Tao Uptown Ratings and Reviews
The food was fantastic, but unfortunately it seems Tao is becoming more of a tourist attraction. Definitely fun and great energy, but be prepared to wait at least an hour from the time of your reservations. If you're looking for a romantic meal this isn't your place, but if you're looking to get your night started I'd recommend Tao.
I didnt appreciate the rude hostess and the fact that my reservation was for 9:15 and i didnt get seated until 10:20. I had to go ask the hostess twice about my reservation. We were seated in the lounge watching groups get seated that had just walked in and the lounge was becoming empty.
As a tourist i really had high expectations in this place and in its Asian food. in spite of our reservation we waited for obout 1 hour to take a seat, the music was too loud (seemed a night club instead of a restaurant) and the food is all precooked and really bad.
We waited an hour for our table with a reservation. This is after they called me to confirm the reservation and told me they would cancel it if we were more than 15 minutes late. The bar was small and cramped for the size of the restaurant and the number of people waiting. The noise level is ridiculous; you can't even hear yourself think. The atmosphere is really cool and the food is delicious but I will never return.
I think the seating was awful. We basically sat right on top of others. We were their for our anniversary and it was nothing romantic about it. To make it worse the waiters had to lean up against my husband to take orders from the tables next to us which was very strange. The food was fresh and delicious but the seating made it not so perfect experience.
I've travelled the world and have dined in many fine restaurants of every description. Tao is extremely unique. Its a restaurant I will never forget. The ambience is one of a kind. Everything about it was excellent. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in NYC.
Reservation was at 8:45 and we got seated at 9:30. Be prepare to wait for at least 1/2hr even if you have reservation. Food is pricey but we expected given the reputation. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Overall, it was a nice experience for my friends who never been there.
We ordered an appetizer (edamame--spelling?) that for some reason was served at the same time of our entree, so we canceled the appetizer. From that moment, the waitress seemed to ignore us; however, the manager came to our table and apologized for the error. I really think the manager should have comp'd a dessert or something.
Visited twice and both times the place is always packed. Good selection of appetizers. Sharing is encouraged. Sushi is amazing. Main dishes were good a bit too salty for me but delicious nontheless.. Great vibe, good music. Make sure to have the molten chocolate cake with the yummy coconut icecream
Overall everything was good, though I expected alot more from Tao. Our waiter brought out most of our food at one time and then took away one of our plates while we were eating. Just as soon as we received new plates, the main course arrived, leaving no time to digest. Way too fast!
My friend wanted to go out for sushi and drinks for her birthday, so, since this wasn't my first time at Tao, I made sure we had a reservation. We showed up on time for our reservation (10:15) so we were surprised when they handed us a buzzer and told us to just have a drink at the bar until it went off. Downstairs was packed as usual so we went upstairs and on our way we noticed an empty table and joked to each other we should just let them know we found a table. Needless to say we waited for an HOUR - only to be seated at the very same table that had been empty the entire time! The food and drinks and waitress were all good and we had a great time but seriously, what's the point of making reservations?! No clue what they're doing.
Was a great experience. I recommend that you have some type of cooperation with the Club a across the street, which is co-owned by Tao owners, to give easy access through a voucher to the club. That way you can increase late dinning revenues (i.e., 11 pm -midnight)and even keep the 2nd floor still occupied by doing this rather than shutting it down. We had a great time at the club as well but waiting in the line is a hassle.
