My family of five, ages 16 -77, throughly enjoyed our gourmet meal. The menu choices were very varied and met the tastes of everyone. With one exception, my daughter, who is Vegan and gluten-free, found the menu limited for her. The service was attentive, but not hovering.

In T&R's former iteration as Volt, the food and service were superlative. In 2021, it reopened as Thacher and Rye. We went for the first time in April of 2021. The food and the service were good enough, not necessarily memorable as it was at Volt, but good enough that we decided to return for our wedding anniversary in June 2022. What a disappointment. The food was only passable (and at the prices asked, the food better be dang good!). Possibly the best offering was the Pork Rillettes; unfortunately, it was served with biscuits (biscuits?? instead of baguette?) that competed with and overpowered the flavor of the rillettes. Green Asparagus Salad was fair. Our entree was the chicken: Boring! Needed salt. My own chicken is a thousand times better. We had no desire for dessert. The servers wear jeans, not just jeans, but baggy, ill-fitting jeans with hiking boots. Really? Fancy building, fancy tables, expensive food--and baggy jeans?

I should start by saying that I am a big fan of Chef Voltagio and have come to expect something close to perfection at this restaurant. Last night, however, was a disappointment. First, the wine offerings by the glass could be much improved, but that wouldn't prompt me to take the time to write a review. There is no way nice to say that whomever was on the meat station needs to be retrained. I was served a pork chop that was so overcooked it couldn't even be cut with a steak knife . The waiter handled the mishap perfectly, by quickly offering and delivering an alternative entree. A neighboring table experienced exactly the same thing. Unfortunately, the one-hour drive and price point of this restaurant does not allow for such mishaps in my book.

Elegant food, prepared with finesse, with unique flavors, and in proper portion sizes. Certain items ordered by our table of 4 were excellent. The goat cheese ravioli and the sticky toffee cake were standouts as excellent. The least impressive main course was the cod, which was rather bland. I wanted to say it was delicate, but it was in fact bland. However, none of the food was unpleasant and all were prepared with exquisite presentation and all were cooked and served properly. The service was excellent. The attention to detail and the demeanor were worthy of training other restaurants. The cocktails were also another high spot. The bartenders crafted delicious and still beautiful drinks. Look, we know you are paying top dollar for meals here, so 'bargain' is not a thing. All you wish for is that the product you get matches the top of market price. And I believe that Thatcher and Rye hits that mark with 85% accuracy. Still a great night out for. special occasion.

Expectations missed. A group of 6 met for supper at 7:45 after having made reservations a month back. We were warmly greeted and found the restaurant in a renovated row house which was spotless, well maintained, and had an easily navigated floorplan. I had read ahead about Thacher and Rye: the chef, the menu, the review in the WaPost. Cocktails were consumed and enjoyed by all - The wine and liquor list quite good and house cocktails range from creative takes on old standards to specialties well worth imbibing. House cornbread with s smoky salmon butter were served thereafter and of outstanding balance of texture, flavor, and quality. I ordered the chopped salad, lasagna, chicken, and strawberry cheesecake (see menu for full descriptions, the house prefers to take full orders so that timing with other guest'smeals may be accomplished). Overall, each dish was beautifully presented and aromatic in a manner which invited the dinner to tuck in. My chief problem was that flavors were not well balanced and I found each dish to showcase one ingredient to the detriment of the overall plate. The chopped salad was not chopped and the bitterness of the greens completely overwhelmed the sweetness of the mandarin orange slices. The lasagna feature the cheese while the pasta and sauce were lost. The chicken was surprisingly greasy and the taste of the morrels lost altogether. That's not to say the meal was bad, it just wasn't great. Combined with the noise level of other diners which made conversation difficult at times and a very courteous and attentive but business-like server I will continue my search for a favorite fine dining establishment.

