Taverna Khione - Brunswick
My wife and I went for New Year's Eve and loved this place. Very authentic Greek food, prepared beautifully in a setting that could be in Greece . Authentically understated - no Greek kitsch here. Great wine selections with limited liquor options but enough to make a good dirty Twenty 2 vodka martini. Our server, Quincy, was delightful. We'll be back soon!
Exceeded our expectations in all respects. Cozy ambiance, excellent creative delicious food
What a delightful find! The service was great - helpful and friendly. And the entrees were really special. The topper was the desserts - wow!
Excellent food and service with a very nice, wine-heavy drink menu. Small menu with plenty of options in a nice, casual and small dining room. Really authentic Greek food - not nouvelle or trendy, just a real experience with thoughtful ingredients. My orzo pilaf with local crabmeat was delicious, albeit a bit salty. The stuffed cabbage was very good, with an unexpected tart sauce. The baked feta encrusted with pistachios and honey was a highlight.
I seldom take the time to write a review but these folks deserved it. Mid 30's couple out for wife's birthday date, kids at home, sitter expenses, etc. - you want to have great food, be able to actually talk to each other, and not get ripped off because you still have a sitter to pay. Can't recommend this any more. We don't consider ourselves snobs (who does?) but we know good food, but in the chicken nugget stage of life, we seldom get to eat it. Great flavors, knowledgeable staff who were unpretentious but know their food and wine.
A charming low-key establishment with OUTSTANDING authentic Greek food. The owner described it best: Pre-WWII Greek village food, like Sunday dinner at Grandma’s with all the aunts helping to cook.
Imaginative chef, knowledgeable servers, interesting specials. It’s a cuisine we don’t often taste in New England
Our second visit was as good as the first, and it gave us a chance to try more of their offerings. We'll be back for a third.
The food was poor in quality and size of portions. It was overpriced. Ended up leaving and going to another restaurant that night. This Greek Restaurant was thought to be a different one in the same town that had great reviews and recommendations. We will not make this mistake twice.
Sadly, the night my mother and I had dinner, Taverna Khione was understaffed, with just one person rushing about, answering phones, bartending, taking orders and bussing tables. Entrees arrived cool-lukewarm (goat & spinach-feta pie), including one with rather damp and unappealing phyllo dough. Also, it'd been nice if there had been some sort of Mediterranean salad (cukes, feta, tomatoes, olives, etc.) on the menu, both for textural contrast to the rest of the offerings and as an additional option for non meat eaters. Good wine, imaginative menu, nice place, just needs a bit of tweaking...
The food was very pricy and overly salty. The salty flavor overpowered the delicate flavor of the fish and duck. I will not go back. Lots of good restaurants in the Portland- Brunswick area.
Truly outstanding food, excellent Mediterranean region wine list, wonderful service, and a comfortable and attractive atmosphere.
The food was a disappointment. The appetizer tasted burnt. The main dish was overly salty, and dessert was runny and watery. Had a very nice wine list, and lovely atmosphere and service.
I've heard good things through my network about this place and it entirely lived up to my high expectations! Excellent food. Nice variety of traditional and nontraditional Greek food. Well prepared, fresh and largely local ingredients. Service attentive without being overbearing. Really high marks all around!
Excellent farm to table special Greek food. Enjoyed the Greek wine too! Thanks Mark!
Great place to dine for Greek food in Brunswick and surrounding area. Very good Greek wine list.
This was our first visit. I am Greek American and was therefore interested in food that was interesting and not the usual fare. There were 4 of us and we ordered a variety of dishes to share. A white Santorini wine went extremely well with the food. The mussels were exceptional as were the zucchini fritters. The octopus was probably our least favorite. For dessert we shared the custard with filo which was very good. Per couple it was less than $50 which is a very good value. We definitely recommend it.
Delicious food, fabulous waitstaff. The sardines were amazing!
We ate here this past weekend, The waitress was very helpful and attentive, the menu was a Prix Fixe , perhaps most Sundays, good selection. Good wine list with many Greek wines. the appetizer's were tasty, mine was much too large, and took half home. My main course was a half Cornish game hen very well cooked with excellent local mushrooms, my wife had the roast pork, which she thought was somewhat cool and her dish could have used more veggies, also bread would have been nice with the meal, it was an app. choice. deserts were very good. Smaller dining room but full and not too noisy, pleasant dining experience.
