Designed by Rockwell Group, TAO Downtown offers a distinct sense of arrival and discovery and is the first TAO venue where guests descend into a multi-level space. The subterranean restaurant, located in the heart of Chelsea, is intended to look and feel as if it has been there for decades and only unearthed recently to reveal the artifacts within. Upon arrival, guests immediately encounter a long corridor with a dragon scale patterned screen and Chinese calligraphy murals mounted on weathered brick walls.

    We had a great time in Tao! Very nice for any special occasion! Food is good, but the atmosphere is outstanding! Will come again.

    A wonderful experience for dining. Our second visit. Will return again for sure. We are early and the atmosphere was more subdued. But the vibe when it is busier is nice too.

    Me and my girlfriend went to the tao downtown New York location and it was awful. We have been to multiple toas across the country and nothing compared to this one. The food was awful, Service was bad we were the first people there and they were catering more to the guests that had arrived after us. It Took a whole hour for our food to come. I was really excited for the yellowtail jalapeño but it was so pink and fishy tasteing nothing like the other tao locations. First I had a mango chili cocktail (which I’ve had before) it was so bad I had to return it. Then I had white wine which smelled like armpit I didn’t even drink it. Disappointed don’t know if I’ll ever be able to visit any Tao ever again. Super disappointed

    Prob the best restaurant we went to in NY. Food was great. We had potstickers, orange chicken , lobster friend rice and filet mignon, every thing was yummy. My husband originally ordered the wagu but it wasn’t good so the server let him change it to fillet mignon and it was great! Our server was wonderful, the music was great! It’s pricey, I think it was $20/drink so we didn’t order one. For 2 people we paid $150, no dessert or drinks.

    The food was generally superb, although the Peking Duck very disappointing, and the wait staff helpful for one member of our party with severe food allergies. That was important to us, but otherwise the wait staff was generally inattentive and disappointing. My gratuity never reflects that since I consider that party of my expected costs, but does factor into return visit decisions.

    The server was not the best, he took so long to take our orders and wasn't patient. They had an issue with the kitchen after the server finally came to take our orders and that made us miss out on what we wanted to get. The little food we got was good

    The food was good but a bit pricy. The most outstanding was the enviorment. Tao is decorated very beautifully and I would love to visit again.

    Pricey but great food. Seating for 2 can put you in a cramped position where you can hear the conversations of the pairs of people to your left and right which was not great and is the only concern I had. The waiter was great, frequently visiting which I appreciate very much as I didn't ever have to wait very long to request something new. Food was amazing.

    I went for my birthday and overall the experience was good aside from the fact that the $20 deposit wasn’t taken out of my bill like the reservation stated. Also, they don’t do complimentary ice cream or any type of dessert for birthdays…you have to purchase your own. The pork fried rice was good but it did get a little salty after awhile, overall the experience was decent. Beautiful amb

    Food was quite good. Restaurant is beautiful. The DJ was strange in an upscale restaurant like this and the music was way too loud. The whole place seemed to be more about the spectacle and who's there rather than being particularly about the food. Overall, there are other better places to go in NYC.

    Waitress was unfriendly and not helpful. Charged $20 for the reservation and was told it would be refunded. It was not refunded. Food was delicious. A little on the pricey side.

    We celebrated Father’s Day at Tao. We’ve eaten at Tao many times before, the food just wasn’t as great as usual. Slightly disappointed.

    We were seated 25 minutes after our reservation time. I rarely mind that except when the restaurant itself makes a major deal about not holding reservations. I get it. I did my part and I was on time. Now you do your part and expect the same of your staff as you do of your customers.
