Ten Penny Ratings and Reviews
I was seated at the table next to the kitchen and rest rooms so I felt like I was sitting in the hallway. Molly tried her best but the kitchen must have been a mess. The soup and wedge salad was fine but the crab risotto ( Which was the reason we walked there in the cold) first had no crab and had no taste. And it took forever which explains the fact that we could get a seat at 7:30 on a Saturday Used to love the place don't know what happened
Food was great. I subtracted a star on the service because it was a bit of a wait to get our food (40 minutes). The waitress even came by after a half hour to tell us our food would be out soon. It was another 10 or so minutes after that. However, it was a busy Saturday night, but keep the time in mind if you are attending a show.
Cocktails are different and delectable! Food not as good. Best item was the Brussel sprouts appetizer. Worst was hush puppy. Waiter didn't realize we had theater tix and our fault for not telling him sooner. He had waited a while before placing our dinner order tickets so it took longer than we had hoped. We had been to a private party there a few years ago, where the food and cocktails were excellentl.
This was my second time visiting Ten Penny. The food, servers and atmosphere is really nice. I had the brisket sandwich the first time. It was tender and flavorful. The second time, I had the crab cake sandwich. It was cooked just right and seasoned well. I don't think it should be a "sandwich.". The toppings detract from the flavor of the crab cake.
The only problem I had with my second visit was that our food took excessively long and there was no explanation. Our server apologized, but it didn't appear to be her fault. I have no idea what they were doing in the kitchen. The restaurant was not crowded at the time.
My boyfriend and I had the best date night here on Friday! Beautiful ambiance, friend staff, and pretty quick service. My boyfriend even mentioned to me that we have to come back for another date night in the city! Highly recommend the Ten Penny burger and shrimp and grits (I will forewarn you it is spicy) and definitely try the potato soup! :)
Really loved the Southern Fried Chicken Salad. I was surprised when what looked like croutons turned out to be cornbread croutons. What looked liked onions were pickled beets. Everything about this salad was excellent. Our waiter provided us with great service.
Our waiter was nice. However as soon as we sat he told us he just was sat 2 large parties and that he would do his best. That set the stage for our experience. Not good.
The food took 1 hour and 20 minutes to arrive. It was ok. One plate of salmon was charred black all over. Salad came at the same time as dinner. The shrimp and grits are ok. I would not go back or recommend this restaurant.
Multiple times kitchen staff came to our table to deliver food that was not ours. Strange. Unorganized.
We had been to Ten Penny several times before with a generally good experience. This experience was terrible. We waited 15 minutes for our waitress to greet us. She later explained that she was washing glasses as they were in short supply. She did her best but the management didn't seem prepared to be busy on a Friday night. 2 of the meals were served lukewarm and it was a constant challenge to get the drinks refilled. Terribly disappointed; instead of talking to our friend who we hadn't seen in years the poor service and preparation distracted our conversation.
I would recommend Ten Penny. It was a bit noisy for a business meeting at lunchtime, but for a social meal, it would be fine. We decided to get the cornbread skillet as an appetizer. I think this would have been fine but it was served after our entrees came. Some of us expected salads to come first, but they were brought with the entrees, too. It was like there was a backup in the kitchen that cleared and everything came rushing out all at once. The server knew there was a problem and kept apologizing, but he couldn't control the pace of the kitchen.
The food was good when it came, we ordered the tomato soup/grilled cheese combo which was a winner. The salads were quite large, and one of us got the catfish Poboy which was good. All in all, I would say give it a chance.
In my mind the quality of the meal and the service are equally important. Unfortunately we must have had a trainee attending to our party of four. From lip stains on the water glasses to overdone asparagus. This young woman actually said the kitchen freaked out on her when she asked about getting a replacement serving of asparagus... which she never produced. I feel she was not trained properly to handle both the requests of the guests or internal staff that she has to work with. We probably will not rush to come back soon. Quality of experience (3)...
Had reservation for 6 but table was given to another party so had to switch to a different area. 20 mins for drinks - an hour for apps - entrees were quick after apps.
Did not have the specialty cocktail of the day. Waiter brought the wrong # of drinks.
