Fabulous food! Loved the brisket, hands down the best. Yummy sides (mac n cheese and Mexican corn) and friendly service were excellent too. Will be back!
Overall good experience. I've visited once for brunch and once for happy hour and I prefer the happy hour/dinner selections. The brunch food was fine - it came out within 10 minutes of ordering and on the smaller portion size, but they offer an unlimited option if you are feeling hungry. They seem to be accommodating for larger groups at brunch. There were several groups of 6+ tables when we visited and may have been why our table for two wasn't visited as much. Not sure if I would return for brunch, but I would go back for a dinner or happy hour.
Well-deserved reputation for being one of the best barbecue restaurants in the area.
Ordered the half rack of pork ribs and they came stacked 3-on-3 and the top ribs looked great but the bottom 3 were fatty and small. Both BBQ sauces in the table (Original & Spicy) tasted the same vinegary taste. I did like the Brussel sprouts and someone ordered the nachos with pulled pork and those were amazing. Had to ask the waiter for extra queso and the 1/2 pound brisket seemed less than that. Was very busy and the noise level made it difficult to talk to the people at our table.
Watch out - the "two-door nachos" can fill you up and leave you no room for your brisket! ;)
We love the bbq meat options, the esquites, the cocktails, the collards! On Monday nights there is a real deal, half price on the meat platter. We weren't there on a Monday this time, but wanted to take a friend who is a bit of a picky eater. She loved it - ordered a kale salad, but kept picking at our pulled pork and ribs, too! We prefer to sit in a booth in the bar area, as it is usually a bit quieter - the main room has a lot of hard surfaces, so the acoustics favor a louder atmosphere. Plus, usually there are few or no children in the bar area (nothing against kids, but many parents do not do as we did, when ours was small, to remove them at the first peep that might disturb other diners). We come here every two or three months, and always say when we leave that we should come more often. Great food and we have always had very good service.
Yum. Best BBQ in NoVa. the thing about TJ's is that while there are several good options for smoked/BBQ meats, the differentiation here is in the sides....most places do good meat and then serve it with sad bagged fries and cole slaw from a bucket. Not here! I could almost just eat a plate of sides but the brisket and pulled pork are such melty buttery smokey goodness.
Amazing food and exceptional staff.
This was the best BBQ in DC I've ever had and the service was excellent. Be sure and get the mac and cheese, lean brisket and turkey!
Meat was very dry and cold. really disappointed. Read ranked #1 in DC, no where near that. Had ribs and brisket, without bbq sauce there would have been no flavor. sorry but fact.
It was the best food I had ever had love the burger
Best BBQ I’ve ever had!
The staff was very accommodating when we asked to increase our party size. Our service was awesome and made great recommendations for drinks and how much food to order for our table. I've dined here in the past but our friends haven't so it was nice to introduce them to a place that wowed them. Rock it out Texas Jack's!
Always a great experience
Jack's has the best Brisket I have ever had. Just the right texture and tender. Nice smokey flavor. Perfect for meat lovers palette. Love the creativeness of the plate comes with tasty pickles and pickled onions. Unfortunatly you must order seperate. Increases price fairly significanlty but the sides are hearty and tasty. My daughter let me try the chicken from her salad and was a bit dry and not to flavorful for grilled chicken when the pork and brisket are so flavorful. Would of given a 5 for foodcept I tried that chicken.
Brisket sandwich was very good (the queso doesn't belong there but was good). Sausage spicy and tasty.
All in all, this is a good place. The food is quite tasty. Brisket is nice, smokey, juicy and very, very delicious. Collards are awash with delightful smoked pork, a bite of vinegar, and a bit of spark from cayenne... love them!. The rest of the meal was good but not outstanding. Otherwise, the room has lots of hard surfaces, echoes, big noises... distractions and disturbances, but what modern restaurant doesn't these days? Can't argue with success, I guess.
There was no Ribs! We went there for beef ribs and they were out and had been for a few days. Little disappointing for my international guest.
Also nothing for the kids to do. Expected at least crayons and something to draw on.
The tasting plate was excellent though.
Our server was terrific, but he couldn't compensate for the mediocre quality of the food. We make better ribs ourselves at home; and the corn side dish, despite its interesting menu description, tasted like plain old canned corn. Fries were pretty good. The place was VERY noisy and the chairs were hard.
We usually enjoy the barbeque at Texas Jack's very much. However, during our last visit the ribs and brisket were very dry and almost tasteless except for the overwhelming taste of black pepper. They may have been having a bad night, but our experience was way below what we expect from Texas Jack's
I very much enjoy the food at Texas Jack's. The bbq chicken, potato salad, corn bread, and cole slaw were all excellent. My family also loves the pulled pork. The service was great. The only downside is the noise level. It is not an easy place to have a conversation. I would equate the noise level to a cafeteria. Our reservation was for 7:45pm on a Sat night.
Wonderful BBQ food. Would come again
Excellent place for Barbecue. I’m so glad I took my parents here as a goodbye dinner before they move to Florida.
Went to Texas Jacks with another couple for an lunch/dinner (AKA Linner) on Saturday. Overall, it is a pretty good place. I'm not sure the bbq rises to the level of best in the city as WaPo has it. In fact, Looney Q's BBQ truck in Woodbridge has better spare ribs and brisket. There were a couple of things I really liked about the place and a couple of things I didn't like so much.
