What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.5

Tartine Manufactory in the Mission is a huge operation with excellent pastries, coffee, and ice cream, and dinner as well.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

A long time fan of Tartine Bakery, recently moved to SF and decided to come here for a large family birthday dinner with guests visiting from afar. It did not disappoint! The set menu was delicious, the recommended wines were perfect and the service was attentive but more importantly delightful. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Would highly recommend!

Only the food was noteworthy; service was good but everything else was unacceptable -- noise, seat comfort, bathrooms, prices, ambience.

Eclectic and tasty cuisine. The dips should be investigated when dining here. Surprisingly for the bakery affiliation, the bread does not come with meal. The food was tasty. While we are not vegetarians, highly recommend ordering the durum tagliatelle. Rather loud and bosterous and packed. This is clearly a millenial hangout. Highly recommend.

Tartine Manufactory was very good. Everything we had we enjoyed. Our server was friendly and helpful. The appetizers were all bread based which we didn't know, but they were tasty. It is pricey and you have to pay $6.00 for three pieces of bread, which was too much in my book.

Lovely setting. Food was delish. Portions were on the small side. The most surprising thing was paying $6 for 3 slices of their amazing bread when you can get an entire loaf for $10. Next time I'll order a loaf to go and rip off a chunk rather than getting ripped off myself.

Our group of 4 visited Tartine Manufactory for dinner on a Friday night. As a native Californian who relocated to the East Coast (and having been a Tartine enthusiast for years), I very much look forward to this visit, but our entire group was left sorely disappointed. Our waiter was pretentious from the very beginning. After we made one request for extra time to make our food choices, we were left waiting for a very long time to place our order. In fact, it felt that he deliberately avoided eye contact while passing by so that we could be left waiting. Because this happened after my husband sought recommendations for cocktails, but ended up _politely_ choosing a drink that was not among the waiter's two recommendations, we wondered if we were punished for doing so. We had no options but to seek the attention of other members of the staff in order to place our order, after which our waiter promptly returned to our table, and said in an indifferent tone with flat facial affect, "thank you for informing my manager." The menu was a mix of cold (e.g., salad), warm / room temperature (e.g., tartines), and warm (e.g., pasta) plates; it was somewhat disorienting when our salad came after our pasta. One of the dishes was only brought to us after a lengthy wait and two inquiries. Because of the long wait, we were unable to finish our dinner (1 order of pickles, 1 order of bread, 1 order of eggplant dip, 1 tartine, 1 salad, 1 order of pork ribs, 1 order of miso hoisin duck, 1 order of pasta) in 2.5 hours. Sadly, one member of our party was pregnant and had gestational diabetes; she was extremely uncomfortable with the very long dinner. We also missed dessert and paid in a mad rush immediately after the duck was presented and rapidly consumed, as our dining companions had a train to catch. Aside from the manager who took our order, nobody apologized for the mishaps throughout the night. I felt horrible that I subjected my friends and family to this unpleasant experience.

The problem is the expectation is so hard to meet given the level of pastry and bread the Chad Robertson produces. It's a bakery that does decent food for dinner but charges higher end prices and has service that falls flat. The best dishes were the bread and butter (of course), bone broth with turmeric, burrata, and Tagliatelle. The scallops were fine but for $37 it should have been really good. All told we got 1 drink each 5 dishes no dessert for $200 plus tip. If the prices were about 10% less and the service cared 10% more this would be a great spot.

We decided to sit at the bar rather than a table (seemed more intimate). The bar was spacious and we had plenty of room but the service at the bar was less than what one would expect. Did we have to try a little too hard to catch the attention of the staff to order food? Yes. Even worse, while we were still eating the decidedly beautiful food, the bar staff began what I would consider an after-closing cleanup, lifting up the bar grates right in front of us and cleaning all the muck below. Who wants to see that while eating?! The staff was way more concerned with cleaning and closing than they were with customer service. It was similar to "last call" at a bar...and it wasn't even 10PM yet. Tacky for an upscale restaurant to make you feel like it's time to leave by conducting major cleaning right in front of you.

The food was not warm, the service was not responsive or welcoming, and the ribs were so mushy. I was so sad! I love Tartine Bakery and wished this was as great as their flagship!