This place is the real deal, not tired Greek, but superlative Greek food with creativity and local ingredients. Not to be missed!
Our fourth visit in the past year. Each time, it gets better. The food is creative Greek (the chef/owner is Greek descent). The waitstaff is attentive and knowledgeable, without being invasive. Pleasant, cozy small restaurant, good food, good selection of Greek (and domestic) wines, and good value. We'll be back!
Mushroom appetizer (Black trumpet) was terrific. Swordfish was cooked to perfection.
Taverna Khione is my favorite neighborhood dine out. On this particular night the entry (monkfish) was not as good as previous entries, but I account that to my taste. Highly recommend this dinging experience to anyone who appreciates the personal touch in a special evening out.
This is the 2nd time we've eaten at Taverna Khione. Both visits have been excellent. The food is delicious and the service is great. Our server was very helpful with wine and food selections. We had the same one both times and she is really friendly and accommodating. We look forward to many more meals at Taverna Khione. It's so nice to have a good Greek restaurant in the area!
Lovely good, wonderful service and a truly fantastic wine list of Greek wines
We went to celebrate our anniversary and all I can say is the food was terrible! We will not be going back and would never recommend this restaurant to anyone else!
Truly excellent food. All items the three of us ordered from across the menu were very well prepared and presented!! Nice decor. Excellent service. Very authentic Greek cuisine, and of high caliber. And, an excellent Mediterranean regional wine list. We will be back!
The food was delicious and the staff were lovely. I'm already excited to go back!
The lamb dish was inedible. I couldn’t even cut through the meat with the heavy duty steak knife that the server brought out. Otherwise the appetizers were fine and the service friendly.
Excellent food, especially liked the goat ribs special. Warm, helpful staff. Room has a quiet, warm feel to it. It's a bit pricey but good-sized portions. I'll definitely be back.
We enjoyed a "taste of Greece" with this innovative and excellent menu choices; the waitperson was extremely knowledgeable and recommended a nice Greek wine to accompany our meals. We shared two of the "spreads" which was ample, shared the octopus appetizer (which was outstanding) and then had the fish special and the goat; both were very good.
Lovely meal, 4 appetizer dips with yum bread, grilled octopus and whole fish - service was great. No downside whatsoever!!
The Sunday prix fixe dinner was a good deal. Included appetizer, entree and dessert. Good wine selection too.
Delicious food, extremely attentive and kind waitresses who provided good advice in regards to the menu & ordering. Will definitely return and would recommend you try it too!
First visit was memorable. Excellent beet salad to start and delicious stuffed squid and stuffed pork loin. The dessert topped off the meal perfectly. Can’t wait to return!
Wonderful food, excellent wine and great service. A special restaurant.
We had a very nice meal during their Sunday prix fixe menu. The beef tongue with lentils was delicious, as was the stuffed calamari. The portions are fairly hearty and it definitely tasted authentic. Would highly recommend to those in Brunswick and beyond.
This restaurant has been reopened after a several year hiatus. We really enjoyed a somewhat similar menu before. Now, however, the food was very disappointing. Over cooked, over salted and not cheap. Taramasalata was prepared in an unusual way, was not tasty and way too salty. I had rabbit with fettuccini---wrong pasta and rabbit was over cooked. Stuffed grape leaves for dinner and lamb chops were also disappointing and too salty. Walnut cake for dessert was dry and not at room temperature. I feel like whomever was cooking the food did not have much experience. I have a Greek cookbook which has some great recipes. Maybe I'll send a copy to the chef. We will not go again which is really too bad.
Everything about this restaurant is amazing. You cannot go wrong with any of the spread appetizers and my mom and I split the lamb chops and fettuccine and both were absolutely amazing.
Decided to try Taverna Khione after reading a review in our local paper. We went on a Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed the Prix Fixe menu. The dining room is small and intimate, the service was great and the food was delicious ! Be prepared to try some new dishes. I think I have a couple of new favorites !
