Designed by Rockwell Group, TAO Downtown offers a distinct sense of arrival and discovery and is the first TAO venue where guests descend into a multi-level space. The subterranean restaurant, located in the heart of Chelsea, is intended to look and feel as if it has been there for decades and only unearthed recently to reveal the artifacts within. Upon arrival, guests immediately encounter a long corridor with a dragon scale patterned screen and Chinese calligraphy murals mounted on weathered brick walls.

    My reservation is dely up to 45 min and does not respect the time when you arrive even for the other people. I hate this delay and in future i will not plan to book again

    We weren’t given a table until 10pm when our reservation was for 9pm. Then we get to our table and our server barely paid attention to us. So barely saw anyone who worked there besides a bouncer who sat and watched our table for a good 15 minutes because we had a little cannon camera and he was worried we’d use flash. He forgot an appetizer and forgot to take it off the bill… we had to remind him multiple times. But the food was absolutely incredible!!! Also the girl at the bar upstairs while we waited for our table was so amazing and helped us pick cocktails out when one of us wasn’t sure what to order. Also music was killer.

    We had an 8:30 reservation but weren’t seated until 9:00 — no apology, no explanation. Once we finally sat down, the service was rushed to the point of being uncomfortable. Plates were cleared the moment we finished, as if we were being pushed out to make room for the next party. For a restaurant that markets itself as upscale and charges accordingly, the service was shockingly poor. It felt transactional, not hospitable. Dining here felt more like being processed than welcomed. For the price and reputation, I expected far better. I won’t be returning — and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a quality experience

    I am allergic to gluten. I made sure to tell the waiter a few times about it. He claimed he noted it in the order. Our appetizers came out and I double checked with the waiter if it was modified to be gluten free. It was. We asked to verify the dinner I ordered and he said they can modify it. While I was a quarter through my entree the waiter comes back and says “your dish is not gluten free - let me make you another one”. I already ate it. He didn’t even apologize and then admitted he never noted that the entree needed to be gluten free. The manager came over and I explained to her how sick I will be today because I consumed it. She was very understanding and they did their best to make us feel better (mentally). She gave me her business card so we can call today if I get really sick. But the negligence of a waiter to not put in extra care for an allergy is absurd. We will never be going back.

    Had a reservation for 10:15 pm, took 30 minutes to be seated. Server was inattentive Ambiance & food terrific Service for late dinner , great option.

    Today for my birthday, the waiter was extremely rude to us. We ordered our food and drinks right away but he left us without refilling our drinks or checking back in with us. Food wasnt served until an hour later after we were seated. When I asked him whats going on, he said “oh well were a big restaurant, this is what happens”… another waitress was really nice to us. Food was good but not worth me taking a risk to give them $200-$300 and receive this poor service