I am a devotee of Chad Robertson and a baker using his books. Always love and am inspired by his bread! Manufactory has long been one of my Top Three favorite restaurants in SF. This past meal elevated it to #1! We went on y birthday and everything I had was exquisite. Delicious, unique, lovely presentation, perfect portion size, and really nice service. Can't recommend the place highly enough! With you had more stars!

Based on yelp & other sites, I was expecting to be blown away. As a foodie, I found the selections/preparation/taste to be average.
The website describes the attire as “business casual” so we dressed accordingly. Not sure in what universe do sneakers, jeans, T-shirt &/or shorts fit “business casual”attire! Don’t care if they’re Hermès (NOT!!)
On a positive note, our server was very attentive!

The best thing about Tartine Manufactory was the service, personable but unobtrusive. Food was o.k. but nothing stood out. Certainly not worth the hype. If you go at the dinner hour, be prepared for it to be too loud to comfortably hear your dining companion or the person next to you on the bar stool. Honestly, the best thing about dinner was the bread and butter. Everything else was meh.

Food started out strong -- great apps and second plates that we shared. Entrees were disappointing & overpriced. Then we waited nearly an hour to have anyone ask us about dessert, and that was after the waitress forgot a dish. Dessert was similar subpar -- I've had much better here on prior visits.

We were really looking forward to an evening at Tartine M but were disappointed in the food....scallop dish was lacking and the burrata & chard was nice but nothing memorable. Waiter didn’t seem to care that I left half the scallop meal untouched....chicken dish very good and generous serving (good thing, as my husband shared it with me) . We were seated towards back of resto so that my husband got to look at a wall w door...why couldn’t we sit in main area where there were tables to spare?

I'll leave the details on food to the other reviewers. We dine here frequently and agree with the comments on the dishes. We come here because we love the food, sopping the bread into the ricotta or eggplant dips, soups, even the lamb ragout tagines. On our most recent visit we had a wonderful server. I'm going to mention this because it's the same comment I seem to hear from other acquaintences and our own personal experience: the hosting is always inconsistent. Rarely have we ever been greeted by someone at the stand...it's a flag down situation. Rarely do we ever get the seat we want even though we have reserved in advance. I watched two other patrons turn down the table we were given... there were plenty of other plum tables available.
Again, we come here for the food, but truly wish other aspects of Tartine were well rounded as well so we could heartily support the experience!

Ambiance was beautiful, food was good, but the service was frustrating; especially with our waitress. Took her 10 minutes before acknowledging me at the table. Our drinks order took way too long and when we were ready to order another round, it took 20 minutes before she told us something ran out and then another 20 minutes to bring our actual drinks. We would have liked to stay longer, but the lack of interests and service turned us off. We went to Trick Dog instead for more libations.

Food was to die for!! We had an excellent server who gave us tips on what to order. We ended up getting country bread and butter (100% MUST...best part of the meal; ended up buying a whole loaf to take home), marinated artichokes, burrata, steak tartar, ribs, scallops, tagliatelle, chocolate cake, and tres leches cake. We split this and had some wine between 4 people and it was the perfect meal! Hopeful to return soon!

Everything we had was delicious. We started with the little gem salad, which had an interesting dressing made with tahini. Next we had the lamb meatballs, which had a nice spiciness due to the aleppo, I think. Then we had the pasta with morel mushrooms. The sauce had a nice lemony flavor. Finally we had the chocolate cake. Heavenly! The service was not as attentive as it could have been, but we liked the ambiance.

Lives up to the great reviews. Great, amazing Tartine bread -- definitely order the bread spreads -- and incredibly fresh, seasonal ingredients. Our servers were very knowledgeable and right on top of what was in short supply from the kitchen. This was key, because we had an early reservation (6pm, the last one available for the day we could go!), and some things were not available. That's okay -- we'll be going back soon! Miscellaneous notes: leave time to find a parking space if you drive; the noise level varied and tended to be on the loud side (understandable because the space is a former warehouse, high ceilings, lots of windows, not much insulation); loved the interior design, the tables, chairs, and tableware.

While the food was ok, the staff from the hostess to the server were completely uninterested in us as guests. Dismissive, curt, rude. Treated us like they were doing us a favor to seat us and serve us. Very disappointing.
