Tao Downtown Ratings and Reviews
Let me start the review of this restaurant by saying I’ve been to both TAO uptown and downtown many times previous to this reservation.
We arrived on time for our reservation and was seated promptly. We waited over 15 minutes and no one even showed up to our table to bring us a glass of water. My girlfriend and I tried to get the attention of several waiters, but no one paid any attention to us. One waitress looked at us and then turned and walked away. The service is absolutely atrocious at TAO Downtown. You could not pay me to sit down at TAO Downtown. Management is non-existent at TAO Downtown.
We left the restaurant and on the way out stopped at the hostess desk to let them know we were leaving. I asked for the manager and they said he was walking around somewhere. At no point did anyone attempt to alert the manager to the fact we were walking out because no one came to our table for over 15 minutes. No one asked for our name or phone number or an opportunity to correct the situation. This is because the people working at TAO Downtown are not professional and are not properly trained in restaurant management / customer service.
New York City is filled with amazing restaurants and the management of TAO should realize people do have a choice. I’m making my experience known to friends, family and business associates.
At the end of the day people have a choice, but at least I have made an honest attempt to provide accurate feedback about an absolutely atrocious restaurant experience at TAO.
I hope this review helps people make a choice!
Well, I've always said I wanted to try a Dining in the Dark experience - I just didn't realize it would be tonight! The restaurant was very dark and very loud. We couldn't see any of what we were eating. I actually pulled out my phone to have a look at our meal.
As for the food, it was just alright. It was about on par with P.F Changs, but triple the price. Our server was slow, although the food came quickly once we were able to order it.
The decor was nice, but one of the big decor pieces we had come to see was decorated with someone's tacky birthday decorations.
All in all, the place is a tourist trap. It felt like it was trying so hard to be trendy that it just felt kind of needy. You would get a much better meal from almost any vendor across the street at the Chelsea Market.
Card was taken to hold reservation, table wasn’t ready until OVER an hr later. Was expecting to celebrate a really special occasion, unfortunately, Tao obviously couldn’t accommodate.. so I had to quickly find another restaurant. WE MISSED the plans we had after dinner. Unfortunately, I will not be returning nor recommending this place to anyone. There were 12 hostesses standing around, you’d think at least one would have a common courtesy to at least call to let me know they are behind so I could decide if I still wanted to dine in or not.
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday this past weekend and we had such a great time. When I made the reservation I requested the Birthday fortune cookie ahead of time so my boyfriend would be surprised. I appreciated that I didn’t have to remind them during the dinner and the surprise wasn’t ruined. The food came out quickly even though it was very busy, and our waitress made great suggestions when ordering food and drinks. We live in the city so we will definitely be back!
Overall we had a good time as we usually do when we dine at Tao, however the wait to be seated was a very long 40 minute wait. We had reservations for 10:30 pm and were not seated until after 11:10 pm. I was very displeased by this as they are constantly reminding you of your upcoming reservation with them and give you a 15 min grace period. I would expect to be seated upon arrival or at least 10-15 minutes after. Our food was delicious, however my glass of prosecco was on the flat side. Anyway I always enjoy the lively ambiance of Tao, which is another reason I enjoy and return to dinning there.
Tao is an experience ebmvetyone must try once. From minute you walk in, walk down the stairs into the main dining area and then to your seat...all of your senses experience something really incredible and unique.
My Daughter wanted to have her 18th birthday there and Tao exceeded expectations...
Great service...food...a must. Thank you!
Atmosphere was electric and lively yet not too loud for table conversations. The food was unbelievable and the plating superb. If you are in NYC, you have to eat here. About $50-60 per person with no alcohol and worth every dollar. Young, professional crowd looking their best.
I have to say that I was disappointed! We visited NY for the holidays and had one dinner date night that we really wanted to enjoy! The atmosphere and decor is really nice and unique but the food was not better than any other casual Chinese/Thai place in NY. Everything was too sweet and just OK. Ended up having some appetizers in the bar down the block after our dinner there. ;(
Service ruined the night. Our waiter brought the food and we couldn’t find them again for over an hour. I asked repeatedly for refills from other waiters around and no one seemed to care. We physically had to get up find somewhere to pay and left nearly 1.5 hours with no interaction from our waiter.
