Tessa is a long narrow restaurant with close tables, and that means noise.
Also, very strangely, its tables have plastic, uncomfortable chairs for their diners. For a rather expensive restaurant to force patrons to sit on cheap-looking, uncomfortable plastic chairs with no padding is inexcusable, in my view. It's so off-putting for me, I may not go back.
Plus, the concentrated vocal din makes everyone speak as loudly as they can, so conversation is difficult.
The food, with one disappointment in my last visit, was fine.
A very pleasant experience, from making the reservation, to enjoying a warm welcome and excellent service, along with a varied menu of well-prepared food. We will return.
Great service and food. Good wines by the glass. Very helpful with food allergies. A bit noisy for older folks but a table in the back is a little quieter
I went to Tessa for brunch. They had good drink specials ($7 cocktails). The food is normal, nothing extraordinary but good quality.
Loved the build your own Benny option. Nice, casual brunch option.
Great brunch (especially the drinks!!). Did have to wait a bit for our beverages, but worth the wait! And make sure to order the French toast!
Fantastic place for a date night or to catchup with a friend.
Service was very fast and friendly. The food was closer to average. The chicken was a bit dry, the beet salad was full of beets and just a little bit of goat cheese--would have preferred some greens in it. The gnocchi was delicious.
But constant water refills, and very quick delivery of food.
Each dish was excellent quite a nice surprise! Very busy and noisy. Service was also ver good and moved us to a quieter table . Tables are tightly organized best to avoid line up tables on the left side of the dining area unless you have a big group.
Great appetizers and pasta. Service was excellent. Keep us on time for a show at the Beacon.
We were a party of 4 and were seated toward the rear. That was good given the rest of the restaurant is too dark and there was better lighting in the rear. Unfortunately, that said, the restaurant was way too noisy for our party of 4. I thought perhaps the noise level would improve once the theater crowd departed but it didn't. Very difficult to hear and we sat for over 3 hours on very uncomfortable, hard chairs. Hard to recommend Tessa if you're looking for a satisfying and relaxing dinner.
This restaurant was a great find
during my visit to NYC . I shared a creative salad and I had cacio e pepe pasta and my husband had a great burger. Our waitress was knowledgeable and helpful. It was a bit noisey in the restaurant.
TESSA is fabulous little spot in uws that’s been kept a secret amongst locals.
Great atmosphere, we had a table in the back room that was easily accessible but private at the same time. Food was delicious, a must have is the shareable meatballs and mussels -both were awesome!!! Next time I am at the American Museum of Natural History I will make sure to plan dinner here!
Tessa has become a real favorite of ours. My husband even doesn't mind sitting at the bar due to comfortable bar stools. Food and service always good and friendly.
Tessa is always reliable & good the noise level is a bit high but we had find evening.
Lively atmosphere, very friendly & welcoming service. Delicious food - large portions.
Good food, nice vibe, food somewhat over salted but pasta was cooked perfectly.
Wonderful restaurant! Tessa is definitely one of the best restaurants on the Upper West Side for the food, ambiance and service.
It’s a great restuarant: the food was well prepared and delivered hot. The service was great: friendly efficient and personal. The bussing (clearing of the dishes) was prompt and we enjoyed the experience no end. We will go back, for a meal, to entertain for an occasion. It was good value and we recommend the restuarant.
It,s a fabulous place. We've been coming here since it opened and have brought friends who live on the east side. All have agreed with us that it's the best place on the west side. Great service, food and lots of activity.
3 if us had fish. All fabulous!
The food was flavorful & delicious, everything esp the eggplant. We will be back!!
We sat at the last 2 top in the very back of the dinning room along the right wall.
The bar area is great and I would preferred sitting in this area. The white noise from the competing voices in the dining room was deafening.
Our table wasn’t clean and had remnants of a prior meal that consisted of plum tomatoes. My guest and I ordered 2 courses and I added a soup course. Why in the word did my soup arrive simultaneously with our appetizers is beyond my obvious comprehension of what is logical & reasonable. We had the Cauliflower Fritto & the Flaked Salmon Tartare, Delicious!!! The soup was hardly hot. A pet peeve of mine is not being serve a hot soup, hot.