3rd time at thatcher and rye. Again what a disappointment. $36 for a 1/2 of chicken breast with 2 slices of morel mushrooms and a 1/4 cup of shell pasta. How ridiculous .the dessert was stale cookies with freezer burned ice cream. This meal was a C at best. Good luck.

This was our 2nd time eating at Thacher & Rye (although we had previously also dined at the prior version, Volt). However, this was our first time eating in the outdoor space, which is a large open tent in what was the courtyard of the prior church. We have been at a number of restaurants with outdoor dining, but was the most pleasant space that we have encountered. There is additional courtyard adjacent to the tent, so you look out upon a grassy area which is shaded partially by large fabric hangings, and there is an obelisk with a fireplace at the bottom which adds visual appeal to the area. The food was also excellent, as usual. We will definitely make time to go back soon.

Went for brunch. Food was good, and has been reliably so. Service typically very good, though took a while for cocktails to arrive. Reserved outside seating, but won’t do so again. Ambiance has deteriorated since the installation of a large tent. And, half the diners had dogs underfoot, not all of whom were behaved. If you like that sort of thing then this is the place for you.

This is a restaurant that knows what it's doing! From the delicious, expertly made cocktails to the reasonably portioned and inventive (but not precious) dishes to the exemplary service, Thacher and Rye is a pleasure from start to finish. Now if they could just do something about that yapping dog a couple of tables over…

My husband took me for my birthday dinner. We had wanted to try it for a while now. We had requested outdoor seating, but they said it was booked when we arrived, which is great for them, but we had made our reservation in advance too, so I’m not sure why we were not seated out there. The dining room felt small and like we were squished in with other diners, so it wasn’t very intimate. Our server wasn’t very attentive or helpful. He asked if we wanted a breakdown of the menu and we said yes. All he said was “there’s a 1st, 2nd, entree and for the table menu. For the table menu is shareable.” That’s all he said. Which really wasn’t helpful. I was hoping for his favorite dishes or recommendations or specials. Food came in small portions, even the buttery potatoes from the “For the Table” menu arrived in a ramekin. I will say that the potatoes were easily the best part of our meal. We ordered from each menu subsection (First Course, Second Course, Entree, For the Table and Dessert) to get a feel of their offerings. The menu items didn’t feel cohesive at all. Menu items were strange when they arrived, like not what we expected from the menu description. The short rib was so fatty. The scallops were greasy. The striped bass was good, but overcooked. The dessert was tiny and had weird pineapple that didn’t fit with the rest of the dessert. On top of all of it, the entire staff seemed on edge. No one smiled or seemed happy to be there. The restroom is inconveniently located across from the kitchen in a narrow hallway, which seemed to annoy the serving staff. I would be totally fine never dining here again. It was definitely a waste of a good date night/birthday dinner.

This was our first time at Thacher and Rye, we went to celebrate my fiancé’s birthday. I made the reservation wrote in the comments it was a birthday and also saw the ticket print out when we checked in. ( I used to work at a restaurant, if a special note or something is on the reservation it will print out and the host gives it to the server) anyways, food was good I expected to be blown away, especially is the server is going to try and up sell/ ask a few times about the first and second course options. All in all the food was good, we enjoyed everything! The only this i was disappointed about was it was never acknowledged that we were there for a special occasion. I guess I just expected to much, if a place is this fancy where you can easily drop $2/300 on dinner you would think it wouldn’t have been over looked.