First the likes. The smoked chicken wings, buffalo style were fantastic. I'm usually pretty traditional when it comes to my wings, but the smoky flavor really added to the buffalo sauce. Plus they were huge meaty (leg-style) wings. Quite delicious and I wish I had more than an appetizer of them. The sides were very good too. We tried the mac and cheese, fried corn, smashed cucumbers and beans. All very tasty - the mac and cheese being my favorite (of course).
Now the downers. The spare ribs were pretty dry, not super tender either. I know Texas-style smoked is on the dry side, but these were overdone. The brisket was also only ok and the Texas Jacks sauce to top it was not really to my liking. I could see how others might like it, but none of the four of us did. Not to be too negative though, I'm nit picking since this is supposed to be the best.
One thing I really did not like was the seating. Wood slat chairs that were very hard and uncomfortable. Yes, they blend into the ambience, but they also blended into my butt ;)
Service was friendly and professional. Especially at the bar, where just a look brought the tender over for service. They have a decent selection of beers and whiskeys too.
On a BUSY Friday night Parking and NOISE were both an issue. We couldn't hear each other. Shout and lean in to be heard. The waiter screwed up the order as he didn't hear the word KALE and brought a spinach Caesar instead. The brisket was fatty, the beef rib was stringy and the pork ribs were acceptable for a chain type BBQ. Peppery Bark on all products. the corn bread was dry and TINY. The beans were okay with a bunch of mystery meat thrown in . No white bread like EVERY Texas Smoke house serves with their Q. Everything was served at ROOM TEMPERATURE. nothing was hot. In general an overpriced over hyped lackluster BBQ restaurant. I drive hours out of my way for good Q... this place doesn't warrant a return visit.
Got Brisket sandwich recommended by Washington Post review. It was dry and tough. Very disappointing. My companion got the sampler - really good, especially the pulled pork. Strangely the brisket on his plate was good. The service was good and I would have asked our server for queso sauce or something for the sandwich, but the place was too noisy to talk, so we paid and left.
So probably would not recommend.
Great food and great service.
The Texas Jacks Barbecue brunch is a great deal. The food is amazing, especially the macaroni and cheese and esquites sides. My friends and I will definitely be back.
Sitting in the old home of Whitey’s, great food and great service are the norm at Texas Jacks. Even though it can get a little noisy at capacity, it is my go to for business lunches when hosting partners, with most requesting it by name after the first visit.
I have a Big Green Egg and smoke a lot of meat at home. I’m a bit of a BBQ snob and can turn out pretty good product, so it takes a lot for me to get excited about BBQ. Texas Jack’s is definitely one of the few places that makes me question if it’s really worth all the effort to make my own!
I have had the brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. The brisket has a wonderfully peppery bark that stands up well to the smoke. The pulled pork is moist and mildly smoky, with a hint of warm spices (cinnamon?) in the rub. The 1/4 chicken was good, meat was moist and tender.
They offer two sauces, both non-offensive, but my heart lies in Eastern Carolina so I would personally prefer a vinegar based Carolina red sauce.
Sides are good, particularly the Brussels sprouts and beans. Many of the sides definitely have a Tex-Mex flair.
They have a great rotating selection of beers and full service bar.
Overall consistently great food, backed up with friendly and quick service!
Great service, delicious food. A bit loud due to the setup of the dining room, but still very enjoyable.
Their burritos are amazing! Filled with tender meat and all sorts of delicious toppings. Glad there's no rice included - more room for meat! The guacamole was one of the best we've had in the area. You can go wrong having lunch here!
Food was great but poor service. Not once did they check to see if everything was ok or if we needed additional beverages. We had to flag down another server to receive our check. Good food - bad service.
Excellent brisket (USUALLY), but sometimes a bit too fatty. Brussel Sprouts always excellent. Potato Salad & cole slaw very good. Wings very good. Shredded pork OK. Chicken has been consistently under-cooked. Great beer selection.
BUT the volume is often deafening! Like other restaurants with all hard, reflective surfaces,
it's a real turn-off for a party of four with good hearing, to have to lean forward and shout at each other
to be heard.
This was our first visit. We will definitely return. Food was great, shared the small meat combo so we could get a taste of everything. It was more than enough for you, had plenty to bring home.
Everything was ok, but literally just ok. We had several sides and the meat sampler and nothing stood out.
Disappointing, to say the least. After trying unsuccessfully to get in after the Wash Post’s rave reviews, I picked and had success at 1:30 pm last Saturday afternoon. It was hard to hear the waiter. I had to ask for my appetizer salad after 20 minutes of waiting. It took 45 min to get our meals at a non-busy time. My family could see others who came later eating, and we were only a small party of three without complicated orders. I asked our waiter if our orders had been missed but he said no (I could see him in a long discussion with someone behind the counter). No explanation for the long wait. The brisket was fatty and unappetizing, and we wondered how it could be “Texas” without mesquite. The biscuits were good but our sampler platter was nothing special. My salad was too many greens in a much too small bowl (put my fork in and salad spilled out on the table) and not much else. We won’t be back.
BBQ was tasteless and not as tender as it should be. Chicken was high point.
We had the brisket & the pulled pork. Both were DELICIOUS! Great whiskey offerings, too. :-)
Great Texas style brisket. Any side dish is a taste treat, we go there a lot!
Went there after reading the Wash Post has rated it as the number one barbecue place in the area. Service was fine, atmosphere was appropriate but the food was disappointing.
