The BEST way to experience Tanoshii for two people is to order signature "fish and chips" appetizer and 3 Mike's special rolls. (Chefs choice)
Open every evening for dinner, Tanoshii is often referred to as serving the best sushi in Chicago for over 13 years, crafting fresh Japanese classics in its bright eatery. For delicious starters signature appetizers "fish and chips" and "rose" is highly recommended.
Tanoshii’s owner Mike Ham who's also a master sushi chef offers dishes renowned for their deft of fresh ingredients, and omakase dishes. Omakase in different words means chef choice. Chef uses the fresh fish for the day and uses their creativity to deliver you the best sushi experience.
Tanoshii has reviews in the Our Chicago Food Blog and the Chicago Reader. Its welcoming setting features a sushi bar and take-out ser
Tanoshii is an old school joint with innovative and delicious food. The ambiance is not remotely upscale but if you go the omakase route and put yourself in Sushi Mike’s capable hands, you will have a top-shelf culinary experience. The prices reflect the quality of the food, but the BYOB option helps keep the meal within a reasonable range. Sit at the bar for the best experience.
Go for the "leave it up to you"
Great food! Love that it is BYOB
The good online reviews raised our expectations but the experience was overall disappointing.
The go-to sushi like salmon was good but the fatty tuna was a bit fishy. The uni smelled like chlorine and not fresh. I ordered grilled mackerel and it showed up over cooked on one side and semi raw on the other, the raw broccoli and shredded carrots that surrounded the fish looked depressing and uninspired. All this took place in the back room which smelled a bit like bathroom disinfectant and looked pretty bare-boned. The last insult was the bill. We didn’t get that much and it’s byob so we were surprised by the high price.
I’d say for the neighborhood they should probably up their game quite a bit.
Wish there was some indication of Tanoshii being BYOB... awkward and unfortunate discovery on arrival. Waited 15 minutes after being seated for a server to find out that they only had 3 types of soda and water. They were out of whatever Japanese drink was also on the menu. The service itself was mediocre but luckily the food was truly outstanding.
The back room just felt kind of sad. The special (10 piece chefs daily special) was a little underwhelming for $20-$25 per course.
Wonderful appetizers but after that, just
Started with “fish and chips”. Just the right amount of heat. So fresh. We went with Mike’s Special for dinner. The roll made with mushroom with avocado and chive sauce was outstanding. Best sushi I’ve had in a long time. And the service was spot on.
Great food, definitely go with the Sushi Mike specials! Amazing creations
One of the best sushi places in town.
It would be great however to « refresh the bathroom and the dining room in the back.
I love Tanoshii - freshest and most creative sushi in the city. Always get the sushi Mike special, he crafts amazing sushi based on your likes/dislikes. Word of warning - never come on the weekend without a reservation. Weekends are very noisy with somewhat delayed service, but when the fish is this good (and of good value) it's hard to complain.
Best sushi !!!!!!
Best sushi anywhere!
I visit regularly and always start with “fish and chips” and then let Sushi Mike surprise me with the best maki ever. Not inexpensive but with its BYOB status the cost is totally fair for such great food.
Fresh and unique rolls in a calm atmosphere with great service. Have been many times, and will be returning soon. Highly recommended.
Good sushi with both traditional and creative adaptstions.
Tanoshii is hands down the best sushi I’ve ever had. My husband says it far exceeds the sushi he’s had in Japan. Tanoshii will be a must-have for all my subsequent stops in Chicago. I cannot say enough about this place!
It was extremely hot inside the restaurant. The table next to us arrived 10 min after us, got their apps first (same apps) The food was amazing though. Would go back to see how it goes the 2nd time.
We've been there many times - this was a birthday meal for my wife with my eldest son. Always a wonderful meal - Just let them feed you!
We always love Tanoshii's! It's our 'Go to' for the best sushi in Chicago!
Sushi Mike is amazing!!! We loved his creative rolls and enjoyed our entire meal! It was a great way to celebrate my birthday!
The food is always delicious. We always get their fish and chips appetizer. I highly recommend getting one of sushi mike’s rolls. However, I feel like I get the same one when I visit so next time I will probably order off the menu.
Leave off the menu and rely on chef decision.Really good and original dishes from the kitchen.
My daughter and I were lucky enough to be seated in front of Mike, the owner and primary sushi chef (there were two others). Mike's quite the character, chatting up the customers, drinking beer. Personally I thought it was great fun. We went with the Omakase, so Mike prepared a series of rolls for us of his own choosing. Some were fantastic, some were just very good but none were disappointing. Overall, we really enjoyed the food. You can probably do better at someplace much more expensive, but this was excellent food for the price. We'll definitely be back.
So glad we got the Sushi Mike’s Special! It was delicious! All the sushi was amazing. I’ll definitely be back!
This was our second time visiting with 10 people to celebrate my husbands birthday and we were very pleased. The rolls we’re plentiful and amazing. The service was excellent and the staff called multiple times to confirm what we were interested in ordering ahead so everything ran smoothly and the per person charge was set ahead of time which was amazing. They even accommodated Vegan eaters. Highly recommend!
Great, fresh delicious sushi. Go with the special and the sushi pizza is a must have!
we love this place and were surprised we were able to get in on a Saturday night. But then the crowd started after we got there. sushis always great.. the chix teriyake was fine
good food! excellent service! just lovely night
Sadly, the experience was not up to standards. The service was slow, they ran out of food (by 7:00) and cut some of our order in half, and some of the items they did serve were not fresh. We had eleven diners and had reserved the table months earlier. The bill was over $500, and we did not get our money’s worth. I would not go back.
Sushi Mike is the culinary extremest ! His own creations are far beyond anything I’ve come across, and I’m very picky about my Sushi
I almost hate to rave about this place because I don’t want it to get so popular that I can’t get in. This is by far the best sushi place in Chicago - and I have been to most of them. Sushi Mike is a genius and a master of his craft. Ordering off the menu is for amateurs. Go in and order the fish and chips and the Mike’s special. Let him make you something amazing. It is worth it every time. Andrew is by far the greatest staff person they have - although they are all fantastic. If you make a reservation ask to sit at Sushi Mike’s table to enjoy the best experience. You legitimately can’t go wrong with anything you order here. Just try not to praise it too loudly - we want to keep being able to get a seat. 🙂
Best sushi in the city !!!
Best sushi ever along with the best experience ever!!!!!
Had a great time, I was glad I made a reservation in advance. I wouldn't change a thing about the food we got! BYOB.
Always perfection! I always look forward to whatever combination Mike or crew will serve up next! Also get the Fish and chips! Plus- attentive service and byob!!
Sushi Mike was great.
I’ve lived two blocks away for the past 4 years. I wanted to try this place for a long time, and finally made it in. The nigiri is very good. The maki roll sizes are way too small. You will spend a ton of money and still be starving. The staff is generally very friendly.
Just get the sushi mike specials and be happy. it's a tad on the expensive side, but well worth it.
the 'fish and chip' appetizer is also a must. If you want to try a non-sushi entree, so the sushi mike softshell crab.
this place is literally the best.
Delicious as always, my favorite sushi restaurant. It is BYOB.
Hands down best sushi in Chicago- get the fish and chips and chefs special.
