Tanta Ratings and Reviews
My 2 scallops were incredibly disappointing as provided to me on a literally bed of rocks, bathed in parmesan soup rather than the foam indicated on the menu. The kitchen closes sharply at 10 and the wait staff were stretched to thin to even come and inquire about the food until it was too late to order something else
We really enjoyed the food which was eclectic and delicious. We ended up ordering two small plates and two large plates for two of us. We were fairly hungry but that was more then we needed and in fact we took one of the large plates home pretty much uneaten. Next time, we'll go with two small plates and share a large. Wait staff was excellent as well, very knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. They have a great location near all the action in downtown Chicago. We walked a couple of blocks to a disco club and had a great time dancing off our meal.
Absolutely incredible and authentic tasting Peruvian food with a very classy touch. It was our anniversary and we were welcomed by everyone in the restaurant and even surprised by a couple of glasses of champagne!! Can’t speak highly enough of this place. We’ll be back!!
We were seated right away. 2 folks were missing from our party of four but we were still offered our table. Nice touch. Food was great. The shrimps in my dish were BIG! Everyone enjoyed their meals and the service. A fantastic experience. Definitely coming back!
Every single dish we ordered (whether appetizer or main dish) was so delicious. There were five of us and we ordered different things to share; and then each person ordered their own main dish. Some of the dishes are very abundant. Really delicious; if you are doubting whether to come here or not; do not doubt for a second. You will not be disappointed.
Tanta not only has irresistible food, but good service and a fun and casual approach to the entire experience. We are returning soon with friends. The plantain chips that are placed on the table after you order are to die for! We can't get enough of them. The Peruvian chicken dish is delicious and a huge value. It is more than enough for 4 people. That leaves the appetizers, which are also delicious. We cannot wait to return and try more of them!
This was my third visit in a year (I live 150 miles away). The food is ecstatically good.
Better than its flagship namesake in Lima! Just amazing taste sensations.
The ambience is negatively affected by the high noise level (I would call it "loud,"
not "energetic"). I know it's popular for restaurants to design their space to augment
the sound of diners talking, but it's a huge drawback for anybody over 50.
Delicious food and cocktails (get a pisco sour). The flavor profiles of Peruvian food are very different from anything I have tasted. The menu is large and anyone should be able to find something they would enjoy. The server also mentioned that the menu is seasonal, which would encourage return trips. I know I will be a repeat customer.
Went for a lunch with colleagues on a Tuesday. The food was great, albeit the service was a little slower than I would have expected for how non-busy it was. I had one of the ceviches and the chufa - both of which were delicious and the latter of which was very generously portioned.
Way way way way way too loud in this place. You cannot even talk to your dinner guests without screaming ... which is what everyone in the restaurant does. Not sure why the acoustics are so terrible, but you literally cannot hear yourself talk unless you are yelling. It's a shame because the food is good (portions very small for the price).
The food is great but the problem is the service, which is very inconsistent. I've been there several times and some days you're treated really well, other times your server could care less. Very disappointing. Also they need to do something about the noise level. It's impossible to have a quiet conversation or even hear what your friends are saying.
Tanta is one of my favorites- I’ve been there nearly a dozen times over the years and have referred numerous other folks there since it’s one of the best restaurants in town IMHO. Tonight’s food was as spectacular as ever...every plate you order is unique and delicious. The service is also usually exceptional...but that was not the case tonight. It was fortunate that I had been there before and could advise the other guests in my party of favorites....b/c our waiter didn’t bother to even provide an overview of the menu, let alone any recommendations. Very disappointing. In addition, I had to flag him down to finally place a drink order for a second cocktail. The final blow was when he refused to split the bill himself — and instead demanded that we do the math to tell him how much to put on the two credit cards. Sad - and lazy - after we had spent this much money on a meal. To top it off, it’s not like the place was packed. There were open tables throughout the night. It’s a good thing this wasn’t my first experience here or I might not be back. Bottom line, the food continues to be top notch but the service has taken a huge step backwards.
We were visiting Chicago and since we are fans of Peruvian food we went to Tanta based on its international reputation. We ordered Pisco Sours anticuchos, cebiche clasico, causita clasica and picarones. The Pisco Sours were absolutely delicious, perfectly balanced! The most disappointing dish was the Causita Clasica where a very tart crab salad was piled over a thin layer of tart, overly moist potatoes. It was inedible. In addition, there was no balance in the proportion of crab salad to potatoes. The picarones were dense and lacked the lightness of a well-prepared picaron. It was edible but far from memorable.
The food was delightful with the choice of ceviches impressive. The one we chose, criollo, was spot on and there was the right amount to enjoy the flavor without getting tired of it. The a lo pobre beef entree was both traditional and interesting with the accents and was cooked perfectly. Great piscos to start and a glass of red with the beef from a small but solid wine by the glass menu. The service was efficient but curiously, entirely disinterested. From the primary server to the runners to the water pourer, they were clearly miserable. It took a little away from the experience but the place is still worth the trip because the food is so good.
The food was very good, the waiter friendly without being too pushy. I loved my pisco sour, the wine was ok. As it was my first time there, I didn't know the ambiance is not good to enjoy an nice cosy evening, I need somewhere else for that. But for good Peruvian food, it's the right place.
