Tavern & Grocery
I booked a table for my birthday on Open Table but the restaurant didn’t get the reservation. Happily, they accommodated us without question on a very busy Friday night. Despite a long wait, the food was outstanding and the service friendly, if overwhelmed. The manager noticed our wait, and proactively reached out to make sure we were happy. Thank you for making what could have been a very poor experience into a delightful dinner.
Limited wine by glass and limited dessert selection.
Service was confused and slow. We were not sure who our server actually was thought our experience. Asked for the check and when it arrived it was wrong, again it took some time to flag a server down to correct it!
Menu read pretty well needs help on the execution many the thinnest, tasteless hollandaise I’ve ever had on both the Benedict and the hash? The culinary team is trying they just don’t appear to have the skills.
It’s a shame as we loved the atmosphere, exposed brick wood table makes for a great vibe!
The food and drink were great. It was pretty high energy and we enjoyed our time talking and watching everything and everyone. Will definitely return!
The server forgot about my table - twice. I had to ask to order drinks - twice and had to ask to order dinner, then to order dessert, then get the bill. Then the bill was wrong. It was so incredibly loud that me and my friend were sitting next to each other almost shouting. Luckily it was our monthly girls get together and neither of us were in a hurry. The food was good, but extremely pretentious and the portion sizes were ridiculous. I love pretentious food - but it was a bit much. I won't be back...
I went to Tavern & Grocery for the first time during Restaurant week. The food was delicious and creative. There were 4 of us and we all tried different things. I had a lovely farro salad with pesto and heirloom tomatoes, mushroom risotto, and an outstanding smoked chocolate budino. Everything was a taste treat. I definitely want to go back and try the full menu. The inside is a bit loud due to the exposed brick, but it's very cool and their is a speakeasy downstairs.
The only downside was that our waiter kept reaching across the table in front of two (in the face of) of our party to reach the other two, rather than going around. Seating is a bit tight, but it was annoying.
The appetizers - corn-peach gazpacho and halibut ceviche - were wonderful. A chicken breast dish and a salmon dish were both quite good, but not special. The desserts - a plum parfait and I frankly don't remember what the other was- were both superb.
Visited during restaurant week. Had pre dinner cocktails at Lost Saint. Dinner was fabulous.
This was a great local and fresh food experience in a wonderful old Charlottesville building.
The menu is creative and exquisitely well prepared. We double dated and enjoyed many dishes that we split among us: all was perfect!
Service is attentive!
A place to recommend! Well worth the price!
Read the reviews from others on open table, Made reservations in advance, This is a neat older revived place, Table was just big enough Eat off of for two. Kinda sat in the middle but glad we did since it was under A/C.
Listen to and ordered what the waitress recommended and it was spot on. The food was Very exceptional. Did not expect this good of a meal from here, cocktails were also very enjoyable.
Nice place to enjoy a meal ! Roughly 100 bucks but well worth it.
Thank you Chef
Wonderfully prepared food. Excellent wait staff. All in all we fully expect to return!
Delicious and so charming!
This was our first time here. In a city with a lot of brunch options this one stands out. The food was delicious. Coming back for dinner soon!
Delicious food - service/server was slow and somewhat inattentive. Had to ask for coffee refills and creamer multiple times eventually had to ask someone else. Brunch menu is affordable and tasty!
Delicious meal, great service, and nice ambiance. Was relatively slow considering it was a Saturday night. The foie-gras and duck was cooked to perfection. Absolutely delicious.
I wanted to turn my nose up at the snooty menu and unusually expensive food. But I can't deny that our meal, while insanely pricey, was beautifully prepared and presented and very, very tasty. I'm rarely in a position to drop this kind of money for a night out, and I'm still not sure that even the excellent food we got was commensurate to the price we paid. Still, if you go here, you'll come away having enjoyed a superb meal.
Can't wait to go back
The eggs were unbelievable, both in the soft scramble and the eggs Benedict. They were actually light and fluffy and so delicious.
Our service was a bit slow...but it was not the servers fault. There just wasn't enough staff on at the time. We will definitely go back soon!
I have dined at Tavern and Grocery several times since Ashley Sieg Williams purchased this restaurant and it has been a wonderful experience every time. The food and presentation is amazing and the ingredients are fresh and seasonal! I love the atmosphere on the main floor for dining and the service is always excellent. I like to go to the downstairs bar to Lost Saint to see Billy for a night cap. This is the perfect way to end a wonderful evening.
Had Sunday Brunch with my daughter.
We reserved the seat then got called by the hostess to say we would have to sit outside. No problem. Then we had to ask for a server because no one came. The manager had to come take our order. So we only got checked on once. Then had to ask for our check, twice because the first one was not ours. Food is great. But hard to be under staffed on a Friday and say you didn’t expect it.
Nice little find with great food and friendly service! Will be back!
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Tavern and Grocery. Service was prompt and the food quality was excellent. We will be back!
Very attractive restaurant. Windows on all sides and nice interior. The food is very pretty. Lots of colors and displayed beautifully. The vegetables taste very fresh and plentiful. There are very pretty sauces to accompany the dishes. Everything tastes good, but nothing we had was great. The staff is very friendly.
Celebration for a young friend’s graduation. Food was excellent and wait staff was helpful and didn’t rush us.
The quality of the food is excellent, and the service was good. However, the prices are high and the portions are small, not a good value. However, the larger complaint is the ambiance. If they are going to serve “fine dining” caliber food, they ought to have an atmosphere to match. They have crammed so many tables into a small room that it is hard to get in and out without bumping into other diners. With most or all of those tables occupied, the noise level is overwhelming, and the room is very warm. It could be so much nicer.
Great graduation brunch!
Graduation/ Screw your custom weekend.
Good food, convenient location, beautiful building, but average service.
Had a lovely dinner thank you. Cocktails were delightful and the scallops were nice
This was my first visit to The Tavern & Grocery, and we were thrilled. The staff was great and the food was marvelous. I highly recommend the cavatelli and mushroom risotto. Every bite was delicious and I can't wait to go back.
We went in for Sunday breakfast with friends. We had reservations for 11:45 and were promptly seated. The service was outstanding as was the food. This is one of our favorite places for Sunday breakfast.
The quantity was less. Food was good.
Very nice patio seating.
First time patron. Overall very nice. Food was very good. Cocktails are over the top! Would recommend
Very good food, but service extremely slow. Ate there on a Saturday evening. Nice ambience and
pleasant server, but it took 50 minutes to get our main course. If you go there, don't have anything to get to after dinner, or give yourself an extra hour.
Our burgers were not cooked as ordered. They were delicious but all cooked the same way, medium well, when ordered medium and medium rare. Fries were great. We were first seated by the door and the server accidentally knocked a glass of water into my lap and off the table. Staff graciously moved us to a different table. Thank you.
It was wonderful for brunch!
