Terrapin Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Terrapin was a great find! We had the four-course tasting menu and the sommelier wine pairing. Both the food and the wine were exquisite. I had the beets, risotto, scallops and chocolate elegance. The food tasted fresh, with layered, complex flavors. The dessert was out of this world in overall taste, presentation, and flavor combinations. My husband, who likes spicier food, had the Autumn soup, calamari, halibut and autumn crumble. It was all excellent, but he is still especially raving about the calamari with the dipping sauce. The wine pairings were spot on and brought out the best in each dish.
We can’t wait to visit again and try more of the menu. Also, while we were dressed up for a birthday dinner, the other patrons were a mix of dressy and nice casual. So, it is not just a “Special Occasion “ place. Service was very attentive but not intrusive.
Came here with my wife for our first wedding anniversary while we were visiting Virginia Beach, and it was a great experience. The menu had been pre-printed with a "Happy anniversary Mr. and Mrs. ....." on the top which was a nice touch. The server was a little awkward, but perhaps being a slower Sunday night, the regular flow of dinner was just different. The food was delicious and we ended up sharing the short rib pasta and halibut because both items were really well prepared with a lot of great flavors. They had live music outside near where we sat, but it was just a single guitarist who's level was pleasant enough to be able to talk to each and enjoy the music. The prices are a little high, but the food really does live up to it, and the atmosphere is a little fancy, but not over the top. All in all I would recommend Terrapin and would go back if I'm in the Virginia Beach area.
We started with a cocktail - excellent. The cauliflower appetizer -was unique and delicious. Pappardalle pasta with shortrib ragu housemade and the duck was absolutely perfect and tender. Bottle of Zweigelt was great with the food and moderately priced. Gelato for dessert topped off an excellent meal!!!
We have been to this restaurant several times each time we are on vacation at Virginia Beach. In the past the food and atmosphere were excellent. This year however the restaurant was way too noisy, service was weak and the fish was very dry. Overall we were very disappointed.
We enjoyed Terrapin. Everything was on point the food, the service and the ambiance. The beet salad was both beautiful in its presentation and delicious. My husbands strip looked good and he looked happy. The arugula salad was fresh and delicious , a nice complement to the pork belly ravioli which was light and tasty . Not sure where they put the pork belly but I loved it anyway!
Nice location away from the hustle of the Boardwalk. Interesting menu with eclectic selection. Beet salad was very tasty. Good wine selection, but a bit pricey. Outdoor seating was nice, but watch for large group place settings. The large group near us was extremely loud and was a distraction from the overall experience.
What a wonderful little secret in Virginia Beach. The Octopus was amazing.....out of this world. Tender, delicate, and with a hearty red sicilian sauce.....like being back in Italy. The fresh pasta dish was perfect.....pasta al dente..... The scallops were nice, but I thought the sauce overwhelmed their sweetness. Just a lovely dinner. Thank you.
Terrapin is one of our favorite restaurants but it was difficult to enjoy Sunday night due to noise level. It was a busy night and so loud in the dining room that several times we had trouble hearing our server speak which, needless to say, significantly impacted our own ability converse during an anniversary dinner. Disappointing during the course of almost 3-hour special occasion of considerable expense so we might rethink that in the future but otherwise it was a lovely dinner.
Our dining experience at Terrapin was very good. There were a few negatives however. My husband and I both had the arugula salad which was very fresh but lacked enough dressing to really taste it. Our calamari appetizer was excellent! Crispy and not greasy and very tasty! My halibut was very well prepared and excellent however there were only some very thin strands of a vegetable that I don't remember underneath. My husband ordered the duck breast which was also very well prepared but only received a few slices of duck instead of the whole breast. The portions are a bit small considering there are no sides included. The ambiance and service were excellent.
