Tavern on South Ratings and Reviews
I’ve been to Tavern On South several times for lunch but do not often make it for dinner. My family went on a Saturday night before an event at Lucas Oil. Our server was very friendly and did a good job...but the wait for our food was terrible. Additionally, when my husband and I got our burgers they were basically rare. Considering their proximity to the stadium I would think they would be better equipped to handle large crowds. So - I would recommend lunch when it’s not terribly busy but won’t be going back for dinner any time soon.
I like the atmosphere, the menu and the craft beer selection. there are usually people coming over from Lucas Oil Stadium next door, so be mindful of when there are events going on. we happened to be there when there was high school event so there were several families there.
I suggest that the lights be dimmed a little, but overall it was a very good experience.
At first I was disappointed we were taken upstairs, in less nice, more casual setting. It did not appear full downstairs and we had this reservation for NYE. I wanted to see outside from our table, but our waitress was very good, and it ended up being very enjoyable. Good food.
Food was good but not outstanding, beverage service was quick, waiter was distracted but attended to us just enough for us to get our food, he was not overly friendly nor helpful with the drink or food menu. Host at door was rude ---- I had made a reservation via Open Table for 6:45pm Saturday. My party of 4 arrived at 6:30pm. There were about 10 patrons waiting to be seated. When I approached the host to let him know we had arrived, he stated "Oh, so you're the group that just popped up on my screen! You weren't supposed to be able to get into Open Table that quickly. I guess I'll go ahead and seat you anyway." Excuse me?! Am I to blame for Open Table software performance?? There was no 'Welcome to Tavern on South", "Glad you're here." I doubt that I will return to Tavern on South very soon. The food just didn't overwhelm me.
We were seated on the covered patio which was bitter cold. They told us they had the heat on but it was 20 degrees outside and maybe 40 inside. It took forever for someone to wait on us. We ordered food which also took an extremely long time and food was cold once we got it. They swiped the other family's bill on our credit card and viceversa. When we talked to the manager about all the issues no apology whatsoever. Never coming back!
We were visiting from out of town. I made our reservations online. When we arrived the hostess started walking up a staircase. I told her that my mom had 3 knee surgeries and asked if we could have a table downstairs. She said they were full. I asked if there was an elevator and she said no. There was no attempt to make any accommodations. We had no choice due to time restrictions, but to stay. My mom had to struggle up the stairs. I was truly disappointed in the lack of accessibility.
We ordered the crab cakes (good, some shell pieces, but still better than too much bread,) and the bison burger (served rare as requested, nice size and delicious.) I enjoyed the house salad that had a nice vinaigrette...and not too much of it. Our waiter recommended a nice local craft brew as well. Our only problem was the waiter adamantly stating that the kitchen would not honor any substitutions on the menu. We are trying to eat low carb, and did not want the French fries or the bun that came with the bison burger. Since we were only asking for a vegetable instead of fries, this seemed absurd. He did come back and stated that they could do a side salad instead of the fries. This was at a cost of an additional $7. So just be aware what no bun and no fries will cost you!
Slow service and wrong orders. Ordered sweet potato fries and got regular, ordered tiramisu after waitress offered and it is not on the menu and want notified until the rest of us were almost done with ours. Pricey for portion size.
Bartender was a little snubbish as well. Like we were inconveniencing her with our order.
My wife and I ate here on a Friday after the sufgestion of a friend. What we found was that it was incredibly overpriced for food that is subpar. Paid ten dollars for a lousy cheeseburger and then found out they charged me two dollars more for french fries. Wife had a crab cake sandwich but only ate half becuase it was more cake than crab and had asparagus on the side which we had to pay extra for again. Nowhere does it mention that the food is a la carte. Their draught beer selection is good, and they do offer deals on certain nights. The ambiance is nice, seems family friendly, but be prepared to pay out a large amount for your family. Place seemed to be hurting for customers as we were there till almost 9 on a Friday night and they were fairly dead for a restaurant.
Filet Mignon Meatloaf was terrible. Two people at our table ordered it. It was like a soggy veggie burger consistency. There's no way it was sliced from a meatloaf. For the price of it, $21...it wasn't a good size either. It was inedible & both sent them back. The other two people filets med well. One was served med & the other med rare. The med rare was sent back. All ordered Caesar salads...they were ok. Everyone had brown pieces of romaine in theirs. No replacement meals were ordered...appetites were lost. The only meal eaten was the medium filet. Drinks were the best part. The 3 meals were comped, but nothing else.
Very, very disappointed in our LAST visit to Tavern of South. We had been before and loved it, but this time...horrible. We had reservations and we sat for several minutes before our waiter greeted us. To make up for it he offered us a free app. Shrimp martini. It was nasty. The shrimp had some weird mushy texture when you bit into it, and had no taste at all. I ordered the Filet Meatloaf and my wife the Crab Cake sandwich. Hers was bland and tasted like it was a thawed out crab patty from a discount grocery store. Mine, which I had ordered before and was fantastic, this time was cold, the chili sauce was cold, and the mashed potatoes were cold it was all very gross and we were extremely disappointed. We normally would have sent it all back but we had additional commitments and did not have the time to do so. So we ate our gross $50 meal and left very disappointed.
The service was decidedly okay. The noise was kinda loud, but we chose the outside seating so I can't fault them too much. It's possible they were short staffed, but our server was not particularly attentive and kept coming back to inform us that things were not available.
I met a friend for dinner who I had not seen for a while, so we wanted a quiet spot where we could hear each other talk. We sat next to the front windows, where it was quiet for a few minutes, but within an hour there was a loud guy sitting right behind us who bellowed. The restaurant also got very loud as it filled up due to the acoustics in the main room. We arrived before 5:30 on a weeknight; I guess next time we should be earlier and get out faster!
My pasta was cooked well and was a large portion, but it was extremely bland--no seasonings at all beyond some pine nuts. I had to keep putting salt and pepper on it.
We did not stay for dessert due to the noise.
Our waiter was somewhat inattentive and detached.
I will only return when I need a convenient spot to meet friends halfway between my home and their offices.