Not 2 mins after all three of our plates and my soup bowl was cleared, my Grilled Branzino arrived... It took another 3 plus minutes for my guests Griggstown Chicken to arrive. Not acceptable.
Please note, I ordered my absolutely delectable Branzino without the potatoes and was assured by my waitress that she would have them removed. She also offered to provide additional broccoli rabe in place of the potato... Well this did not happen and I had more potato than broccoli rabe.
My Branzino was perfectly prepared and wonderfully seasoned. My wife had the chicken and that too was incredible!
Dirty table, unfulfilled offering and a very very loud dining experience gives this restaurant 2.5 stars. I would have given 4.0 out of 5 if my table was clean, my soup was hot and served as a 2nd course and if our dinners were served together. We chose to skip the dessert because of the aforementioned hiccups. Clean the tables please!!!
Food was delicious and the service was great.
All four of us loved our meal pre-show at the Beacon. We loved everything we chose from the menu, but they could have more salads. We sat in a back area that was very quiet and private. We were there on Valentine’s Day and the service, food, and atmosphere were all top notch, which is never easy for restaurants. I generally cut restaurants a little slack on those major dining out holidays, but this restaurant did not need it. We will definitely be back for our next show!
Great food and atmosphere for a great price. Got great feedback from everyone at the table!
Love this neighborhood place. Good vibe and ambiance and food always good as well.
Everything was perfect but the only issue i have is that they KEPT rushing US OUT! WAS VERY ANNOYING. ASIDE THAT FOOD WAS GOOD
Perfect for a midweek dinner. Appetizers were delicious especially the cauliflower fritto with mint Greek yogurt with basil. Grilled Branzino and Osso Bucco as entree's were also wonderful. On arrival, we were greeted warmly by the friendly staff and the service was very attentive. The atmosphere was cozy. Enjoyed the whole experience.
We had a great meal before a show at the Beacon Theatre. Service and food were excellent. Server asked if we were seeing a show in order to gauge the timing of our courses. Much appreciated. We will definitely return and would recommend Tessa to others.
Over priced for very mediocre food.
Great spot. Meatball appetizer v good. As was cauliflower appetizer and bucatini entree. Service was friendly, attentive and considerate for theatre obligation.
What an absolutely delightful dining experience. We were quickly escorted past the cheerfully noisy bar to the quiet of the dining room. The restaurant is thoughtfully appointed and comfortable. The restaurant week menu was explained in addition to the regular menu and we were given the option of ordering items that only appeared on the limited menu separately.
The fried cauliflower with yogurt sauce and flat bread with cheese and figs were perfect to share and tasty temptations of what was to come. Each entree was plated with care and the contents matched the presentation. I’d have them work on their Bloody Mary, but that’s my only suggestion.
VERY noisy. Could not talk - MUSIC was so loud. We asked again and again and then finally they lowered it.
Great food and ambiancec
Could converse without problems hearing.
Knowledgable of answers to all of our questions.
Good customizing of the ingredients to our requests and preferences.
Undercooked item was acknowledged and remedied in short order from the kitchen.
Service was attentive yet not bothersome.
No impatience perceived when we lingered a bit longer at the table to finish up all of our dialog with each other.
Friendly “thank you” from all personnel as we departed felt genuine.
Excellent meal, a bit expensive but good. Very energetic atmosphere with brick and metal like ceiling sound was loud but that’s Tessa
We ate at the bar. Delicious osso buca & truffle risotto. Both delicious & hearty portions. Sal & Michael took great care of us at bar. Very friendly. Always available. It all made for a very fun delicious satisfying evening!! Can’t wait to go back!!
We ordered the beet salad and it was very good. I ordered a salad with shrimp and it was good but not great. It didn’t have enough flavor. We had the ice cream for dessert and the pumpkin flavor was over powering.
