His mother made the fresh pasta and bread. Tanino it seems was destined to master the art of fine Italian cuisine. He worked at his uncle's trattoria and studied at the Giarre Culinary School. It all comes together beautifully at Tanino's in Westwood. The Renaissance-style building was designed by Paul Williams and built in 1929.

We requested with the waiter to order our salad first, and then we’d put in the order for our entree. The waiter said that the chef only wanted to have the full order received at the same time. Shouldn’t it be what the customer wants?
The food (lasagna) was very bland - no flavor at all, and a very small, flat portion. SO not worth the cost no matter how nice the restaurant is. We had to fill-up on the bread. We also got far more table service from the busman than from the waiter.
I was told on the phone that they could “squeeze us in” for a reservation, but the place was not at all busy when we got there. I understand marketing tactics, but not plain misrepresentation.
Tanino is a nice neighborhood Italian restaurant, but in my previous experiences, the food was better. Tonight, however, it really wasn't great. More concerning was the fact that no one seemed to notice. Twice my orders were prepared wrong. My artichoke and arugula salad was drowned in dressing, but when I asked to have it done again, it came back identical. The issue seemed to be the communication between server and chef because my request for light sauce on the chicken scallopini resulted in "extra sauce." Yet no one bothered to check in and see how it tasted.
The food was average and not prepared as requested, the service was impersonal, and the ambience was depressing. All this for fine dining prices. Only one of the five of us left happy and he had the spaghetti bolognese. All in all, not worth the $$$.
The food was superb and every bit as good and genuine as some of the finest in Italy. My wife ordered the lasagna and it tasted like a cloud with just the right mixture of filling and seasoning, nothing like the usual firm and chewy version offered at "traditional American Italian" venues. The last time we tasted lasagna this well prepared was at a top notch restaurant in Milan.
My linguine bolognese exhibited Chef Tanino's brilliance in making a simple dish taste alive.
Our server was impeccable in his mixture of attentiveness and bon homie. Chef Tanino himself was equally engaging by coming out to speak with his guests and gauging their reaction to his offerings.
The wine list was well selected to pair with the food.
The overall experience was wonderful. Highly recommended.
Tanino is our favorite restaurant, because each time the experience is uplifting. We celebrated a friend's birthday on 12/6/17. The atmosphere is authentic Italian, very cozy and romantic. My sister and I had a superb scallop pasta with green pesto. The team serving the guests is outstanding. Very attentive, pleasant and accommodating. We much appreciated the beautiful, delicious and complimentary birthday dessert. Try Tanino and see and taste for yourself...
When I saw a sign for the Italian Cultural Institute, I joked with my husband that there must be a good Italian restaurant around. Tanino turned out to be everything you'd expect in an authentic Italian experience. The olive oil (100% Italian) was golden green and nutty (imported by Drago), the carciofi and baby arugula salad was generously sized with thin, moist shavings of parmesan. My husband's lamb chops entree was a perfect medium rare/medium, pink and tender with a lightly charred crust and a hint of sweet (I suppose from the white balsamic with which the caponata was prepared); and my penne with prosciutto and vodka was creamy and rich, perfectly al dente (and plenty of it), the minced prosciutto retained its flavor without overpowering the dish. We were first seated in the bustling main dining room but when we requested a quieter corner, they immediately accommodated our wish and let us to a table by the elegant bar where we had a view of the high ceiling with its understated, intricate wood carving and chandeliers. The waiter was attentive and the service was well paced. My husband had just attended the UCLA student body president reunion and the meal at Tanino completed a special weekend for us. Thank you.
Excellent food and ambience. NOT HAPPY about their policy of allowing only 2 samples of wine per table per request by guest. 4 of us, only 2 drinking and that was his response to that request? Never happened in any 4 star restaurant I have been to. Not good business when people are spending hundreds at a meal and the wine bottles are already open. Had to ask for the manager which prompted the waiter to bring another small taste on request. Not cool for such a fine restaurant.
Other then that, I will eat there again.
it had been quite awhile since I had gone to this restaurant, but it confirmed why I don't. Very limited menu and the portions and prices are way out of line for what is given (salads are truly expensive and not only can they not be split, but bare ok for one person....at $18 for arrugula and/or cut tomato's and very little else I feel it is awful!
The food was good. We reserved ahead, and the place was nearly empty, but somehow we were placed in a corner with an unpleasant view of the messy back corner near kitchen. I asked to sit elsewhere, and the waiter said nothing and didn't respond. Also, when the check came, I asked for it twice, but it had been presented to our guests in error, but the waiter didn't honor my requests for it, to the extent that the evening became uncomfortable and embarrassing instead of what we had planned.
The food is prepared well and I eat here often when going to the Geffen theater, however they have a new abbreviated menu and the high prices do not add value and I don't feel the price is worth what you get. I had the seafood linguine but they did it with Risotto for me. It was tasty but not enough seafood. The beet salad with goat cheese was very good and their bartender is great. I probably will go back for the convince , but I may hesitate because of the prices. Dinner for 2 with 2 drinks, sharing a salad, 2 espressos and the main dish with tip was $155.
When we arrived at the restaurant I noticed some empty tables of 4 and asked to be seated at one of them even tho we were a party of 2. I did this because there were other couples seated at tables for 4. I was told the empty tables were reserved for 4. We were then given a table for 2 in the bar side of the restaurant. Shortly afterward a party of 2 entered the restaurant and were given one of the tables for 4 that I had requested. I don't mind playing by the rules when everyone else is but this really bothered me. It's unfortunate that something like this can mar what would have been an otherwise delightful dining experience.
Absolutely divine Pasta dish, Vodka sauce with Prosciutto - lovely wine list, deliciousi Ceasar salad... my friend and I try to eat "light" so we shared both single items and it was absolutely enough for our supper meal! Servers were delightful, attentive, and caring.
Eating at Tanino's was one of the poorest business lunch experiences I have ever had. The food was way over priced and just mediocre. Even though the place was empty, the service was also mediocre. My guest and I split an appetizer, each had an entrée, coffee, and split dessert. The total bill with tip was $131.00. Good place to experience not much value for cost and hide during the lunch hour!
Tanino has been around for a while and happily maintains excellent food and service. The pasta is perfectly cooked and the sauces are flavorful but not too spicy . The wine list is interesting and nit budget busting. Try the pasta with proscuito or the veal marsala. Portions are generous and the staff is friendly. If you have elderly people in your party, please note that the restrooms are up a flight of stairs. We will definitely go back