My family and I have had a tradition of eating at Volt (or now Thatcher and Rye) once or twice a year for almost a decade. We loved Volt for the experience; it was never just about the food; it was about the way you were treated with care and courtesy by all of the staff. It was special. And the food was always like a magical culinary journey. Since the restaurant was reimagined into Thatcher and Rye, we have only been twice. The first time, a year ago, was quite lovely overall, even if the service was a noticeable downgrade from Volt. But the food still seemed Volt-worthy from start to finish. Tonight was the first time that three out of four of us walked away feeling disappointed by at least one meal. Most of us did the four-course version of the menu. The chopped salad was whimsical and delicious. The ravioli, a usual favorite, did not disappoint. However, the lamb chops which the waiter praised and encouraged us to order were too rare and were stringy. My mother did not finish them. The falafel entrée, which I ordered out of curiosity (since it seemed like a surprise to see), was quite a mystery. The falafel itself was quite good, but the dish itself seemed muddled and inconsistent. I chewed the grilled ramps for about five full minutes, wishing I could spit them out into my napkin. They were that chewy. The goat cheese cheesecake was light and delicate. I enjoyed it a lot, other than finding another chewy item that seemed like it didn't belong. Was it a strawberry? I am not even sure. The ice cream sandwich that two folks at the table ordered was actually a clunky, enormous dessert: two large, thick chocolate chip cookies with a slap of chocolate ice cream in between. It was not a strong note to finish on. This brings me to the shrimp, which my son ordered as a first course - another clunky, out-of-place dish. The waiter was a delight, thankfully. But the other staff were sometimes sloppy and made mistakes. It's far from the Volt experience in many ways

Food was excellent! Staff was very friendly. I had put on OpenTable that this was for a birthday, and T&R was great about it. The hostess sausage happy birthday when seating us, we got a complimentary glass of champagne and a nice little palette cleanser with a candle to blow out. They went above and beyond! I would definitely recommend it and would go back.

Comfortable setting. Nice menu drinks very good. Food was cooked perfectly - needed to add more perk in the flavors but it was nice - We sat beside a window that looked over the parking lot. When I made the reservations I explained this was my friends 75th birthday so I was disappointed that we were sat there. 2 of our party were already sitting when we arrived so I did not want to move the table- but It would have been nice if we had had a better view for this special day. other than that We left very pleased with our event so thank you for that

Beautiful space - historic building with up-scale yet comfortable design and seating. Impeccable service. Every dish was wonderful but have to especially note the Grilled Cheese appetizer and the goat cheese ravioli. Familiar and yet creative. The collards accompanying the pork dish were a standout. Always love the Parker House rolls at any Voltaggio restaurant. Parking lot which made the whole visit even easier. We'd waited years to eat here and COVID kept getting in the way. Well worth the wait and we'll be back!

What a wonderful dining experience! The service and cuisine were phenomenal! Upon arrival, my table was ready. Helpful staff and specifically my server, Kahla made the whole experience something I will always remember. Chef Bryan Voltaggio was on premise and provided a quick meeting and photo op. I've followed his career and have admired his cooking skills and presentations. He was a Top Chef contender as well as his show with his Brother Michael on Brother vs Brother. Great, creative Chef as you will see by the photos I've attached. The restaurant decor is beautiful and impeccable to view. I had the four course meal which I dined on the grilled cheese appetizer (not a sandwich!), the Ravoli with goat cheese & red pepper Brown butter as the pasta course, Monkfish with cauliflower puree and mussels as the entree and finally the Sticky Toffee Cake and Latte for Dessert. Fantastic! Everything cooked and presented to perfection! This is a MUST on your list of dining experiences. You will not be disappointed!

A disappointment. My first visit since it re-opened in its new incarnation. Our servers were excellent, attentive, and warm. Our main wait person knew her menu and ingredients well, and was aware of my wife’s Allergies and advised us appropriately. We ordered the goat cheese ravioli, which tasted of the refrigerator and dehydration. Upon calling it to the staff’s attention, they removed it from the check. The Parker House rolls were superb, but the smoked trout mousse they were served With was a pairing that just didn’t work. The mousse would have been a better match with hard breads or seeded crackers. The asparagus salad “lacked a theme” and was uninspired. The short-rib was inert, lacking flavor. It was soft and tender, but paired with a polenta, it lacked any umami or evidence of particular seasoning. The lasagna bolognese was the high point of the meal. Zesty, rich, and colorful. This was not evocative of the pleasant memories we have of our meals at “Volt.” We’ll give it another try, but will wait a while before doing so.
