Terra & Vine Ratings and Reviews
I have been to Terra many times because I love it’s small plated delicacies and they have a great wine list. But sometimes they change the menu too quick for me. They had a wonderful grilled octopus that’s been changed to one with a tomato sauce. Not even close! I hope other patrons have commented to the staff or the manager; I did.
We were there for a Birthday, which I had noted on the Open Table reservation. No acknowledgement of that. Not a major issue.
The main issue was the dinner. I had the lemon chicken. Unfortunately it tasted like liquid smoke had been poured on it. Others at the table smelled a powerful unpleasant order and we determined that it was my dish. The rest of my family had pasta and felt that it was very ordinary and did not taste fresh. I picked Terra & Vine for my (special) birthday. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. The server and the atmosphere were nice; although both the women’s and men’s bathrooms were pretty disgusting. Very unfortunate.
4 of us shared 2 generously-portioned appetizers--the salami pizza and fried calamari. The fish special was delicious mahi-mahi, prepared with an interesting sauce. Others enjoyed the gamberi, salmon, and pork chops. Our reservations were quickly honored--and we were greeted enthusiastically by owner Alpana Singh, who our waiter consulted to ensure that our food allergies were accommodated. This is a great choice after a movie, especially as cold weather descends on Chicago. The only problem is that the seating by the door is very cold --every time the revolving door moves, a blast of cold air arrives.
Ordered salads. My lightly dressed salad was very salty. The service by our friendly waiter was very lackadaisical and there was no one in the restaurant. Our waiter spent the better portion of his time chatting with all of the other employees.
The party rooms and the bar are very very pretty.
Hoping this restaurant gets their act together.
Food just OK - well prepared but too much fattiness for my taste. Service was weirdly aggressive. I faced a passive-aggressive argument several times during the meal after making polite and routine requests (the menu, another place setting, hot sauce). After that we were ignored so much that I twice had to get up from the table to flag the waiter down (the hot sauce that never came and the check).
The service was outstanding by every level of employee. I had a few special needs being in a wheelchair and I was made to feel very comfortable. Our waiter knew we had theater tics and timed our service accordingly. On top of all these nice things, the food was excellent, prepared as requested, and our waiter gave us excellent descriptions and recommendations when asked. I would go back in an instant.
And if you are a chocolate lover, you'll have some excellent choices, as you can see!
My sister and brother-in-law recommended this restaurant; they had had a great salmon dinner there. However, my visit did not turn out so well. I order the three course special menu, with mahi-mahi as the entree. The cauliflower side was tasty but the fish was hard to eat --so I left most of it.
We were very disappointed with the food. I had the pork Milanese and it was awful. They use a high quality Berkshire pork which they flatten and heavily bread and fry. The only thing I could taste was the breading which was very salty. My husbands pasta was okay. We had the mushroom pizza which was just okay. The pieces of mushroom were too large. Our expectations were high and we were very disappointed.
The food was good but nothing special. Our waitress was nice but not attentive enough and service was lacking. We had to ask multiple times for bread, she never came to check on us during the meal and at the conclusion of the meal attempted to clear my plate which was only half eaten without asking if I wanted to take it home. I had to request that it be wrapped and she seemed a little put off by the request. It also took a very long time for her to bring the check and then settle the bill. The man who was in charge of water service was great, we never took more than a couple of sips of water before he was there to refill our glasses. My friends and I decided we probably wouldn't return as there are so many other and better options in downtown Evanston.
We were very excited about our dinner as this was our first visit to the restaurant. The food (three salmon and one chicken) were very tasty and served hot, and the Brussels Sprouts salad was great for sharing. The wines by the glass were good, but were priced by 6 and 8 ounce pours; we found that unusual since most restaurants price by 6 and 9 ounce pours (and the 8 ounce portions were priced as if they were 9 ounces). Overall, we were very pleased with our food selections, through no particular assistance from our server who did not act very engaged in doing anything other than taking our orders. The restaurant was quite busy, though not packed, but the noise level is very high. It is difficult to carry on a conversation when everyone has to speak very loudly or miss out on what is being said across the table. It was very nice that Alphana stopped by to chat with us. I'm not sure that we will return soon, though, unless maybe it's just two of us so we won't be so pressed to be heard.