Calamari was chewy. Egg trio, cornbread, and brussels were good.
Meatloaf was good. Crab risotto was alright - no salt and MASSIVE portion. Chicken and waffles was good but a small portion. PGH salad was fine - nothing special. Potato soup was good.
One PGH salad came without fries. Soup came 10 mins after all other food. Most food needed salt. Some food was only slightly warm, not very hot.
Atmosphere was very loud, there was some sort of bridal party meandering around the restaurant. The walkways around tables and to/from bathrooms were very thin and crowded.
Apps 8/10, food 5/10, service 3/10, atmosphere 6/10.
Disappointing! We’ve been here several times and always had a great meal and experience but not so on Tuesday. Host said he would see if our table was ready then walked away for 5 minutes, there were several open tables. Server asked for our drink order, we weren’t sure yet, walked away without telling us features, making any suggestions. I had catfish, risotto tasted like eating a stick of butter. Server came when we were finished, we asked for the check. She didn’t clear plates, brought check, brought Check back after paid with credit card for signature and laid it down next to dirty plates. Food runners were awesome!
This was the first time for the Sharp Knife to be eating at Ten Penny. We had a sizable group prior to attending a Steelers game and everyone seemed satisfied with their meal. Although the menu was somewhat limited, there was enough to select from for a good brunch. Will return.
We were very disappointed, when we arrived for our 8:30 RSVP and was told they had us down for 8:00. I showed my confirmation to the hostess, she hesitant and look perplexed . She stated well let me go see how we can accommodate you. Took about 10mins. They put us at a table that was by the kitchen n bathroom. The waitress seemed over work and was not very attentive. We sat for about 10mins before she came over, never gave her name, gave us water. It took almost 30 mins before she asked us for our order. Food was just okay nothing great. No one gave apologies for anything. 1st and last time there.
Travel often; not a place I would recommend in Pittsburgh with so many better places to chose from; Service mediocre; nice waiter but wasn’t even going to pour the bottle of wine we ordered; he simply left it on the table; food coming out very slow; however, food was good when it did arrive
Will not return. It was hot inside but comfortably cool outside. There was no air conditioning or any sort of fan to cool off the room. We asked the waiter to do something about the heat and he said there was nothing to do. Our waiter was beyond slow and forgot at least one request each time he came to the table. Even though it was so hot he did not bring an ice bucket for the white wine.
Overall, my experience was underwhelming. I enjoyed the ambience and the decor, it is a cool looking restaurant. But, that's where the fun ended. The food was mediocre at best and was on the pricey side (being downtown) when you can get a comparable meal for the same price that is much better at neighboring restaurants. The worst aspect was the service: it took at least 10 minutes to get water, and 15 to get it our cocktails. After we ordered our food, we did not see our waiter for at least 35 minutes and it was not overly busy by any means. He then reappeared gave us our check, and disappeared for 20 minutes again. If you want to spend three hours at dinner and have a mediocre meal, this is your place !
Arrived when they opened and were served promptly. Wife had mimosas and I had Red Sunset (cranberry Red Bull, Southern Comfort, Apple Pucker, lime).
Both started with skillet cornbread. Wife ate Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and I had Ten Penny Hash. Both were amazing.
Place was fairly empty at 6:30, reserved table and was was right near busy doorway so had to ask to be moved. Asked for beer or ‘mocktail’ for drivers..nothing! Had worst ginger beer I’ve ever tasted. Not good enough in a bar in 2017 where most people will drive home!
Food took 40 minutes (remember place empty!) all reheated/refried and veggies old and tasteless.
Wouldn’t go back with so much choice in the neighbourhood.
Worse dining experience I have ever had in Pittsburgh. Service was beyond atrocious, food was terrible, waiter was awful. We waited over an hour and a half for our food after we ordered. At one point, a busboy brought out one person's food in one hand and the dirty buspan in another. No manager in sight, no apologies, simply horrendous. Won't go back.
Meh...If you're looking for a bar with decent food this is your place. It's convenient to the Convention Center and downtown so easy walkabout with a lively bar scene. If you're looking for a great meal, this is not the place. it's good value for what you get. The cornbread is a win! Portions are huge.
