a bistro all under a single roof. We're exploring the world of craft - come explore it with us.
Crisp Romaine / Aged Shaved Parmesan / House Caesar Dressing / House Croutons / Cracked Black Pepper / White Anchovies
Chicken & Waffles
Fried Chicken Breast / Buttermilk Waffle / Spicy Honey Butter / Pure Maple Syrup
House Made Falafel Patty / Arugula / Tomato / Red Onion / Cucumber / Tzatziki / Golden Wheat Wrap
Brunch was fantastic as usual!
We were seated outside and enjoyed a lovely evening, service was excellent, we all enjoyed our meals…especially the chicken dinner.
Great atmosphere and vibe the food was good and service was good. Maybe a little more on the menu would be nice and specials for each day
The menu is very short right now, but the food was fabulous as always. Our server was friendly and very nice, but didn't come to our table for VERY extended periods of time.
Outstanding brunch atmosphere. My husband and I enjoyed our anniversary brunch in the outdoor dining section, complete with cocktails, coffee and good food.
No outdoor seating for our visit since the weather was threatening to rain (and rained shortly after we left). Very noisy inside, difficult to hear staff and our tablemates but the food was delicious and the drinks were well-made. We will be back.
Great drinks, great food, and great service!
Went for brunch and it was excellent. Try the french toast...yum.
I loved the vegetarian lasagna. It's really one of my favorite dishes at the Abbey.
Their outside dining area is beautiful and soothing. The service is always great.
Abbey has one of the best outdoor seating areas in Pittsburgh. They have a fountain and adequate umbrella coverage to provide a bit of sanctuary on a temperate day.
That said, they seem to use the comfort of their space to manipulate prices for their mediocre offerings. When my boyfriend and I dined there last night, we ordered the Malibu Chipper and the Beet and Mushroom Salad to share. When the waiter brought the fish to the table, I had to check that he had understood we ordered an entrée size because it was a medium basket of starchy fries with five 1-inch cubes of fried fish on top, priced at $22. Unfortunately, the order was correct. The salad, while delicious, was medium-sized with mostly greens covered in vinaigrette and a small sampling of thinly shaved beets and mushrooms (and about three rings of red onion). For $16, I had expected to receive either a large portion or more substantial toppings, but neither was the case. We left hungry (after accruing a $98 bill for an appetizer, two entrees, and 4 beers) so we picked up a pizza from Piccolo Forno on the way home.
The wait time for food was brief—probably about 10 minutes, possibly due to the fact that we arrived at 5:15—and the waiter was attentive, but seemingly unfamiliar (and unconcerned) with the menu, at least their beverages. When asked about beverage prices, he said he wasn't sure but figured about $7-8 for beer and didn't check to verify this claim. When asked to describe a beer, he simply re-read the title and simply stated that it was “a Pale Ale, not an IPA”.
Overall, I would recommend this place only for the enjoyment of the outdoor seating, and only for a beverage and appetizer due to the unreasonable overpricing.
Helpful staff with lots of energy and great food. I’ve been meaning to check this place out for years and regret not trying it sooner
Great service, setting and food! I highly recommend The Abbey on Butler Street!
We were in a little strip of 2 tops against glass and the patio- there were several house flies buzzing around. Understandable as we were right by a door, but I almost asked to move bc they were distracting/ gross. So heads up to staff- lots of flies right there, keep an eye on it!
Some of the dinners were good. Some were awful. Waiter was very good and accommodating. Noice level was through the roof. Difficult to communicate.
We went early on a Sunday night. We got a seat outside by the fountain and it was beautiful! Limited vegan options and it was very busy, but everyone was lovely and the food was delicious!
We were a Bachelorette party but when greated by the host, he was quite rude and made comments that were disrespectful. We honestly thought about eating somewhere else
The Abbey is one our favorites in a Lawrenceville. The food is always good and the service top notch. We live in the neighborhood and are happy to have the Abbey as our neighbor. I always recommend it to anyone who wants a nice meal. The patio rocks!
Good food and great atmosphere!
I was meeting with out of town guests who were interested in patio seating and this was the perfect place.
We really enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere on the patio.Waiter was great.
Food took forever and the coffee was horrible along with the salad. Only oil
It was a good place but very loud and crowded. Sitting outside would have been nice. Food was very good though but took a while to come out.
Very nice establishment, the drinks are a little pricey but overall the experience was great.
New menu and everything we had was amazing! The server had recently been able to try everything, so he had great suggestions.
Delectable food, great coffee, innovative cocktails and fabulous atmosphere. We enjoy sitting about the fountain outside or sitting in the cozy inside. Roman, our waiter, was super attentive.
A wonderful experience in a picturesque setting, with good service (at a time when everyone is short staffed.)
Beautiful outdoor seating by the fountain!
Had a reservation for 2 outside. Asked for shade and was told we could not have the table in the shade because it was for 4 people. We were seated at a table for 2 with little shade. Within 15 minutes 2 people were seated at the table for 4 in the shade. Infuriating and very uncomfortable lunch in the blazing sun.
Friendly staff, knowledgeable waitstaff, food very good, and the restaurant history very intersecting. Will definitely return.
The new look of the back area is very cute. Keep up the amazing updates.
The Abbey is one of my favorite restaurants in Pgh, and last night, seated inside for the first time in well over a year, was as good as ever!
The food, service and ambiance were great. We thought the salads we got needed a little more dressing, but it was no problem to get more when we asked. The Maple and Beet salad with chicken and burger were amazing. I got the Nashville Hot Sauce on the side for my chicken and it was delicious. Definitely will be going back and highly recommend.
Love the look and feel of the space, but unfortunately between the music and the crowd talk its shockingly noisy. Found myself shouting and leaning forward to be heard by my table. This was indoors for Sunday brunch.
The staff was great, but I was kind of disappointed with the breakfast itself - it was like the most basic eggs with bacon, toast and hash browns... Two of the latter for some reason. Even with that, a shocking amount of empty plate showing. Felt a little ripped off.
I'd love to see some options there, different breads for toast, an English or Irish style breakfast, a protein option...
That said, I'm not negative on the place and intend to return, just think for the price on my first experience, the Abbey fell a little short from a culinary perspective.
Very pleasant experience, good food, good service.
Excellent service with Sean, great drinks, accommodated a of our requests, excellent service recovery and resolution softer a small issue.
All in all a lovey experience on the shaded porch on a hot day to celebrate an 86th birthday. Roman was a terrific waiter.
The noise level was good, service was good, ambiance was lovely. We ate on the covered porch. Great location and nice to have a dedicated parking lot across the street. The food was good. The only disappointment was the very limited entrée menu.
Lovely outdoor patio dining venue! We observed several walk up diners being declined in site of open tables and concluded that this restaurant is doing a great job of matching demand with its service capacity. Kudos! It made for great service and a lovely evening. The spicy chicken sandwich and Mac n cheese were excellent and the beet salad was very tasty.
This place has degenerated horribly during the pandemic. It used to be very good, with a very innovative menu. Now, it is snacks and sandwiches, and relatively lousy service. Hopefully it returns to its former splendor.
Loved it! Amazing drinks and food, great service!
